NATIONAL ANTI-BOREDOM MONTH

National Anti-Boredom Month during July encourages us to identify what makes us bored and find ways to combat it!

July was selected, according to the founder Alan Caruba, because after July 4th, there’s not much going on and it’s the hotter part of the summer break from school. That’s no excuse to experience boredom during July, though.

When fending off boredom, it’s important to know what the symptoms are and why we get bored. We often associate being bored with having nothing to do, but that’s not always the case. Many times, we have plenty to do or are even doing it, but the task at hand does not stimulate our minds. It may be repetitive or not challenging enough.

When this happens, we can become irritable, tired, or begin to not care about how well we do a task. We may also seek out stimulation to relieve the boredom. Depending on what we seek, it may be good or bad for us; We can form good habits or bad addictions.

Play – A great approach to beat boredom is to play board games.
Get active – Exercise not only stimulates the mind, but it also helps to transform the environment and enhances health.
Visit a museum, read a book, or enroll in a class to learn.
Clean – Cleaning up a crowded closet, cabinet, or even garage gives you a little sense of satisfaction.
Cooking provides us two ways to feel pleased since we can make it in our own kitchens using foods we like.
Be creative — Even if you don’t often produce, attempting can help break the cycle of boredom.
Volunteer – Sometimes we have to reevaluate why we were bored in the first place after helping someone who needs something more than we do.
Visit a friend or neighbor to be sociable. That includes you, kids! cousins, aunts, or uncles

HISTORY

NATIONAL DAY OF UNPLUGGING

On the first Friday in March, National Day of Unplugging, kicks off a 24 hour period from sundown to sundown, to unplug, unwind, relax and do things other than using today’s technology, electronics, and social media.

Look around the average American household. Smartphones, computers, gaming systems, and smart TVs may not fill every nook and cranny, but gradually these devices are taking up residence and bandwidth in our homes and brains. According to Pew Research, the typical American family contains approximately 5 connected devices. Media, friends, entertainment, education, work, and more are all at our fingertips. The amount of information available to us is at an all-time high and the amount of connectedness goes with us everywhere.

Disconnecting or unplugging from all the digital static offers us an opportunity to reset. It also allows us to make more human connections with the people around us. Digital connections lack the tactile essence of the real world such as sounds, smells, and touch. Eye contact, for example, lacks depth in the digital world. In-person, however, we gain a sense of someone even if we don’t know what it is yet.

Another benefit of unplugging is better sleep. When we push away from the computer, put down the smartphone, and turn off the computer, we’re more likely to stretch our legs. Going outdoors into the fresh air, we might actually get more natural exercise causing our bodies to sleep better.

Other things about unplugging that might surprise you are that you’ll find more time to do the things you keep saying you have no time to do. For example, reading that book or visiting with an old friend, cleaning out the closets, or hiking a trail. What’s on your list that National Day of Unplugging will help you get finished?

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalDayOfUnplugging

It’s pretty simple really. Make a plan with a friend or two ahead of time. Turn off the smartphones, computers, personal assistants, gaming systems, and televisions. Start your day by singing in the shower. Read the newspaper. Meet a friend for breakfast. Go to the library and use the Dewy Decimal System. Have a conversation uninterrupted by a notification. How else will you spend the day? Make sure to sign the Unplugging Pledge, too!

Take a break from technology and use #NationalDayOfUnplugging to post on social media the day before to spread the word.

NATIONAL VISION BOARD DAY

National Vision Board Day on the second Saturday in January encourages us to set our goals in a visual way. Get out the sticky notes, markers, and inspiration and start plotting your goals for the new year!

Vision board parties began in 2010 between a group of friends as a way for people to get together in a fun environment to set goals, cast a vision and dream out loud in a tangible way. They then mount on their completed vision boards on their walls where they would see them every day. Seeing their hopes and dreams helps set in motion these visions and ideas to become a reality.

Many actors, musicians, fashion and entertainment-based people have been participating in this since its inception. Vision boards help people remember their goals and concepts on a daily basis.
