NATIONAL APP DAY

National App Day on December 11th encourages us to explore all the possibilities apps afford us.

The word “App” was listed as the word of the year in 2010 by the American Dialect Society.

Short for Software Application, apps quickly appeared as our mobile cellular phones incorporated smart technologies. As the power of our phones increased with processing chips, internet connectivity, and touchscreens, so did the apps that became available.

Since that time, apps continue changing how we work, live, and play. They offer opportunities, too, by creating thousands of new companies, millions of new jobs, and billions of dollars in revenue.

Apps accelerated in growth with the advent of Apple’s iPhone in 2007. In 2008 Apple introduced OS 2.0, which included approximately 500 apps and allowed third-party app generation. Today there are over 3 million apps on both the Apple and Android platforms and thousands more introduced daily.

From social networking to productivity, apps function in every part of our lifestyle. They control the lights in our house and keep our playlists at our fingertips. We stay in tune with the world around us through news apps customized to our interests and stay connected to the people who mean the most to us.

NATIONAL APP DAY HISTORY

Platinum Edge Media and its founder CJ Thompson created National App Day in 2017 to celebrate the importance of apps as they change our collective culture by organically promoting creativity and innovation.

My goto Apps that I use practically everyday include:

Prism – Money and Bill Pay. We use this App for almost all our bill paying. It not only keeps track of when it’s due, but gives me balances, and real time payments directly from the App. Actively helps me from being a victim of identity theft.

Digical – All calendar.  Appointments, To Do, reminders,  and blog reminders.

Medisafe – Keeps my prescription medications on track with scheduling and reminders. Also a very conventional way to have a current medicine list on your phone in case of emergency, hospital stay, Dr visits and more.

My Sugar – As a diabetic this app links to my meter and gives both short and long term readings on my blood sugar.  Helps me stay informed and make good diet decisions as well.

Lose It! – Calorie counter, dieting App. Keep track of what you eat, calories, carbs, food diary, and fitness logs.   I was amazed at how much more contentious just keeping the food diary helped me choose healthy eating and loose weight.

News Break – News source that gives local, State, National, and worldwide news.

Google Weather – Accurate conditions

YoWindow – the weather both now and forcasts

WordPress – If you are reading this post, it’s where I blog.  Easy to use visual and html, let’s me build my site.

Canva – create stunning social media posts, pins, and graphics.

Calligraphy – Add text to photos, and create graphics like you see on my site.

Polaris Office – Write, spreadsheet, newsletters,  slides, slideshows, word and text documents.

My Drive – Cloud storage.  Store pictures, documents, receipts, and backup info.  I regularly keep digital copies in cloud storage.  If you’ve ever lost or broken a device or need to access legal documents cloud storage gives me access no matter what device I’m using.

Googl Keep – My husband swears by this App.  He keeps everything from grocery lists and To do lists to passwords and reminder notes.

Samsung Notes – I like this one as my Notes can even be written with stylus.  Keeps notes, lists, observations, and reminders at my fingertips.

Walmart – Like most of we do our shopping for groceries and household often.  Shop in store or online, checkout on your mobile device.  Have it delivered or shipped straight to your door.  Saves me so much time and money.

Shipt – Publix, Winn Dixie, Target, Walgreens, CVS, Petsmart, Office Depot Office Max and even GNC.  Groceries or even better imagine not having to trudge through a store.  Get it delivered.

Instacart – Get everything I need for dinner in 2 hours or less.  Gives me delivery from stores like Aldi’s in my neighborhood.

Amazon Shopping – Amozon is so well known now.  My Prime membership gives me perks, savings and access to products simply not sold locally.

Ibotta – Cash back at the grocery store!  We all have to eat.  So why not get cash back on what’s you’re already buying.  Seriously I make enough cash back to get Thanksgiving dinner free!  This year it’s Christmas dinner too.

Fetch – Shop & Save Money! Scan Receipts to Earn Gift Cards. Your Shopping & Saving Superpower! Fetch brings you a fun and exciting way to shop and save, turning all your receipts into rewards in a snap. Earn points by scanning receipts, then choose from hundreds of your favorite rewards. Shop personalized offers, play free point games daily and connect with your friends.

Rakuten – Cash back on the most popular shopping sites online.  Great deals from the app or browser extension.   We save on things like Daytimer, Amazon, Chewy, and do many more.

Temu – While similar to Wish the shipping deals have made this my new favorite this holiday season.  Gifts for lots and something for myself too.

Restaurants and food delivery – Uber Eats, Door Dash, Postmates, Grubhub, we learned about during the Covid pandemic.   Now delivery from your favorite restaurants is at your fingertips.  We love getting McDonald’s, Burger King, Popeyes, Panda Express, Captain D’s,  Chili’s, Texas Roadhouse, Taco Bell, Applebee’s, Cheddar’s, Greek, Mexican, American, you name it they can probably deliver it.

Prime Video – Streaming is so much better than high priced cable bills. Live Football, original series and movies all directly to your smart tv. What to see a new movie, simply purchase and stream. Pausing when you need a snack, or a break is ultra convenient.

