Tell a joke day August 16

Knock, knock?

Who’s there?

It’s August 16th, National Tell a Joke Day. Find a way to tickle your funny bone today.

Funny, joke, humor, laugh, cry
You either have to laugh or cry. I prefer to laugh. Crying gives me a headache.
Marjorie Pay Hinckley

While the origins of this funny holiday are unknown, feel free to laugh, giggle, chorale, and give those around you a smile. It’s safe to assume the creator of this holiday was endevoring to make the wield a happier place.

Different Jokes

A joke can be of different types. They can be verbal, as in the case of a one-liner, a whole story or in the form a question and answer, where the answer provides the humor. Jokes can also be physical such as in the case of a prank or a practical joke, where the act rather than the words provide the humor. Either way, the main purpose of a joke is to entertain by providing humor, even though jokes can sometimes be used to make serious commentary like in the case of satire.

Jokes have been an integral part of human history and many great minds have spent time and energy in trying to understand what makes jokes funny.

The day is known in the US as National Tell A Joke Day, and not to be confused with International Joke Day on July, 1.

Relaxation Day

Most of us need this on a pretty regular basis.  That’s what a vacation is for right?  But there is an official day for relaxation.  August 15th is the day, so here are some great ways to unwind.

As this is considered a national holiday, sorry school and work still on, its a great opportunity to look into ways to destress your day. By all means these methods work on normal days too.

Meditation

Meditation is a habitual process of quieting your mind and focusing on redirecting your thoughts.

Mefitationse can increase awareness of yourself and your surroundings. Many people think of it as a way to reduce stress and develop concentration. 15 minutes of deep meditation can energize you like a nap. People also use the practice to develop other beneficial habits and feelings, such as a positive mood and outlook, self-discipline, healthy sleep patterns and even increased pain tolerance.

I learned some really good technics when I took professional yoga. You do not have to use yoga or religion based meditation to get the benefits. Simple mindfulness meditation focus on your breathing and body. As you become more focused, you notice more about them. For instance you may notice your breathing a little fast, your heart rate is high or your blood pressure is elevated. Now that you’re focusing on it you can lower those symptoms. You’ll feel the state of your body. You’re muscles may say you twisted the wrong way, or over did it chasing the kids.

Visualations

Visualization or visualisation (see spelling differences) is any technique for creating imagesdiagrams, or animations to communicate a message. Visualization through visual imagery has been an effective way to communicate both abstract and concrete ideas since the dawn of humanity. Examples from history include cave paintingsEgyptian hieroglyphs, Greek geometry, and Leonardo da Vinci‘s revolutionary methods of technical drawing for engineering and scientific purposes.

Back to School

Starting Kindergarten, finishing Elementary, heading for Middle School, stepping onto a High School or University campus, it’s that time of year. As summer heads into fall we prepare for the school year ahead.

I know things have changed since I was in school, but the importance of an education was always encouraged in our home. Growing up we were encouraged to shoot for the stars and nothing we wanted to do, be it artist, doctor, nurse, lawyer, astronaught, musician, historian, yoga instructor, writer, or even the next Bill Gates, was always attainable. Now computers take a much more central role in education. Some learn the same curriculum exclusively online in programs like Florida’s K -12 program.

I also have to say if you are homeschooling or considering it, you have my hearty encouragement. My siblings and I started out first in a private school then public. When I was in 3rd grade that changed. My brother was having challenges. (This was before so many things like ADHD, dyslexia, and others became common knowledge.) My mother devoted herself to helping us both with anything we needed. Whether just some homework questions, or entire big concepts that we were not understanding in school. By the end of that year she was spending several hours teaching what they were doing at school. She decided that if she had to spend all that time doing the job, why was she sending us to school?

Check here for the rules, requirements and support in your state.

It was one of the best experiences ever! Not only did we learn at a higher level, we had a rounded curriculum that included, music, socializing with a group of 40 families who were also homeschooling, field trips and things not typically taught now. We went to zoos and museums, wrote book reports, we wrote and published our own newsletter. Birthday parties, libraries, science experiments, and a schedule that still saw us out the door when our friends arrived home thier schools.

When the word homeschooling is mentioned by some, they give a disapproving context. Claims of missing out on the social skills learned in other school settings, is one of the most frequent. I can 100% tell you in my experiences this was absolutely false.

Whatever the case may be the importance of education cannot be denied. Private, Public, Correspondence, Home, or other help prepare you stars to shine brightly in the academic world and later in life.

I’m admitting it, my mother was right! Education helped me become a success later in life. It also taught me to be tenacious while not giving up when life gets challenging. While unforeseen health issues have affected my ability to physically fly to the moon, I have not stopped reaching for the stars.

I hope everyone gets the same encouragement we did. As a help to parents and children everywhere, I’ve compiled 3q33 2esupply lists and provided links to Amazon. Skip the traffic, and the heat while your fingers do the walking. Get it all shipped directly to your door.

