NATIONAL MOJITO DAY

Each year on July 11th, people across America raise a glass to mark National Mojito Day. The cocktail consists of white rum, sugar, lime juice, sparkling water, and mint.

The Mojito is a traditional Cuban highball, and while rumored to be a drink favored by the author, Ernest Hemingway, it’s never been proven. It seems the story behind Hemingway and the Mojito is a tall tale to attract visitors and to sell drinks. Isn’t every origin story behind a drink designed to sell more of the original anyway?

Whether Hemingway ever had a mojito or even liked it, doesn’t matter. With a low alcohol content, this refreshing cocktail gains popularity in the summertime for its refreshing combination of sweetness, citrus, and mint flavors. The exhilarating flavor says summer and stimulates the palate, too. The Mojito serves up a perfect pairing with barbecues and evenings at the beach.

Lime wedges and mint leaves garnish an ice filled glass of Mojito.

I decided to explore more after the drink was featured in a movie.  In the Bond film Die Another Day.  So I decided to introduce my family and friends after trying them myself.  I even found a great recipe to make it a punch for a party.

Although born in Cuba, the exact origin of the Mojito remains under debate with roots as early as 1586.

A variety of recipes add fruit to the Mojito for unique summer combinations. The already refreshing beverage lends itself to being mixed in large pitchers for serving a crowd or individual drinks for one or two people. Mixes also offer the simplicity of just adding rum. However, fresh, simple ingredients bring out the best flavor of a Mojito.

NATIONAL HOT DOG MONTH

Hot Diggity Dog!  Or should I say dogs! July is National Hot Dog Month according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. Grab your dogs and toppings, because here are some interesting bits on an American classic!

Now that the weather has warmed up and gotten nice outside, grilling season is upon us yet again.  Time to fire up those grills and buy some juicy hamburgers, sausages, and hot dogs, of course!

The exact origins of hot dogs are unknown, but likely their predecessor was brought over by immigrants.  What we do know, however, is how they are made, and what goes into them.  Hot dogs are usually pork or beef, but they can be made from poultry as well.  The meat is put into a machine to be finely ground until it resembles a paste or batter (don’t look it up, trust us).

Spices and flavorings are added for flavor, and some brands add sugar or corn syrup for sweetness. Some brands also add preservatives to extend the shelf life of the product.  After the meat has been finely ground, it is sent to a machine that pumps the meat into the casings.  Some brands use cellulose casings, but others still use a traditional natural casing.  After being injected with meat, the casings go through another machine to link the casings into strands of hot dogs.

Afterward, the strands of hot dogs are sent to an oven to cook. During this stage, smoke may be used to add extra flavor.  After cooking, the dogs are showered in water to let them cool before being sent to packaging. If a cellulose casing was used, the hot dogs are sent to another machine to remove the casing.  Then they are cut into individual dogs, packaged and sealed ready to be shipped to a store near you.

Jubilant in July

July arrives in a blaze of sunshine, backyard gatherings, and patriotic pride. As the heart of summer, this vibrant month invites us outdoors to enjoy long days, warm evenings, family vacations, and community celebrations. From fireworks lighting up the night sky to beach trips, barbecues, and festivals, July captures the spirit of adventure and togetherness that makes summer unforgettable.

This year, July carries special significance as Americans continue commemorating the historic America 250 celebration, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Communities across the nation are hosting special events, educational programs, concerts, historical exhibits, and patriotic gatherings leading up to and surrounding Independence Day on July 4. The milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s history, honor those who shaped it, and celebrate the enduring ideals of freedom and democracy.

Summersgiving Menu

For a delightful Summersgiving celebration, consider a menu that blends the best of summer and Thanksgiving flavors. Start with refreshing appetizers like watermelon feta skewers and grilled corn salad. For the main course, try a smoked turkey breast alongside barbecue ribs, offering a mix of traditional and seasonal tastes. Pair these with vibrant sides such as roasted sweet potatoes with a maple glaze, grilled asparagus, and a quinoa cranberry salad. Finish the feast with desserts that highlight summer’s bounty, like peach cobbler and berry pavlova. To complement the meal, serve a selection of chilled beverages including iced herbal teas and citrus-infused water.

NATIONAL ICE CREAM SODA DAY

On June 20th enjoy a cool, frothy ice cream soda.  It is National Ice Cream Soda Day!

There are many claims to the invention of this delicious treat.  One such claim was made by a Mr. Robert McCay Green.  According to Green, he created the beverage in 1874 in Philadelphia when he ran out of ice for his shaved ice treats.  Substituting ice cream, he had a hit on his hands. Green even put in his will that his gravestone read “Here lies the originator of the ice cream soda.”

Philip Mohr of Elizabeth, New Jersey would mix soda water with ice cream to make the drink colder.  This practice took place as earlier as 1862 beating out Mr. Green’s claim.

Advertisements in an 1862 Newport Daily News for Sheld’s Celebrated Ice Cream Soda encourages customers to “Try It, Try It, Try It, It.”  By the looks of it, it was something new at the time.

Whenever the ice cream soda was invented, it was certainly a winning combination.  For generations, we have been enjoying these creamy carbonated desserts at pharmacies and soda fountains across the country.