Kindle – Amazon’s answer for Ebooks. I love my Kindle! Not only is it available on Amazon devices but you can seamlessly change from phone, tablet, Kindle, or even a desktop computer. Now I can take my book literally anywhere my phone goes. As a bibliophile, you’ll never find me without a great read.

Amazon Music – Load your favorite playlists, and let the music play. Prime members enjoy lots of tunes. No need for a separate device. I just load my phone widget and press play. Bluetooth connection let’s me play it on the surround sound system, my personal Bluetooth speaker, ear buds, air pods or headphones.

Love Nikki – We all need to unwind. This dress up game is like having both a fantasy adventure and a never-ending closet. Put your fashion sense to the test to save Mirland.

Facebook – Who hasn’t heard of this one by now? This allows family and friends to communicate, check up, check in, and share easily. Pictures of the grand babies, how school is going, or just video chat with Mom. Remember to check you feed!

Pintrest – My #1 bookmarking spot. Recipes, lists, books, movies, celebrities, crafts, shopping, new products, home decor, gardening, games, Journaling, you name I’ll bet there’s a pin. Pin your likes to your own boards. Keep ideas, thoughts, planning, and even wishlists and vision boards.

Nextdoor – Do you know what’s going on in your neighborhood? Giveaways, Yard sales, stolen packages…. Communicate with each other. Chances are even if your just curios you’ll find something near you.

NATIONAL TECHIES DAY

Amazon Prime Days

National Techies Day on October 3rd encourages students to consider a career in technology.  With so many opportunities in the growing technology field, students seeking a career in technology will find promising choices anywhere they look.

In 2012, Engine Advocacy commissioned a report by the Bay Area Council Economic Institute in California. According to the report, for every high-tech job, four more jobs are created. That’s a lot of economic boost created by one industry.

By 2030, the technology sector will continue to grow while other job sectors may decline. While the jobs future changes, one thing remains steady – technology. Healthcare technologies will continue growing by nearly 48 percent. While research ramps up, surgeons and medicine take advanced technologies to a whole new level. With it, they need software specialists trained to maintain the equipment and train the medical personnel.

Beyond medical technology, manufacturing advances technology every day. When considering the future of the automotive world alone, specialized technology keeps up the demand for qualified professionals.

Software development grows every day. However, if we examine technology’s impact on manufacturing, security, and global environmental solutions, we can’t ignore our future needs. The students in the classroom will be the skilled, trained technology-savvy employees of tomorrow. We need them to be.

Take note that National Techies Day falls during National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Techies ensure our devices are protected and secured. They develop the software and help us maintain our computers, smart devices, and more. If you don’t protect your computers – find a techie today! https://www.google.com/amp/s/happydays365.org/national-techies-day/national-techies-day-october/amp/

NATIONAL TECHIES DAY HISTORY

With a growing need for employees with advanced technical skills in America, Techies.com and CNT Networks launched National Techies Day. In 1999, nearly 60% of new jobs were expected to require advanced technical skills that Americans didn’t have. The tech companies and the day encourage kids to embrace computer science and even the monikers sometimes attached to contemporary technology.

Jumbo Sized July 2025

The seventh month of the Gregorian year is named in honor of Julius Caesar. In 63 B.C. Caesar had been elected Pontifex Maximus. During this time, the calendar was 355 days long. Gradually, through mishandling and corruption, pontiffs allowed the calendar to lengthen. To please one priest and anger another, January slipped into fall shortening it. While Caesar didn’t place the month of Quintilis (meaning fifth) in the strangely seventh place, he did decide to change from a lunisolar to a solar calendar.

A year after Caesar completed the calendar, he was assassinated on the Ides of March. In his honor, the Roman Senate named the seventh month July, the month of Caesar’s birth.

Quintilis

July was originally named Quintilis after Marcus Aurelius Claudius Quintillus, a Roman Emperor who died in 270 B.C.  Before the Roman calendar, there were only ten months, and Quintilis was the fifth month. When the Romans added new months, Quintilis and other months were adjusted. The new solar year would consist of 365 days, adding 10 to the total. The extra days were distributed among the months with 29 days.

Thе new calendar went іntо effect оn the first dау оf Jаnuаrу 709 A.U.C. (ab urbе condita—”from the fоundіng оf thе сіtу [Rоmе]”) Jаnuаrу 1, 45 B.C. and put аn end tо thе arbitrary and іnассurаtе nаturе оf thе еаrlу Roman ѕуѕtеm. Thе Julіаn саlеndаr bесаmе thе predominant саlеndаr thrоughоut Europe for thе nеxt 1600 уеаrѕ untіl Pоре Gregory mаdе furthеr rеfоrmѕ іn 1582.

Certain соuntrіеѕ аnd institutions іn fасt аdhеrеd to this ancient ѕуѕtеm untіl wеll іntо thе twеntіеth сеnturу. Thе Julіаn саlеndаr wаѕ uѕеd іn Russia untіl 1917 and іn Chіnа untіl 1949. To this day the Eastern Orthodox сhurсh adheres tо Cаеѕаr’ѕ саlеndаr.

