November 11 Vetrans Day

After listening to one of those man on the street interviews/quizzes it is ridiculously important that we use traditions such as these not only to remember, but teach as well. Military history is so important, as is any history so we avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. It helps us understand some of the decisions that effect our troops even today.

The Political and World Affairs we see today can be influenced greatly by our knowledge of what came before. Much of the misinformation circulating today is from the absence of these important facts.

Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans, that is, persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces (and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable)[1][2]. It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

There are a lot of discounts or freebies at restaurants for Veterans. To participate or enjoy be sure you know what identification is required. Some will offer a full free meal, free meal from a select menu, appetizer, or dessert. Some give a generous discount. Whatever or wherever you choose please know that most Americans in particular thank you profoundly for your service do that we may enjoy the freedoms you protect.

Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who have died while in military service.[3] There is another military holiday, Armed Forces Day, a minor U.S. remembrance that also occurs in May, which honors those currently serving in the U.S. military.

Back to School

Starting Kindergarten, finishing Elementary, heading for Middle School, stepping onto a High School or University campus, it’s that time of year. As summer heads into fall we prepare for the school year ahead.

I know things have changed since I was in school, but the importance of an education was always encouraged in our home. Growing up we were encouraged to shoot for the stars and nothing we wanted to do, be it artist, doctor, nurse, lawyer, astronaught, musician, historian, yoga instructor, writer, or even the next Bill Gates, was always attainable. Now computers take a much more central role in education. Some learn the same curriculum exclusively online in programs like Florida’s K -12 program.

I also have to say if you are homeschooling or considering it, you have my hearty encouragement. My siblings and I started out first in a private school then public. When I was in 3rd grade that changed. My brother was having challenges. (This was before so many things like ADHD, dyslexia, and others became common knowledge.) My mother devoted herself to helping us both with anything we needed. Whether just some homework questions, or entire big concepts that we were not understanding in school. By the end of that year she was spending several hours teaching what they were doing at school. She decided that if she had to spend all that time doing the job, why was she sending us to school?

Check here for the rules, requirements and support in your state.

It was one of the best experiences ever! Not only did we learn at a higher level, we had a rounded curriculum that included, music, socializing with a group of 40 families who were also homeschooling, field trips and things not typically taught now. We went to zoos and museums, wrote book reports, we wrote and published our own newsletter. Birthday parties, libraries, science experiments, and a schedule that still saw us out the door when our friends arrived home thier schools.

When the word homeschooling is mentioned by some, they give a disapproving context. Claims of missing out on the social skills learned in other school settings, is one of the most frequent. I can 100% tell you in my experiences this was absolutely false.

Whatever the case may be the importance of education cannot be denied. Private, Public, Correspondence, Home, or other help prepare you stars to shine brightly in the academic world and later in life.

I’m admitting it, my mother was right! Education helped me become a success later in life. It also taught me to be tenacious while not giving up when life gets challenging. While unforeseen health issues have affected my ability to physically fly to the moon, I have not stopped reaching for the stars.

I hope everyone gets the same encouragement we did. As a help to parents and children everywhere, I’ve compiled 3q33 2esupply lists and provided links to Amazon. Skip the traffic, and the heat while your fingers do the walking. Get it all shipped directly to your door.

Happy 4th of July

From our family to yours Happy 4th of July

Is your July 4th exploding with fun?

Every year in America on July 4th, we celebrate our freedoms. Most of are looking forward to great food friends and family, and a great show of fireworks to finish it off.

In cities and towns large and small people gather for bbqs, potato salad, swimming and maybe some yard games. Those more inclined to rest spend time in the shade, surrounded by good conversations and a chance to catch up. Sip refreshing libations for children and adults. Watch the children expend their energies. Or simply enjoy you peace and quiet in red, white, and blue. On this day Americans happily fly the flag of our nation with pride. You see, this flag represents the sacrifices that have been made both here at home and abroad to give us what we enjoy today. It is unique to this country even though lots of others have done the same. Each independent nation on this world we call earth has a symbol like this. Whether born here, or not we stay here for the unique chance to make our own American dream.

Our traditionally consists of grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, ribs, and or chicken. On occasion, we have even done t-bone steaks. Of course deviled eggs, potato salad, fresh veggie tray, baked beans, chips, flag cake, fruit salad, and watermelon, make for a filling meal.

Our family follows the tradition of fireworks, for the evenings entertainment. We leave it to the professionals to display an awe filled pyrotechnic show. Ours are usually choreographed to music played on a local station.

As I’ve grown older and faced health challenges, I’ve grown to appreciate my father’s stance of watching our local display on tv….in air conditioning, with volume control. My dad’s favorite movie the last 10 years he was with us was Independece Day. He would pull it out every July 4th to watch again. I wish he had been here to see the sequel he wanted.

Will Smith (Actor), & 2 more

As I look at the goings on in our world today, I’m reminded of the speech given in the movie. Is something like that going to be what it takes for humanity to put aside the characteristics I see dominating the news? I truly hope not.

As we prepare for our nation’s birthday this, July 4th, the love, patriotism, and family traditions continue to shape our future generations. From our family to your have a happy and safe 4th of July.

One of my favorite movies.

Flag Cake

This easy, festive cake will be the highlight of your patriotic party.

1 box white or yellow cake mix

1 pint blueberries

1 pint strawberries or 2 pints rasberries

1 LG container Cool Whipcream

1 can Readiwhip or small container Cool Whip with pastry bag and star tip.

Bake cake as directed in a 9 x 13 pan. Cool cake completely. Remove leaf and stem from top of fruit. If using strawberries, slice from top to tip in halves or quarters depending on size. Using whipped cream spread even smooth layer over entire cake. Use toothpick to draw the flag box and red stripes. Star box should be about 4 or inches. A real flag has 13 strips but the cake can only fit about 5. Make sure you leave space between red stripes for white ones. The top and bottom stripes are red.

Place whole blueberries in star box as tightly as possible. This is the blue field for your stars. Gently place rasberries or strawberry strips along red stripes from left to right. Starting at the top next to star field to edge of cake. Place all red stripes. Using readiwhip or pastry bag with star tip, place alternating number rows of stars on blueberry field. (I usually do 5 and 4.)
