The Allure of August’s Birthstone: Peridot

August’s birthstone, peridot, captivates with its vibrant green hues and rich history, embodying a romanticism that resonates through the ages. Known for its unique olive to lime shades, peridot is one of the few gemstones that occurs in only one color, albeit in varying intensities. This striking gem has been cherished since ancient times, often associated with light and clarity, giving it a celestial quality that enchants lovers and collectors alike. The romantic essence of peridot is not just in its color but also in the myriad of meanings and legends that surround it, making it a popular choice for romantic gifts.

In ancient civilizations, peridot was often referred to as the “gem of the sun.” The Egyptians believed it symbolized the sun’s light, providing protection and strength. They adorned their jewelry with this gem, associating it with the goddess of fertility, Isis. This connection to divine power and protection has led many to regard peridot as a stone that brings harmony and balance to relationships. The romantic symbolism of peridot extends beyond its historical significance; it is often seen as a stone of love, believed to inspire feelings of affection and compassion in romantic partnerships.

The symbolism of peridot is further enhanced by its connections to renewal and growth. The stone is said to bring abundance and prosperity to its wearer, making it an appropriate gift for anniversaries and celebrations of love. Its vibrant green hue is reminiscent of lush landscapes and new beginnings, allowing lovers to reflect on the growth of their relationships. This association with renewal makes peridot a fitting stone for couples looking to reinvigorate their bond, inviting fresh energy into their lives together.

In addition to its romantic symbolism, peridot is also linked to emotional healing. It is believed to dispel negative energy and promote positivity, making it a powerful talisman for relationships. Many couples choose peridot not only for its beauty but also for its reputed ability to enhance emotional well-being. This dual nature—being both a beautiful adornment and a source of emotional strength—positions peridot as an ideal gemstone for those navigating the complexities of love.

As we embrace the beauty of peridot, it becomes clear that this august birthstone is more than just a gem; it is a vibrant symbol of love, renewal, and protection. Whether given as a gift or worn as a personal talisman, peridot captures the essence of romanticism, making it a timeless choice for those wishing to celebrate their love. Its rich history and multifaceted symbolism ensure that it will remain a cherished stone for generations to come, echoing the enduring nature of love itself.

NATIONAL AMARETTO DAY

Each year on April 19th, National Amaretto Day recognizes a liqueur known around the world for its flavor and aroma.

Amaretto in Italian means “a little bitter” and is made from bitter almonds or apricot kernels or both. Makers infuse it in pure alcohol or brandy, resulting in a strong almond flavor. This traditionally Italian liqueur carries a reputation for being fragrant.

Taking us back to the 1525 Renaissance in Saronno, Italy, painter Bernardino Luini selected a young innkeeper as his model for a fresco of the Madonna of the Miracles. In gratitude for being selected, the innkeeper gave the artist a gift of her own secret blend of almond and brandy.

Centuries later, the well-guarded recipe Saronno, Italy began producing the amaretto on a larger scale. At the turn of the 20th century, Disaronno began producing its amaretto for a broader market. The liqueur began appearing for sale in advertisements in the United States in the late 1940s. The family still bottles their recipe today.

Another Amaretto tale comes from the same area of Italy. However, this story tells of a young Lazzaroni couple blessed by the Cardinal of Milan in 1718. The couple honored his visit with a unique recipe of their own, producing an amaretto cookie like no other. And this one came in a bottle. Of course, their recipe was also a closely guarded family secret for generations. In 1851, the Lazzaroni family began selling their amaretto liqueur, and the family is still producing it today.

NATIONAL OPEN AN UMBRELLA INDOORS DAY

National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day is observed annually on March 13th. One often wonders how superstitions are passed on from one generation to the next.  There is an old superstition about opening your umbrella indoors and that it would bring you bad luck. National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day encourages you to do just that and note if you have any bad luck.

While umbrellas have been around for over 3000 years, the origin of the superstition is strangely obscure.  There is some suggestion that ancient Egyptians thought it offended the gods to open an umbrella where there was already shade.  However, the more modern version of the superstition would suggest bad things happening as a result of poor timing or inconvenience.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Test the theory that opening an umbrella inside brings bad luck by doing so and noting any bad luck that comes your way.  You might reduce your risk of bad luck by opening the umbrella in a wide space versus a tight hallway to avoid knocking pictures off the wall.  And may we suggest giving those around you a sign of warning as well.  We wouldn’t want any eyes being poked out.  Use #OpenAnUmbrellaIndoorsDay to post on social media.

NATIONAL CHOPSTICKS DAY

Each year on National Chopsticks Day, people worldwide celebrate the humble and ancient utensils on February 6th.

Around 1200 B.C., Chinese cooks began using chopsticks to prepare food. These tools were likely long enough to reach into hot cooking pots. Then about 400 B.C., when fuels for cooking became scarce, food was prepared in smaller pieces reducing the number of resources needed to cook it. At the same time, the need for sharp eating utensils faded, and shorter chopsticks entered the scene.

The Chinese term for chopsticks is kuai-tzu.

Once these handy eating tools found their way to the dinner table, they spread around the world. Portable and elegant in their design, they also vary in style from region to region.

Today chopsticks may be made from wood such as bamboo or aspen. Elaborately carved chopsticks may be cut from jade, ivory, or wood, and artisans may ornately paint some chopsticks with miniature scenes.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalChopsticksDay

Use chopsticks to eat your meals. Practice using chopsticks or teach someone how to use them. Share your favorite set of chopsticks or your favorite meal to eat with chopsticks. Visit your favorite restaurant where chopsticks are provided. Make sure you give them a shoutout, too! Of course, you should invite someone to celebrate with you, also! Maybe ask them to join you in a chopstick competition to see who is the most proficient using them. Be sure to use #NationalChopsticksDay to share on social media.

Not all pets are of the Beverly Hills Chihuahua variety. Tips for dressing up your pet:

  • If your pet just doesn’t like dressing up, let them sit this holiday out.
  • Be sure it fits. Restricting movement or ability to breathe can cause injury or illness.
  • Many pets like to chew. Avoid loose or dangling pieces which can cause choking hazards.
