Like other colonies of the region, the Dutch first explored and founded trading posts in Connecticut. In 1633, Puritans from Massachusetts established the first permanent settlement.  From the outset, the industry established a means to prosperity in the colony. Production of brass buttons and munitions placed the colony in a position to later supply the Revolutionary Army. The colonial governor of Connecticut, Jonathan Trumbull, was the only governor who supported independence.

All three Connecticut delegates to the first Continental Congress continued their representation of the colony at the Second Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence.

In fact, Roger Sherman is the only person to have signed the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the United States Constitution. Eliphalet Dyer served the state of Connecticut as chief justice after the revolution.

Silas Deane served as a spy during the war and was for a time branded a traitor along with another Connecticut native, Benedict Arnold. He died penniless, but decades later in 1840, his granddaughter would petition Congress to review his records. His name would be cleared.

Connecticut’s small but full landscape holds countless revolutionary stories and adventures along New England’s National Scenic Trail. Through every season and every era, there’s something for every generation to enjoy!

Alternating in August

August is a month of transition, marked by a blend of summer’s lingering warmth and the impending arrival of fall. As families prepare for the back-to-school season, August provides a unique opportunity to celebrate a variety of national days that capture the essence of this transitional period. From quirky observances to meaningful commemorations, the month offers a diverse palette of events that encourage reflection, creativity, and enjoyment.

One of the standout features of August is its rich array of national days that highlight different aspects of life. For instance, National Watermelon Day on August 3 invites families to gather and enjoy this refreshing fruit, perfect for summer picnics. It serves as a reminder of the joys of summer, encouraging people to take a moment to appreciate the simple pleasures. Similarly, National Relaxation Day on August 15 prompts individuals to take a break from their busy schedules, emphasizing the importance of self-care and mental well-being.

As August unfolds, the month presents opportunities for community engagement and awareness. National Dog Day on August 26 celebrates our furry companions and raises awareness about the importance of adopting pets from shelters. This day not only honors the bond between humans and dogs but also encourages responsible pet ownership and the significance of animal welfare. Engaging in activities such as dog walks or adoption events can foster community spirit and compassion.

In addition to these celebrations, August is also a time for personal growth and creativity. National Craft Month encourages individuals to explore their artistic sides, whether through painting, knitting, or DIY projects. This observance highlights the therapeutic benefits of crafting, promoting mindfulness and relaxation. By dedicating time to creative pursuits, individuals can find joy in the process of making, which can be particularly fulfilling as summer draws to a close.

New Year’s Resolutions

Happy 2025

As the New Year approaches, many individuals embrace the tradition of setting resolutions—personal goals aimed at fostering self-improvement and positive change. This practice offers a fresh start, encouraging reflection on past behaviors and the commitment to adopt healthier habits or achieve specific objectives in the coming year. Common resolutions often focus on enhancing physical health, improving financial stability, and fostering personal development.

Among the most popular New Year’s resolutions are:

1. **Improving Physical Health**: Many people resolve to exercise regularly, adopt healthier eating habits, or quit smoking. These commitments are driven by the desire to enhance overall well-being and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

2. **Saving Money**: Financial goals, such as budgeting more effectively, reducing debt, or increasing savings, are common resolutions. Individuals aim to achieve greater financial security and prepare for future needs.

3. **Pursuing Personal Development**: This includes resolutions like learning new skills, reading more, or dedicating time to hobbies. Such goals are pursued to enrich one’s knowledge and enhance personal fulfillment.

While setting resolutions is a widespread practice, maintaining them can be challenging. Studies indicate that a significant number of individuals abandon their resolutions within the first few months of the year. To improve success rates, experts recommend setting realistic and specific goals, creating a structured plan, and seeking support from friends or communities. Utilizing tools like apps for tracking progress can also provide motivation and accountability, increasing the likelihood of sustaining these positive changes throughout the year.

2024 Year in Review

2024 has been an interesting year.  So here is a brief look back month by month.  While it’s not physically possible to list everything that happed this year, Jen’s Perspective continues to focus on love, laughter and love while making lasting memories.  This year I introduced Jen’s Perspective Magazine as well.  Each monthly digital magazine covers a variety of reasons to celebrate.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday to me! Today, I celebrate another year of growth, laughter, and memories made. I am grateful for the lessons learned, the challenges overcome, and the people who have been a part of my journey. Each year brings new opportunities, and I am excited to see what this one holds. I’ve worked hard to get here, and today is all about celebrating those accomplishments and the person I’m becoming.

After surving a hemoragic stroke in 2013, my life took a drastic turn from where I thought I would be today.  I lost my very good health, the ability to bear children, and my mobility as an independent person.  In spite of the odds I have not only survived, I taught myself how to build this blog, start 2 YouTube channels, and developed, write and produce a digital monthly magazine.  Having lost the ability to work even in a remote capacity had not impeded my aspirations for success.   I truly hope to garner the ability to continue forward with a little help from technology,  family, friends and a fantastic physical therapist.

I’m also looking forward to embracing whatever the future has in store. This year, I’m focusing on setting goals that truly matter to me and on making time for the things that bring me joy. Today, I’m taking a moment to just be present, appreciating the people who care about me, and enjoying the little moments that make life beautiful. Here’s to another fantastic year—filled with growth, happiness, and success!
