JUNE IS MEN’S HEALTH MONTH

Throughout June, Men’s Health Month focuses on improving the lifestyles of men. While there are several approaches to improving overall health, diet and exercise are the targets of any changes.

All month long, community events and clinics take place to increase awareness of the leading health concerns men face. It’s important to encourage the men in our lives to get regular checkups and be aware of the risks for their age, ethnicity, and lifestyle.

International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day (IND) is observed around the world May 12 (the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth in 1820). The day is set aside to honor and note the many contributions nurses make to society. Nurses care for our loved ones at some of the most challenging times of their lives. They may run short of time, but not compassion.

In Australia, Canada, the United States, and other countries, International Nurses Day often is part of a week-long celebration, usually referred to as National Nurses Week.

INTERNATIONAL NURSES  DAY HISTORY

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965.

Florence Nightingale became an essential figure in nursing in the 1850s during the Crimean War. She was stationed at a hospital where she headed a group of nurses who cared for injured British soldiers. When she first arrived at the hospital, she was struck by the desperate condition of the facilities. So, she imposed strict standards of care and ensured that the wards were kept clean and well stocked with food and medical supplies. Nightingale’s experiences led her to campaign for reform in health care and nursing. In 1860 she opened the Nightingale School of Nursing at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London.

NATIONAL STUDENT NURSE DAY

National Student Nurse Day takes part in National Nurses Week on May 8th. The day honors student nurses as they pursue a career in medicine.

Student Nurses are at the cutting edge of technology, learning the latest life-saving techniques. At the same time, they are practicing skills in programs that have been built upon medical science. Each year, the demand for nurses grows. Now more than ever, the nursing field needs more people dedicated to the field of medicine. Their drive to care, learn, and specialize in nursing will make a difference in the lives of millions of individuals and the families who love them each year.

A registered nurse (RN) will attend four years of nursing school to attain a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Nurses also branch out into specialties advancing their careers into other areas of medicine.

National Student Nurses Day celebrates these students and their achievements.

NATIONAL STUDENT NURSES DAY HISTORY

In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health proposed a Nurse Day observance. While a proclamation never came, National Nurse Week was observed the following year. The American Nurses Association established National Student Nurse Day to recognizes student nurses in 1998.
