NATIONAL LAGER DAY

National Lager Day on December 10th raises a glass to the third most popular beverage after water and tea. While lager is typically characterized as a light, summer beer we believe that every season deserves to be celebrated with a few of your favorite things.

Lagers are distinguished from other beers by using a cold-conditioning process. The types of yeast used are referred to as “bottom-fermenting” yeast or yeast that can develop at colder temperatures. Before the advent of refrigeration, brewers perfected this process in cellars dug into the ground and filled with ice. Those who taste the delicious results described the lager as “crisp” and “refreshing.” It is no wonder that this method caught on and produced a wide variety of brews synonymous with regional and national brands.

NATIONAL SAXOPHONE DAY

National Saxophone Day commemorates the birth of the woodwind’s inventor, Adolphe Sax, on November 6th. The saxophone is one of the main instruments in jazz music.

Born on November 6, 1814, Adolphe Sax invented many musical instruments including the saxophone. Sax constructed saxophones in several sizes in the early 1840s. On June 28, 1846, he received a 15-year patent for the instrument. The patent encompassed 14 different versions of the fundamental design, split into two categories of seven instruments each and ranging from sopranino to contrabass.

After Sax’s patent expired in 1866, several saxophonists and instrument manufacturers implemented their own improvements to the original design and key work.

Checkout some of these on our favorites Jazz Saxophone Playlist.

Chocolate Cupcake Day

National Chocolate Cupcake Day on October 18th annually celebrates the sweetness of small chocolate cakes. With a dollop of frosting, one sweet serving satisfying chocolate and dessert lovers!

Cupcakes have also been known to be called:

  • Fairy Cakes
  • Patty Cakes
  • Cup Cakes (different from Cupcakes (one-word))

Cupcakes can be traced back to 1796 when a recipe notation of “a cake to be baked in small cups” was written in American Cookery, by Amelia Simmons. The earliest known documentation of the term cupcake was in 1828 in Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats in Eliza Leslie’s Receipts cookbook.

Bakers initially baked their cupcakes in heavy pottery cups. Today, some still use individual ramekins, small coffee mugs, large teacups, or other small ovenproof pottery-type dishes for baking their cupcakes.

Chocolate cupcakes come in a variety of flavors, too. Of course, there’s always the standard chocolate cupcake. But why stop there on a holiday?

  • Chocolate caramel cupcakes satisfy that extra cry for sweetness.
  • Peanut butter chocolate cupcakes are the snackers delight.
  • Get devilishly good cupcakes with Devil’s Food.
  • Cool things off a bit with chocolate mint recipes, too.
  • And you can’t forget chocolate orange cupcakes. Citrus brightens the flavor of any chocolate recipe.

NATIONAL SAUSAGE PIZZA DAY

Food lovers across the country enjoy National Sausage Pizza Day, October 11th of each year. Whether served on a thin or thick crust, sausage pizza goes well with other toppings, too.

Don’t hesitate to add mushrooms and a variety of cheeses. What’s even better about sausage pizza are the different kinds of sausage to choose from. While Italian sausage may be preferred, try experimenting. Add more garlic or try additional spice.

Try smoky sausages such as chorizo or even a kielbasa visit with your local butcher for sausage suggestions. They’ve probably been smoking up the latest experiment just for you to try. Sausage comes in many combinations, too. Lighter forms and different ages offer flavors that complement our toppings. A little sweet with the savory creates a modern taste experience. Sautéd onions add amazing flavor to sausage pizza. While cooking up the onions add a few portabella mushrooms to the pan. Once you’ve added them to your pizza, sprinkle the top with feta cheese and fresh basil. You won’t regret it.

Pizza Facts
  • In ancient Greece, the Greeks covered their bread with oils, herbs, and cheese, which some attribute to the beginning of the pizza.
  • In Byzantine Greek, the word was spelled “πίτα,” pita, meaning pie.
  • The Romans developed a pastry with a sheet of dough topped with cheese and honey, then flavored with bay leaves.
  • The modern pizza had its beginning in Italy as the Neapolitan flatbread.
  • The original pizza used only mozzarella cheese, mainly the highest quality buffalo mozzarella variant. It was produced in the surroundings of Naples.
  • An estimated 2 billion pounds of pizza cheese was produced in the United States in 1997.
  • The first United States pizza establishment opened in New York’s Little Italy in 1905.

NATIONAL HANDBAG DAY

National Handbag Day is observed annually on October 10th. This is a day to celebrate all the different types of handbags.

Not only do handbags come in many shapes and sizes. They can be the size of an envelope or almost as large as an overnight bag. They are available in every imaginable color and designs from leopard and zebra prints to calf skin and rhinestones. There truly is something for every taste and style.

Call it what you will – pocketbook, clutch, reticule, purse, evening bag, case, or pouch – they’ve been coming in handy for thousands of years. The earliest designs were a means of survival, but that didn’t stop the user from being creative. Whether they carried tools, ceremonial accessories or gear, the user often decorated them with beads or died the material. Complex pockets organized even the most elaborate sets of accessories.

Today, the availability of synthetic and natural fibers allows for even more variety in design. Bags offer a range of sizes and styles, too. Whether packing light, casual or sophisticated, these purses offer so much to the modern user.

National Handbag Day was created by PurseBlog.com in 2012.
