National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month is an educational campaign focusing on the significance of physical fitness as well as eating nourishing meals. Taking charge of your health contributes to overall well-being; as well as losing weight or staying at your ideal weight, which reduces risks of chronic illness such as heart disease and diabetes.

The campaign, originally “National Nutrition Week,” was first launched in 1973, with the theme “Invest in Yourself – Buy Nutrition.” The American Dietetic Association (ADA) was an early advocate in getting the message to the public organizing educational events held in schools and health care centers.

By the beginning of 1980, due to an intense increase in popularity, the House of Delegates expanded National Nutrition Week to National Nutrition month. ADA is now known as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and, with more than 70,000 members, is the world’s largest organization of registered dietitian nutritionists and dietetic technicians. This year’s theme is “Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle,” focusing on exercising regularly and making the best food choices.

HISTORY

National Nutrition Month began in March 1973, and is an educational campaign focusing on the significance of physical fitness as well as eating nourishing meals. The campaign was immediately embraced by members of the American Dietetic Association as an effective way to promote messages about nutrition all over the country and world. Taking charge of your health contributes to overall well-being; as well as losing weight or staying at your ideal weight, which reduces risks of chronic illness such as heart disease and diabetes.

World DIABETES DAY

Around the globe on November 14th, World Diabetes Day raises awareness and provides education concerning a disease that affects over 400 million adults internationally.

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar levels. It is also a leading cause of blindness, amputation, heart disease, and kidney disease. Besides causing severe medical issues, the condition also causes millions of premature deaths each year. In fact, diabetes has become one of the leading causes of death around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that 1.6 million people died from diabetes in 2016. By the year 2045, approximately 629 million adults will have diabetes.

A large number of people affected by diabetes is a source of concern for global health care workers. Awareness, education, action, and research all can make a difference. In many cases, Type 2 diabetes is preventable.

Ways to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes:
  • Eliminate sugar and refined carbs
  • Work out regularly and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle
  • Make water the primary beverage
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Quit smoking
  • Eat a high fiber diet
  • Optimize Vitamin D levels
  • Take natural herbs, such as curcumin and berberine, that increase insulin sensitivity

Type 2 diabetes is not preventable for everyone. However, making healthy choices provides the best chance of not getting it. In the United States, 9 out of every 10 cases of diabetes can be avoided if the above lifestyle changes are implemented. Families, schools, workplaces, communities, and healthcare providers can all work together to make healthy choices easy ones.

While Type 1 diabetes is not as preventable, it can be managed well with insulin injections. Managing Type 1 diabetes might also require frequent blood sugar monitoring, eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight. Education is key to learning how to manage symptoms of Type 1 diabetes.

WORLD DIABETES DAY HISTORY

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) was founded in 1950 in Amsterdam. Together with the WHO, the IDF created World Diabetes Day in 1991. The goal was to raise awareness of the rising threat of diabetes around the world. In 2006, the day became one of the official United Nations Days. World Diabetes Day is held on November 14th each year to commemorate the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting who co-discovered insulin in 1922. Today, this day is observed in 170 countries and territories.

Recent themes for World Diabetes Day include:

  • 2018-2019: Families and Diabetes
  • 2017: Women and Diabetes
  • 2016: Eyes on Diabetes
  • 2015: Healthy Eating
  • 2014: Go Blue for Breakfast

The theme for World Diabetes Day 2021-23 is Access to Diabetes Care.

Millions of people with diabetes around the world do not have access to diabetes care.  People with diabetes require ongoing care and support to manage their condition and avoid complications.  We cannot wait any longer for: Medicine, technologies, support and care to be made available to all people with diabetes that require them.  Governments to increase investment in diabetes care and prevention.  The centenary of the discovery of insulin presents a unique opportunity to bring about meaningful change for the more than 530 million people living with diabetes and the millions more at risk.

NATIONAL VITAMIN C DAY

National Vitamin C Day on April 4th each year shares all the ways vitamin C nurtures and benefits our health, inside and out!

While Vitamin C is widely recognized for warding off colds, the vitamin is also clinically proven to be a powerhouse in other areas of health, too. For example, Vitamin C may reduce blood pressure and potentially lower the risk of heart disease. Those at risk of gout can lower that risk by increasing their intake of Vitamin C.

Topically, Vitamin C keeps skin healthy by protecting it from oxidative damage caused by daily exposure to light, heat, and pollution. The popularity of topical vitamin C products has risen dramatically.

With the right product, adding Vitamin C to your beauty regimen can brighten your skin, reduce inflammation, and promote healthy collagen production. Vitamin C brightens just about any health routine.

With today’s health concerns this is an easy way boost your immune system. With colds, flu’s, and of course Coronavirus, your immune system is very important. A vital immune system has so far helped me avoid catching the rounds of illnesses every year. With other health conditions making a simple cold or flu take on new meaning.

I take both a good multi vitamin and in today’s world I’ve added extra sources to my regime. Cranberry, pineapple, tart cherry, and others in place of sodas for instance, help me stay away from my Dr’s office.

While I take all prevention guidelines seriously, this addition while not a free pass makes me more confident in my immune system that for years has helped me avoid catching viruses being passed around.

It might surprise you to know that citrus fruits, while high in vitamin c, are not the foods with the most. Oranges contain approximately 70 mg of vitamin C. These foods contain even more:

Rosehips – 119 mg
Red bell pepper – 95 mg
Guava – 126 mg
Papaya – 96 mg
Chili Pepper – 109 mg

NATIONAL CANCER PREVENTIONS MONTH

Nearly everyone who receives a life-changing diagnosis asks if there was anything they could have done to prevent it. National Cancer Prevention Month tackles that question during February.

According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly 1.9 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States. Nearly half of those diagnoses are breast, prostate, lung, pancreas, or colon cancers. And yet, more than 40 percent of all cancer diagnoses can be linked to a preventable cause – nearly half.

National Cancer Prevention Month focuses on the things we can control to lessen our odds of developing cancer. Five of the top recommendations for lessening our risk include:

  • Regular exercise
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Eating healthy foods
  • Quitting or never starting smoking
  • Limiting alcohol use

Other actions that help to prevent cancer or catch it early include routine checkups, treating or preventing other health conditions, and knowing your risk factors. We can’t stop every form of cancer yet, but we do have the tools to decrease our risk factors.

HOW TO OBSERVE #CancerPreventionMonth

Take prevention seriously in February and learn more about lessening your risk factors. We can’t do anything about hereditary risks, but there are many steps we can do to better our odds of avoiding a cancer diagnosis. Other ways to participate include:

  • Support research into preventative measures.
  • Encourage your loved ones to join you on a journey of prevention.
  • Speak to your doctor about your risk factors.
