EAT YOUR JELL-O DAY

July 12 easily directs us what to do on Eat Your Jello Day! With plenty of flavors to choose from, you should have no problem finding one you like.

Trademarked in 1897 by Pearle Wait of Leroy, New York, Jell-O is the novel and fun dessert loved by millions. Francis Woodward, who later purchased the recipe and trademark, eventually made Jell-O a household name. With 21 different flavors, Jell-O satisfies every taste and can be enjoyed in numerous combinations.

Jell-O’s primary ingredient is gelatin. Gelatin consists of collagen, specifically animal collagen. It’s a protein extracted from the connective tissues of cows and pigs. Once the protein is broken down and extracted, the collagen is dried and ground into a fine powder.

Jell-O has been the subject of many classroom art and science projects throughout the years. From the study of viscosity and laser beams to gelatin artwork, Jell-O inspires in and outside the kitchen.

Eat Your Jell-O Day specifically tells us to eat. So, whether it is molded, layered, or mixed with fruit, vegetables, or marshmallows, be sure to have some. It’s delicious as a salad, dessert, or even a shot. Jell-O doesn’t break the budget either, nor does it add too many calories. Where can you go wrong?

WORLD MILK DAY

Real milk takes the spotlight on World Milk Day, always on June 1. The day is intended to bring attention to activities connecting the dairy sector.

The annual observance is marked with events across the globe: milking demonstrations and farm visits; games and competitions; concerts; distribution of milk products; and conferences, seminars and information sharing.

Did you know:
The dairy sector supports more than one billion people’s livelihoods.
More than six billion people globally consume dairy products, making it a $413.8 billion market.

China is the fastest-growing dairy market. Europe, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina are the primary dairy-producing countries.

However, drinking milk in the U.S. has been on the decline since about 2000. In the 1980s, more than 50 percent of the dairy products regulated by the USDA was beverage milk. By 2015, that had dropped to 33 percent. Prompting the downward trend, according to market watchers, is the annual decline in the market consumption of ready-to-eat cereals. WORLD MILK DAY HISTORY

In 2001, the United Nations selected June 1 as World Milk Day to celebrate the essential contributions of the dairy sector to sustainability, economic development, livelihoods, and nutrition.

National Dairy Month

National Dairy Month in June celebrates the many contributions of the dairy industry to our health and economy.

Dairy products contribute to our health in numerous ways. An 8-ounce glass of milk has more nutrients than the same serving size of juice. It’s packed with protein, too. And cheese is udderly delicious!

Here’s a list of popular dairy products you might find during Dairy Month:

  1. Milk (whole, skim, 2%, lactose-free, flavored)
  2. Cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, provolone, feta, blue cheese)
  3. Yogurt (plain, flavored, Greek yogurt, yogurt drinks)
  4. Butter (salted, unsalted, clarified butter)
  5. Ice cream (various flavors and varieties)
  6. Cream (heavy cream, whipping cream, sour cream)
  7. Cottage cheese
  8. Cream cheese
  9. Ricotta cheese
  10. Mascarpone cheese
  11. Buttermilk
  12. Condensed milk
  13. Evaporated milk
  14. Flavored milkshakes
  15. Sherbet
  16. Sour cream
  17. Whipped cream
  18. Yogurt-based desserts (parfaits, yogurt bowls, smoothies)
  19. Dairy-based spreads (cheese spreads, cream cheese spreads)
  20. Dairy-based dips (ranch dip, spinach dip, queso dip)

These are just a few examples of the dairy products you might come across during Dairy Month. Keep in mind that availability may vary depending on your location and personal preferences.

Beyond the benefits that go into our bodies, the dairy industry fuels our economy. From the farmer and cheese production to distribution and the grocers who stock their shelves with products there’s a non-stop demand for all the delicious ways we enjoy dairy products.

HISTORY

National Dairy Month began in 1937 to promote dairy products. The Dairy Council sponsors the month.

National Iced Tea Month

As the temperature heats up in June, it’s a perfect time to celebrate National Iced Tea Month!

Iced Tea Day is June 10! Try incorporating some fresh fruits or vegetables since it’s thier Month too. Besides iced tea goes well with any kind of salad.

Brewing the ideal pitcher of iced tea is a matter of taste. Mine is the Tetley Brand. Lots of restaurants brew Lipton. Depending on your taste, you may prefer sun tea, sweet tea or unsweetened tea. Perhaps your palate leans more toward a fruitier tea or a stronger type of tea. As long as it’s iced, June is the month your tea is celebrated.

Iced tea was made as early as the 1870s, but an English merchant by the name of Richard Belchynden brought the beverage to popularity. During the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis temperatures began to soar. Belchynden crossed the Atlantic to sell black tea steeped hot and served to the American public. Under the conditions, fairgoers were interested in cooler beverages. Belchynden needed to switch strategies, or he would have no sales. By brewing a stronger tea and pouring it over ice, the merchant created a new product to sell.

NATIONAL WILDFIRE AWARENESS MONTH

National Wildfire Awareness Month dedicates the entire month of May to prevention and preparedness.

While wildfires may not be prevalent in every state, the responsibility to be aware and alert belongs to all of us. The causes of wildfires can occur in every state, and as mobile as our lifestyles have become, we each need to be prepared.

According to the National Interagency Fire Center, humans cause an average of 68% of fires per year in the United States. Of those human-started fires, 2.8 million acres burn each year. In 2018, 8,767,492 acres burned due to human-started and lightning strikes.

There are steps to take to both prevent wildfires and prevent them. From fire-resistant building materials to following the safety protocols for handling fire when camping, heating your home or storing fuel, we can all take part in reducing wildfires.

NATIONAL WILDFIRE AWARENESS MONTH HISTORY

National Wildfire Awareness Month has been declared in 10 western states to increase prevention and preparedness for wildfires throughout the country.
