Labor Day

Labor Day on first Monday of every September recognizes the men and women who labor to build this country. Through a time-honored tradition with roots in the coordinated efforts of the labor movement of the 1800s, we salute the American workforce.

Since the founding of the United States, the country has relied on its workforce for its infrastructure. From its streets and buildings to its transportation and security, the nation runs on labor. The labor of what we create, build and harvest fuels our education and inspires our dreams.

This National Day also signals the official end of summer. Those who work hard, need time to play, too. With the school year starting and summer winding down, the long weekend beckons. They use the extra day earned to spend with families and catch some R&R. Some will explore cities while others will seek outdoor adventure. No matter where it’s spent, it’s well earned.

Try our Greek Turkey burgers, No-Fail Fresca Sangria, for your celebration. Try some of our other great recipes here.

So if enjoying a last mini vacation, football game, parade, or barbeque, remember all the hard work the American worker has put into the lives we currently enjoy. Take a moment to remember all those teachers, doctors, road crews, miners, steel and auto industry, manufacturing, blue-collar, white-collar and everything in between that have given to the American economy and our way of life.

HISTORY OF LABOR DAY

On September 5, 1882, Labor Day first honored workers in New York City. The observance later moved to the first Monday in September in 1884. However, the observance wasn’t officially recognized by any government entity until 1885 when a municipal ordinance was passed. Interestingly, Oregon recognized the day in 1887 before New York state’s bill passed. As more states recognized the observance, its popularity grew. Then, in 1894, Congress declared the day to be a national observance.

HOW TO OBSERVE LABOR DAY

Many families spend Labor Day weekend on vacation. They pack the campgrounds full or explore tourist towns for one last hurrah! As you celebrate this day, consider and appreciate your hard work and how it has added to the well-being and prosperity of our country. If you must see them, be extra nice to those who don’t get the holidays some of us do. Medical, nurses and health care, all first responders, a lot of retail workers and any others who still have to work today.  Use #LaborDay to post on social media.

NATIONAL WIGGLE YOUR TOES DAY

On August 6, people can flaunt their feet on National Wiggle Your Toes Day! The day promotes paying a bit more attention to our toes and feet.

Step outside and stroll through the lush grass, allowing your toes to enjoy a well-deserved break. They’ll appreciate the change! While you’re at it, treat them to a little buff for some extra shine. Another favorite pastime for bare toes is to splash in water, so why not take them for a swim? Some spas even offer fish that nibble on your toes, giving them a fresh appearance. After that, you’ll enjoy a soothing massage, leaving your toes wiggling with joy!

Even small feet appreciate a soothing massage. Once everyone is feeling relaxed, you might find yourself engaging in some playful toe-tickling games!

Another perspective on this day is to consider going shoe shopping. With the school year approaching, if it hasn’t started already, finding well-fitting shoes is essential for comfort. Happy feet lead to joyful toe-wiggling, so make sure everyone in the family tries on their shoes!

Shoe Fitting Tips

  • Measure your feet.
  • Wear the sock for the shoe.
  • Leave 1/2 inch at the toe (they need to wiggle).
  • Also, leave some room at the heel (1/8 inch).
  • Walk around in the shoes.

It’s true! Giving your toes some attention can feel great, whether you’re enjoying the sand at the beach, relaxing in a park, or just chilling at home. Stretching and wiggling them can help improve circulation and relieve tension. Plus, it’s a nice way to connect with your body and enjoy the moment! Do you have a favorite place to wiggle your toes?

NATIONAL PICNIC MONTH

July is an excellent time for National Picnic Month. The fresh air stirs the appetite, and garden vegetables and fruits make outdoor eating easier.

Picnics hearken back to mid-18th-century al fresco French dining. A bottle of wine, a loaf of bread, some cheese and fruit made for an instant meal under the sky. The word picnic is derived from the French word piquenique.

It’s important to keep the meals simple and focus on the company. Sandwiches, finger foods, and beverages may seem plain, but it’s more about spending time with each other and being in nature.

NATIONAL EARMUFF DAY

National Earmuff Day on March 13th recognizes the creation of the protection that keeps our ears warm. The annual celebration highlights the history of the fun and innovative invention each year.

If you live in a cold climate like Chester Greenwood did, and had large, protruding ears, like Chester Greenwood did, you might be thankful for his invention. National Earmuff Day honors the man who found a better way to keep our ears warm all winter long.

After a day of ice skating in the cold, 15-year-old Chester came up with an idea to keep his big ears warm. Partnering with his grandmother who sewed tufts of fur between loops of wire, Chester soon had a working model.

Farmington, Maine is now the “Earmuff Capital of the World”

On March 13, 1877, he was awarded a patent for his new creation. It was one of many would earn. Greenwood was a prolific inventor, but the invention he is most known for is the earmuff.

For almost 60 years, Greenwood manufactured these ear protectors, which provided jobs for the people in the Farmington, Maine area.
