Melodies of May

As May unfolds, the world awakens to a symphony of renewal, earning its poetic title “Melodies of May.” The month bursts forth with vibrant life, where the grass becomes so lush and green that you could milk the cows three times a day. This imagery captures the abundant fertility of the season, as pastures thicken under warming sun and gentle rains. Fields transform into emerald carpets, supporting thriving livestock and promising bountiful harvests. Nature’s rhythm sets the tone for May’s melodies—birds singing at dawn, breezes rustling new leaves, and the hum of insects in blooming meadows—inviting all to pause and celebrate the earth’s generous rebirth.

May Day, on the first of the month, anchors these celebrations with ancient roots in European folklore. Communities gather to “bring in the May,” adorning homes with hawthorn blossoms, wildflowers, and fresh greenery. This tradition symbolizes the triumph of summer over winter, blending pagan rites of fertility with later Christian influences. Revelers crown a May Queen, often accompanied by a figure like Jack in the Green, while processions wind through villages. The air fills with laughter and song, turning the day into a living melody of joy and communal harmony.

Central to May’s festivities are the iconic maypoles, tall wooden poles erected as symbols of spring’s vitality. Dancers weave colorful ribbons around them in intricate patterns, their movements creating a visual and rhythmic dance that echoes the month’s lively spirit. These poles, often topped with wreaths or flowers, stand as focal points for village fairs. In many European countries, maypole dances occur on May Day itself, though some regions extend the merriment into mid-summer. The tradition fosters connection, as participants circle together in synchronized steps set to folk tunes.

In 1644, however, England’s Puritan authorities banned maypoles, denouncing them as “heathenish vanity” tied to superstition and excess. This prohibition reflected broader efforts to suppress what were seen as frivolous or idolatrous customs during the Commonwealth period. Yet the spirit of May proved resilient. People continued secret or subdued observances, clinging to the joy of the season despite restrictions. The ban highlighted tensions between folk traditions and religious reform, yet it could not silence the melodies that had long defined the month.

The restoration of the monarchy brought a triumphant revival. When Charles II returned to England in 1660, jubilant crowds in London erected maypoles at nearly every crossroads to mark the occasion. One particularly grand example soared to about 123 feet (or over 130 feet in some accounts), towering as a beacon of celebration and defiance against prior suppressions. These poles became emblems of renewed freedom and festivity, their heights matching the soaring hopes of the era. Music and dance flowed freely once more, weaving political renewal into the timeless fabric of May’s songs.

Even after its eventual removal, that towering London maypole found an unexpected second life in science. It was repurposed to support a telescope used by none other than Isaac Newton, linking rustic festival traditions with groundbreaking astronomical inquiry. This quirky transition from revelry to research underscores May’s multifaceted legacy—bridging earthy pleasures with intellectual pursuits. The pole’s journey reminds us that melodies of joy can inspire discovery, turning symbols of spring into tools for exploring the cosmos.

NATIONAL HOBBY MONTH

January is National Hobby Month, the perfect time of year to pick up a new hobby, or get back into an old one that you haven’t thought about in a while! The great thing about having a hobby is that it can take your mind off the pressure of work or other daily stresses. Sit down and think about what you really love to do. What are you passionate about in life? What sparks your interest the most? What are you curious about? What are your goals? Finding a good hobby and giving yourself time to take part in it on a daily or weekly basis is sure to make you happier, and maybe even healthier.

“It can be coins or sports or politics or horses or music or faith… the saddest people I’ve ever met in life are the ones who don’t care deeply about anything at all. Passion and satisfaction go hand in hand, and without them, any happiness is only temporary, because there’s nothing to make it last.” -Nicholas Sparks, Dear John

HOW TO OBSERVE

Use #NationalHobbyMonth to post on social media. Talk about a new hobby you’ve picked up or better yet, post a photo or video of you doing it to get others inspired to do the same! If you’re having trouble thinking of a hobby to get into, we’ve put together a list of some healthy activities for you to consider.

  • Get to the gym 5 days a week. Running on a treadmill, lifting weights, or taking workout classes are great hobbies to take up because they are sure to improve your quality of life, both physically and mentally.
  • Try gardening. It stimulates your mind, involves a little physical activity, and it’s rewarding. Research shows gardening can even help improve your mood almost instantly, can lower your risk of dementia, and relieves stress.
  • Start cooking at home more often. If you can learn to cook wholesome, nutritious meals for yourself and your family, you’ll save money and have a healthier lifestyle. Cooking can also be therapeutic in itself, and will allow you some alone time to create beautiful dishes!
  • Take up yoga. No matter your age, gender, or level of physical fitness, yoga will increase your strength and flexibility. It also gives people clarity, peace of mind, and is overall a big stress reliever for anybody.
  • If you have the time, money, and are willing to add a responsibility to your life… Buy a pet! Animals have been proven to improve mental health for many people. Research shows owning and bonding with a pet decreases the risk of depression, anxiety, and stress.
  • Volunteer. Being a part of your community and lending a hand without getting paid in return has shown to incredibly improve mental health and give people a sense of fulfillment.
  • Give reading and/or writing a try. Picking up a good book, journaling, and blogging are all great ways to help clear your mind. They can temporarily take you to another place or time, allow you to express your thoughts freely, and even improve your vocabulary.
  • Finally… Travel! Take a week or two off work and go experience another culture. Whether you go on a tropical vacation and spend days on the beach, or head to the cold snowy mountains to hit the slopes, traveling helps to shift your perspective, and can even help you discover yourself.

