April is National Financial Literacy Month. It’s an excellent opportunity to review and upgrade your financial smarts.
Whether you’re just starting or have been earning your way for quite some time, it’s never too late to learn about saving and improving your financial outlook. Developing a budget and building financial knowledge is the foundation for a brighter future.
National Financial Literacy Month places the importance of learning about finances and the tools to learn about them right in the classroom, too. No matter their age, putting the know-how and resources at our children’s fingertips will give them the power to make smart decisions now and in the future.
NATIONAL FINANCIAL LITERACY MONTH HISTORY
The National Endowment for Financial Education launched Youth Financial Literacy Day in 2000. Since then, the event has evolved into a month-long observance supported by Jump$tart Coalition called National Finacial Literacy Month. While no U.S. president has signed a declaration officially proclaiming the month, the House and Senate have fully supported National Financial Literacy Month through joint resolutions. The U.S. Department of Education also promotes the observance.

October Holidays and History
Well, before the Julian and Gregorian calendars, October was the 8th month of the Roman calendar. Octo means eight in Latin. At the time, there were only 10 months. In 700 BC, Numa Pompilius added January and February to the calendar. This change more accurately reflected the length of a year on Earth. As a result, October became the 10th month on the calendar. While other months on the calendar have had days added and subtracted, October has always had 31 days.

During the second month of autumn, asters bloom and so do chrysanthemums. Their colors often pair well with the pumpkins and gourds collected from gardens. And speaking of pumpkins and gourds, holidays like National Pumpkin Seed Day, National Farmer’s Day, National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day, and National Pumpkin Day all offer ways to set the mood.
The Hunter’s Moon is aptly named considering many seek game in the fields and forests. Two meteor showers appear in October. They are the Draconids and the Orionids.
The month is full of sporting events, too. From the World Series to Rugby World Cup finals, sports fans fill the seats. In other activities, October brings a shift in hunting and fishing seasons. Did we mention that National Sports Day is a holiday in October?

And the October Holidays hit the mark with National Nut Day, National Caramel Apple Day, National Candy Corn Day, National Cinnamon Bun Day, and National Apple Betty Day.
Pumpkin pies and ghost stories go hand in hand. As we wrap up the month, and the temperatures drop, we prepare for trick or treaters. There are also a few pie and soup holidays in October.
