NATIONAL WANNA GET AWAY DAY

With the summer travel season upon us, National Wanna Get Away Day celebrates our freedom to get away on June 18th.

Planning memorable trips and get-aways brings out the adventurer in all of us! These get-aways take us to family we long to see and historic places. We seek the sun, sand, big cities and the countryside, too. It is a national pastime with deep roots – one that connects all of us to the people and places most important in our lives. National Wanna Get Away Day is the perfect day for celebrating, dreaming, and planning all the adventures you will take this year and every year after!

As a resident of Florida we love our beautiful beaches, nightlife and picturesque towns.  Some of the best hidden treasures in Florida are found outside of the big touristy places like Orlando, Miami, and St Augustine.  Places like Destin, Pensacola, Sea Side, and even Gulf Shores, Alabama offer great views, premium culture and a relaxing stay that truly feel like an Oasis to get away from it all. I grew up just across from Panama City Beach that still offers a small town vibe.

NATIONAL WANNA GET AWAY DAY HISTORY

In 2021, Southwest Airlines® founded National Wanna Get Away to commemorate the airline’s 50th Anniversary. At Southwest, they have spent half a century making everything seem a little bit closer and giving people the freedom to get away, wherever and whenever. In 1996, Southwest coined the phrase “Wanna Get Away®” to highlight the Company’s expansion. The phrase also creates humorous moments relevant to its Customers within its marketing. As “Wanna Get Away” has become an iconic and recognized expression for the brand, Southwest took it a step further to celebrate its 50th Anniversary by announcing this new annual day.

WORLD BICYCLE DAY

On June 3, World Bicycle Day targets individuals as a way to promote a healthy lifestyle, especially for those with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Organizers also target local governments to encourage them to improve road safety and integrate bicycling into transportation infrastructure planning and design.

Bicycles and the routes their riders are on the increase. They’re seen as a healthier, inexpensive and convenient mode of transportation, and they’re sharing the road with more traditional urban transit systems. City planners looking to alleviate the increased flow of automobile traffic encourage bicycles usage. In some cities, public transportation systems can’t handle the demand, so cities are beginning to accommodate bikes with improvements such as “bicycle-only lanes” and other improvements.

Did you know that according to transportation researchers, $50 billion is spent worldwide on bicycles each year – and that number is growing? On top of that, the U.S. cycling market is a $5.9 billion industry.  In many cities, dockless bicycle systems are fueling the popularity of bicycling. Dockless systems allow users to locate a bicycle nearby and unlock it electronically. Did you know that the fastest-growing bicycle type in the market right now is electric?

WORLD BICYCLE DAY HISTORY

The first World Bicycle Day was observed in 2019. In April 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 3 as International World Bicycle Day.

International Tea Day

Every year on May 21st, International Tea Day promotes ways to sustain the production and consumption of tea. It’s also a day to spread awareness of the importance of tea in fighting hunger and poverty.

You might be surprised to know that tea (not coffee) is the preferred beverage of choice for millions of people in the world. The global per capita consumption of tea is 35.2 liters. Every second, people consume 25,000 cups of tea. This equals 2.16 billion cups of tea per day.

As the world population increases, so will the number of tea drinkers. Tea is especially popular in India and China. These two countries account for 37% of the world’s total population. Tea has a rich history in the world. According to legend, Emperor Shen Hung discovered tea when leaves from a tree blew into his pot of boiling water. This event happened in ancient China nearly 5,000 years ago. People in China and around the world have been drinking tea ever since.

Besides drinking it for taste, many tea drinkers enjoy the many health benefits of tea. These benefits include:

  • Contains antioxidants
  • Reduces one’s risk of heart attack and stroke
  • Aids with weight loss
  • Protects the bones
  • Prevents tooth loss
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Helps battle cancer
  • Soothes the digestive system
  • Helps the body to feel more relaxed

According to one particular study, habitual tea drinkers were less likely to die prematurely. These people drank tea at least 3 times a week. Green tea seems to have more health benefits than black tea.

INTERNATIONAL TEA DAY HISTORY

Ever since 2005, tea-producing countries banded together to celebrate an International Tea Day. These countries included Sri Lanka, Nepal, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, and Uganda. In 2019, the Intergovernmental Group on Tea proposed to celebrate International Tea Day on May 21st. The UN approved the proposal on December 21, 2019. The first official UN-sanctioned International Tea Day was held on May 21st, 2020.

WORLD BAKING DAY

Every third Sunday in May, World Baking Day inspires people to bake for their loved ones, friends, and neighbors. These bakers are also encouraged to give their baked goods away as a token of gratitude and appreciation.

People have been baking for thousands of years. In fact, the world’s oldest oven is over 6,500 years old! Bread baking goes all the way back to 600 BC in Ancient Greece. The Egyptians were the first to use yeast when baking bread. Besides bread, cakes were also a popular food to bake. The word “cake” dates back to the 13th century. The earliest cakes were more bread-like. Bakers added sugar or honey to add sweetness.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, baking was transformed by globalization. There was an abundance of syrups, spices, and currants, which made baked goods taste even more delicious. Bready dough with butter, cream, and raisins were especially popular. By the late 17th century, sugar was less expensive. As a result, people began making mince pies with sugar and spices. Eventually, other ingredients like eggs, flour, and baking powder were used more and more.

Today baked goods are popular all over the world. Some favorites include apple pie, black forest cake, baklava, cannoli, Yorkshire pudding, rye bread, brownies, and pretzels.

WORLD BAKING DAY HISTORY

Since 2012, World Baking Day has been observed on the third Sunday in May. The original intent of the day was to make and give away a homemade cake. The day has since evolved into baking and giving away all kinds of baked goods. Our team is still researching who came up with this special food day.

HOW TO OBSERVE #WorldBakingDay

The best way to observe this day is to bake some goodies for a friend, neighbor or loved one. They will be surprised and delighted to receive such a wonderful and delicious gift. This day is also a great day to teach your kids to bake. Go ahead and try to bake something you’ve never made before. Or host a cake decorating contest. No matter what you choose to bake, be sure to share your goodies with others. Take a photo of your creation and post it on social media with #WorldBakingDay.
