Toasted marshmallows are a special part of summer evenings around a bonfire. Also, what better way to kick off a long weekend than to enjoy a delicious, warm, gooey, toasted marshmallow?

Add a pair of graham crackers and a chocolate bar – and ask for s’more! Depending upon personal preference, heat marshmallows to various degrees from gently toasted to a charred outer layer. To char the outer layer, ignite the marshmallow then quickly blow it out.

Marshmallows now come in a variety of flavors as well as sizes for maximum toasting opportunities. For a fun alternative, try roasting Marshmallow Peeps. Watch them closely as the granular sugar coating will burn more quickly.

Believe it or not, marshmallows date back to Ancient Egypt. The mallow plant provided a sap that the Egyptians used to create a candy with nuts and honey.

Ligonier, Indiana holds an annual Marshmallow Festival and is the marshmallow capital of the world.

Homemade marshmallows use sugar, unflavored gelatin, corn syrup, and flavoring. Try this recipe.

NATIONAL ROASTING MONTH

National Roasting Month is an annual designation observed in November. As you plan your big holiday meals, making a roast is something that should undoubtedly be near the top of the list.

Roasting is a method of cooking that uses dry heat with hot air covering the food from all sides to cook evenly. This type of cooking can enhance flavor, and is a healthy alternative to frying food (depending on the seasonings you’re using).

Some old fan-favorite foods to roast are steak, chicken, turkey, ham, beef, potatoes, and other vegetables. A classic pot roast contains some sort of meat, with potatoes, carrots, and onions roasted with it. All the flavors of meat, veggies, and spices simmering together for several hours makes for a mouth-watering supper for the family.

Holiday Ready?

It’s that time of year! Halloween just passed now its time to get ready for the rest of the holiday season…

Thanksgiving is a beloved American holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November each year, traditionally marked by a festive feast where families and friends gather to express gratitude for the blessings in their lives. It has deep historical roots, dating back to the early 17th century when the Pilgrims and Native Americans shared a meal of thanksgiving.

Today, it’s a time for people to reflect on their blessings, indulge in a lavish spread of turkey, stuffing, and various side dishes, and spend quality time with loved ones. Parades, football games, and the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City add to the festive spirit, making it a time of unity and appreciation for the joys of life.

Winter holidays are a cherished time of year when people around the world come together to celebrate the spirit of the season. In many countries, Christmas takes center stage, marked by festive decorations, the exchange of gifts, and gatherings with family and friends. This holiday is steeped in tradition, with the lighting of the Christmas tree, the singing of carols, and the story of Santa Claus, who brings joy and presents to children. While the religious significance of Christmas varies, it remains a time for reflection, gratitude, and spreading goodwill.

Another winter holiday celebrated by many is New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. As the year draws to a close, people engage in lively parties, fireworks, and countdowns to welcome the new year with optimism and resolutions. It’s a time to bid farewell to the past and embrace the future, symbolized by the striking of the midnight clock. Winter holidays also encompass a diversity of celebrations, such as Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Diwali, each with its unique customs and rituals. Regardless of the specific holiday, the winter season unites people in the warmth of togetherness, fostering a sense of hope and renewal as they navigate the cold and dark days.
