NATIONAL LEMON MERINGUE PIE DAY

National Lemon Meringue Pie Day on August 15th gives pie lovers and lemon lovers a chance to celebrate. Tart lemon curd and delicate meringue sing together in this deliciously bright pie.

When making a lemon meringue pie, the crust is usually made with shortbread pastry. The filling for the pie is lemon curd. Of course, the topping is a fluffy and crisp meringue.

Whip egg whites to stiff peaks to make a meringue. Add sugar to make it sweet. Meringues are baked in a slow oven so when they’re finished, they come out crisp and golden.

When life throws you lemons, make lemon meringue pie!

Since meringue is versatile, it can be baked into individual servings with fruit fillings. Pastry chefs also like to make meringue cookies, too. By adding cocoa, coffee or any number of flavorings, the light, airy cookies melt in your mouth. The same applies to meringue pies.

The meringue was perfected in the 17th century. Meanwhile, lemon meringue pie as we know it today was developed in the 19th century.

This once wild berry became domesticated during the early 1900s thanks to the observations of Elizabeth Coleman White and the research of Dr. Frederick V. Coville. Before their efforts, wild blueberries were never successfully transplanted and raised in any farming operation for personal or commercial production. The only way to enjoy fresh blueberries was to seek them out where they grew naturally.

These are great for low carb, Keto diets. No guilt and all of the flavor.

Through the efforts of White and Coville, today producers and private gardeners bring to fruition these amazingly delicious berries. Whether from farm to table or from the farmer to the grocer to you, these vibrant berries pack a punch in vitamins and health benefits.  They make a great snack all on their own or enhance a meal, make stellar desserts or sauces.  Whatever this berry does, it does with panache!

Summersgiving Menu

For a delightful Summersgiving celebration, consider a menu that blends the best of summer and Thanksgiving flavors. Start with refreshing appetizers like watermelon feta skewers and grilled corn salad. For the main course, try a smoked turkey breast alongside barbecue ribs, offering a mix of traditional and seasonal tastes. Pair these with vibrant sides such as roasted sweet potatoes with a maple glaze, grilled asparagus, and a quinoa cranberry salad. Finish the feast with desserts that highlight summer’s bounty, like peach cobbler and berry pavlova. To complement the meal, serve a selection of chilled beverages including iced herbal teas and citrus-infused water.

GREAT AMERICAN PIES MONTH

February makes an excellent time for Great American Pies Month. Fill the whole month by tasting delicious pies from around the country! How many pies will it take to find your favorite?

Pie makers get ready to count the ways of making pies. From crust to filling, we dream of the mouthwatering goodness that goes into each slice. Where do we even begin?

Apple springs to mind, of course. There’s no doubt there. And blueberry pie is popular, too. National Cherry Pie Day is the only one celebrated in February. In Texas, they make a dewberry pie. We could, no doubt go on until we reach zucchini pie. Somewhere in all those, we would find key lime and Mississippi Mud, pecan, and peanut butter. We can’t forget coconut or lemon meringue. For those with an extra sweet tooth, head to Indiana for the sugar cream pie. Did we forget the traditional pumpkin pie?

But in the middle of a cold winter’s day, one way to warm up the whole house and the people in it is with a savory pot pie. Stuffed inside a flaky golden crust are the tender chunks of vegetables, beef or chicken, and a thick and hearty broth steaming full of goodness.

GREAT AMERICAN PIE MONTH HISTORY

HOW TO OBSERVE #GreatAmericanPieMonth

We didn’t come close to naming all the best pies in America. However, that’s not what the month is about. It’s about enjoying them. Bake them, share them, eat them. Use #GreatAmericanPiesMonth to share your favorite pies and recipes on social media.

NATIONAL PIE DAY

National Pie Day on January 23rd celebrates one of the Nations’ favorite desserts. No matter how you slice it, pie in just about any form makes a crowd happy. Fruit pies, berry pies, cream pies – they’re mouth water servings of homemade goodness.

National Pie Day was created simply to celebrate the pie.  It is a day for all to bake or cook their favorite pies.  Even more importantly, it is a day set aside for all to enjoy eating pies!

The first pies appeared around 9500 BC in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age.

Fun Tidbit – Pie throwing:
Cream filled or topped pies are favorite props for humor.  Throwing a pie in a person’s face has been a staple of film comedy since Ben Turpin received one in Mr. Flip in 1909.

NATIONAL PIE DAY HISTORY

The American Pie Council created National Pie Day in 1986 to commemorate Crisco’s 75th anniversary of “serving foods to families everywhere.”