Joyous June

June marks the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, bringing longer days and warmer temperatures. This month is often associated with the end of the school year and the beginning of vacations, making it a popular time for travel and outdoor activities. Many regions experience significant cultural and sporting events, such as music festivals and sports tournaments. As nature thrives, gardens and landscapes become lush, providing an ideal backdrop for picnics, barbecues, and other leisure activities.

June is the month of the summer sun, flowers, and no school. That is if you live in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s winter in June. Thе month of June hаѕ 30 dауѕ though on the pre-Caesar Roman calendar, the month only had 29 days, Whеn thе winter dауѕ wеrе gіvеn twо mоnthѕ аnd mоrе days were аddеd to thе саlеndаr, Junе was gіvеn an аddіtіоnаl day.

June is the 6th month of the year. But it wasn’t always. In 46 BC, Julius Caesar modified the Roman Calendar by dividing the year into twelve months. By adding two months, the Julian calendar moved June from the 4th month to its current position. June also derives its name from the goddess Juno, Jupiter’s wife. Frоm Juno to Junе, the naming ѕtrаtеgу seems obvious. However, thеrе are multiple bеlіеfѕ rеgаrdіng thе nаmіng оf Junе. Aссоrdіng to few experts, thе nаmе was dеrіvеd frоm thе wоrd Iunіоrѕ; meaning thе youth.

Weather & Seasons

The longest day of the year is in June. The Summer Solstice ushers in astrological summer on June 20th or 21st. June 1st to August 31st is considered meteorological summer. The weather is mild across most of the Northern Hemisphere. June’s full moon is called the strawberry moon.

NATIONAL TELL A FAIRY TALE DAY

On February 26, have a happily ever after kind of day. It’s National Tell A Fairy Tale Day!

What were once oral histories, myths, and legends retold around the fire or by traveling storytellers, have been written down and become known the world over as fairy tales.

The origins of most fairy tales were unseemly and would not be approved or rated as appropriate for children by the Association of Fairy Tales by today’s standards. Most were told as a way to make children behave, teach a lesson or to pass the time much like ghost stories around a campfire today.

Fairy Tales: A Beautiful Collection of Favorite Fairy Tales Hardcover

Fairy Tales: A Beautiful Collection of Favorite Fairy Tales

Many of the stories have some basis in truth. For example, some believe the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is inspired by the real life of Margarete von Waldeck, the daughter of the 16th century Count of Waldeck. The area of Germany where the family lived was known for mining. Some of the tunnels were so tight they had to use children – or small people such as dwarfs – to work the mines.

Margarete’s beauty is well documented, and she had a stepmother who sent her away. She fell in love with a prince but mysteriously died before she could have her happily ever after.
As the stories evolved, they took on a more magical quality with fictional characters such as fairies, giants, mermaids and gnomes, and sometimes gruesome story plots.
Toes cut off to fit into a slipper, a wooden boy killing his cricket or instead of kissing that frog prince his head must be cut off, but those are the unrated versions.

The brothers Grimm collected and published some of the more well-known tales we are familiar with today. Jakob and his brother Wilhelm together set out on a quest to preserve these tales at a time in history when a tradition of oral storytelling was fading.

In 1812, they published their first volume of stories titled Household Tales.  Their stories had a darker quality and were clearly meant for an adult audience.

Rumpelstiltskin is one of the tales they collected. There were several versions, and the little man went by many names in different parts of Europe. From Trit-a-trot in Ireland to Whuppity Stoorie in Scotland, Rumplestiltskin was one difficult man to identify.

While some storytellers have a long and sometimes ancient history such as Aesop (The Fox and the Goose, The Ant and the Grasshopper), others are more recent like the Grimm brothers.

Hans Christian Andersen, first published in 1829, brought to us written versions of the Princess and the Pea, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid and many more. Where Grimm’s tales could take on a darker cast and unmistakably written with adults in mind, Andersen’s stories are sweet and warm.

HOW TO OBSERVE
How to Tell a Great Story:

Engage your audience. Children like to participate. Have them quack every time the Ugly Duckling is mentioned, or make the motions of climbing Jack’s beanstalk.

Use repetition. Repeated stanzas, syllables or movements will keep the kids engaged. It not only helps them to remember the story but sets them up for the next round of the repeated phrase or stanza.

Give your characters a voice. Nobody likes a monotone storyteller. Buehler, Buehler, Buehler. No, not even children like the monotone. Varying your voice for each character and inflecting excitement, sadness and disappointment will create drama and stimulate the imaginations of the little minds listening to you.

Ask questions as you go. It’s an excellent way to keep your story flowing and to gauge the children’s listening skills.

Find out if someone has a story of their own. You might be in the presence of a great storyteller!

Share your favorite fairy tale with friends and family.  Try relating them from memory as this has long been a tradition.  Visit a library or local bookstore for story time.