…And if you’re really lucky, you can find what you love to do and turn it into your career. You know what they say. If you make your hobby your job, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.

NATIONAL APP DAY

National App Day on December 11th encourages us to explore all the possibilities apps afford us.

The word “App” was listed as the word of the year in 2010 by the American Dialect Society.

Short for Software Application, apps quickly appeared as our mobile cellular phones incorporated smart technologies. As the power of our phones increased with processing chips, internet connectivity, and touchscreens, so did the apps that became available.

Since that time, apps continue changing how we work, live, and play. They offer opportunities, too, by creating thousands of new companies, millions of new jobs, and billions of dollars in revenue.

Apps accelerated in growth with the advent of Apple’s iPhone in 2007. In 2008 Apple introduced OS 2.0, which included approximately 500 apps and allowed third-party app generation. Today there are over 3 million apps on both the Apple and Android platforms and thousands more introduced daily.

From social networking to productivity, apps function in every part of our lifestyle. They control the lights in our house and keep our playlists at our fingertips. We stay in tune with the world around us through news apps customized to our interests and stay connected to the people who mean the most to us.

NATIONAL APP DAY HISTORY

Platinum Edge Media and its founder CJ Thompson created National App Day in 2017 to celebrate the importance of apps as they change our collective culture by organically promoting creativity and innovation.

My goto Apps that I use practically everyday include:

Prism – Money and Bill Pay. We use this App for almost all our bill paying. It not only keeps track of when it’s due, but gives me balances, and real time payments directly from the App. Actively helps me from being a victim of identity theft.

Digical – All calendar.  Appointments, To Do, reminders,  and blog reminders.

Medisafe – Keeps my prescription medications on track with scheduling and reminders. Also a very conventional way to have a current medicine list on your phone in case of emergency, hospital stay, Dr visits and more.

My Sugar – As a diabetic this app links to my meter and gives both short and long term readings on my blood sugar.  Helps me stay informed and make good diet decisions as well.

Lose It! – Calorie counter, dieting App. Keep track of what you eat, calories, carbs, food diary, and fitness logs.   I was amazed at how much more contentious just keeping the food diary helped me choose healthy eating and loose weight.

News Break – News source that gives local, State, National, and worldwide news.

Google Weather – Accurate conditions

YoWindow – the weather both now and forcasts

WordPress – If you are reading this post, it’s where I blog.  Easy to use visual and html, let’s me build my site.

Canva – create stunning social media posts, pins, and graphics.

Calligraphy – Add text to photos, and create graphics like you see on my site.

Polaris Office – Write, spreadsheet, newsletters,  slides, slideshows, word and text documents.

Googl Keep – My husband swears by this App.  He keeps everything from grocery lists and To do lists to passwords and reminder notes.

Samsung Notes – I like this one as my Notes can even be written with stylus.  Keeps notes, lists, observations, and reminders at my fingertips.

Walmart – Like most of we do our shopping for groceries and household often.  Shop in store or online, checkout on your mobile device.  Have it delivered or shipped straight to your door.  Saves me so much time and money.

Shipt – Publix, Winn Dixie, Target, Walgreens, CVS, Petsmart, Office Depot Office Max and even GNC.  Groceries or even better imagine not having to trudge through a store.  Get it delivered.

Instacart – Get everything I need for dinner in 2 hours or less.  Gives me delivery from stores like Aldi’s in my neighborhood.

Amazon Shopping – Amozon is so well known now.  My Prime membership gives me perks, savings and access to products simply not sold locally.

Ibotta – Cash back at the grocery store!  We all have to eat.  So why not get cash back on what’s you’re already buying.  Seriously I make enough cash back to get Thanksgiving dinner free!  This year it’s Christmas dinner too.

Fetch brings you a fun and exciting way to shop and save, turning all your receipts into rewards in a snap. Earn points by scanning receipts, then choose from hundreds of your favorite rewards. Rakuten – Cash back on the most popular shopping sites online.  Great deals from the app or browser extension.   We save on things like Daytimer, Amazon, Chewy, and do many more.

Temu – While similar to Wish the shipping deals have made this my new favorite this holiday season.  Gifts for lots and something for myself too.

Restaurants and food delivery – Uber Eats, Door Dash, Postmates, Grubhub, we learned about during the Covid pandemic.   Now delivery from your favorite restaurants is at your fingertips.  We love getting McDonald’s, Burger King, Popeyes, Panda Express, Captain D’s,  Chili’s, Texas Roadhouse, Taco Bell, Applebee’s, Cheddar’s, Greek, Mexican, American, you name it they can probably deliver it.

Prime Video – Streaming is so much better than high priced cable bills. Live Football, original series and movies all directly to your smart tv. What to see a new movie, simply purchase and stream. Pausing when you need a snack, or a break is ultra convenient.

Kindle – Amazon’s answer for Ebooks. I love my Kindle! Not only is it available on Amazon devices but you can seamlessly change from phone, tablet, Kindle, or even a desktop computer. Now I can take my book literally anywhere my phone goes. As a bibliophile, you’ll never find me without a great read.

Amazon Music – Load your favorite playlists, and let the music play. Prime members enjoy lots of tunes. No need for a separate device. I just load my phone widget and press play. Bluetooth connection let’s me play it on the surround sound system, my personal Bluetooth speaker, ear buds, air pods or headphones.

Love Nikki – We all need to unwind. This dress up game is like having both a fantasy adventure and a never-ending closet. Put your fashion sense to the test to save Mirland.