Outlander

If you’ve seen anything in this blog before you know I’m a book lover. Well I’m playing catch up. I passed over the Outlander series several years back upon encountering the books. I’m so sorry I did. The only reasons I can site are no one told me about them, and the cover art and titles didn’t catch my intrest. My sincerest apologies to the goddess author Diana Gabaldon. I saw some of the Outlander fever online, and went to look. I saw Season 1, episode 1 of the series from Starz and I’m hooked.

Time travel, Scottish Highlands, romance….what’s not to love. I saw the term knee porn used the other day and while I would normally never take this seriously, I have to agree that the character of Jamie Frasier in a kilt is a true sight to behold. I started falling in love with the depth of the characters, story line, and while Jamie is my favorite, Claire is very compelling as well.Where else can you find a WWII nurse transported back in time to 1743 in the Highlands of Scotland. There she meets a handsome, noble Scottish warrior. With no idea how or opportunity to return to her own time she weds him for protection in a world where women have little choice. Adventures ensue bringing encounters with the British soldiers of the time of great unrest in the country. I fell in love with the young highland warrior for his principles, strength of character, and okay I’ll admit it he does look good in a kilt. His character is tempered with vulnerabilities that he only shows to Claire and the reader/viewer.

I must admit I enjoyed a good binge watch to catch up to season 4. Now I have to read the books as well. The longest part of my week is waiting for the next episode. Sunday evenings will never be the same in my house. I am currently buying all of the books in print and awaiting the release of the next one too. I’ve read snipets shared online pertaining to various scenes and know from just the pieces I’ve read these will quickly make my favorite author list. Have you read these yet? Are you a fan of the show? I’ve seen the comments about the differences between the books and the show, it makes me want both experiences all the more. I’m now Outlander obsessed. I caught the fever and couldn’t be happier about it. I can happily recommend both the show and from what I’ve read so far the books as well.

Freedoms Ring

June 6th… In the dark days of WWII, with half of Europe overrun by The Axis Powers. America was attacked at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. We declared a unanimously supported declaration of war. Our forces were marshalled and staged to enter the European conflict as it now became essential to turn the tide that had overtaken so many nations.

Attack at Pearl Harbor Naval Fleet December 7, 1941

The unprovoked attack and devastation prompted thousands to enlist in the Armed forces of the day. “A day that will live in infamy”, it was termed. Our armed forces started preparing both men and equipment for the coming conflicts. Many unsung heroes from this day and who helped gather intelligence behind enemy lines are often forgotten to the pages of history. Thousands of our troops of all branch’s of service staged in some of the only places of freedom holding out in Great Britain.

Axis holdings 1943

After careful consideration by a team of cabinet advisors F. D. Roosevelt made the fateful decision to launch an offensive the size of which had not been seen at that time. Operation Overlord or D-day as it became known. Men, ships, tanks, amphibious landing craft, and a supply train of support had to both breech the outer defenses of the Atlantic Wall, envisioned by Hitler and Rommel. Our brave soldiers were joined by Troops from Britain, France, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Czechoslovakia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway and Poland, stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. 156,000 Allied troops made up the the landing by sea and air on five beachheads along the coast. Separate assault teams made perilous landings by both parachute and gliders in the dark of night to sabotage, and capture vital supply lines and bridges before the main landings on the beaches.

Along with the brave men who faced the enemy forces on those beaches and as they made their way inland across Europe there were numerous heroes obscured by the remembrances of history. Countless men and women worked behind the lines to make the ultimate victory possible. As we remember those who gave their last measure of devotion, let us not forget those who worked with local resistance groups to do everything from coded radio broadcasts, destroying supplies, fighting and harboring both wounded soldiers and those who also hid people like Anne Frank.

On June 6th we celebrate the freedoms so hard won in battles in this and other conflicts. Their bravery and sacrifices are why so many do not speak only one language. In todays world we hear a lot if talk about Diversity.  These souls took a stand so we can celebrate our differences. As we look at the world today it is important to remember the lessons taught by the experiences of history. The rights and freedoms we so often take advantage of have been hard won by the sacrifices of those who have stood up for them both at home and abroad. While there are very few WWII Veteran’s still out there they have earned the respect and deference afforded them. They fought so we could live in freedom and peace.

Today we honor our heroes and I also give thanks as we celebrate a long list of holidays devoted to these ideals that a 3 day weekend for things like Memorial Day or 4th of July are not just about our backyard BBQ. These lessons need to be passed on to future generations as well. Places like Korea, Vietnam, Afganastan, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, and a long list of others (that I cannot remember at the moment), means we are still searching for fairness and peace. One day I hope Diplomacy will be enough to achieve this but until that day arrives we must be ready and willing to maintain these freedoms we enjoy. Are you wiling to stand up for these freedoms?
