National IPA Day

National IPA Day celebrates the beer known as India Pale Ale Beer.

While the IPA is one of the most popular types of craft beers, it’s also making a resurgence with local microbreweries. Many are experiencing success as their brew finds its way into local restaurants and pubs.

The IPA seems to have developed out of an idea from the 1700s. When shipping ale to India, adding hops to the beer increased the longevity of the brew. Brewers thought that hops preserved the beer for long voyages to hot climates. One London brewer gained attention for his ability to brew this particular style of beer. George Hodgson shipped many casks of pale ales to India from London. However, no one knows for sure when or who coined the name India Pale Ale.

Brewers ferment barley to make India Pale Ales. Depending on the length of fermentation, the tannins may cause some bitterness in the beer, even after adding the hops. While IPAs have a reputation of being bitter and hoppy, not all are. They also tend to be crisper than other beers.

NATIONAL DAIQUIRI DAY

Each year on July 19th, people across the United States fill their glasses with a rum-based cocktail and toast to National Daiquiri Day. So, raise your glass and join all of the others in this celebration!

Daiquiri is a family of cocktails whose main ingredients are rum, citrus juice (typically lime), and sugar.

Tasting of sunshine and beaches, it might be hard to believe how the Daiquiri came to be. Back in 1898, men blasted away in the mines of a small community off the coast of Cuba during the Spanish-American War. One American engineer, Jennings Cox, supervised a mining operation located in a village named Daiquiri. Every day after work, Cox and his employees would gather at the Venus bar. Then one day, Cox mixed up Bacardi, lime, and sugar in a tall glass of ice. He named the new beverage after the Daiquiri mines, and the drink soon became a staple in Havana. Eventually, someone added shaved ice, and sometimes lemons or both lemons and limes were used.

In 1909, Admiral Lucius W. Johnson, a U.S. Navy medical officer, tried Cox’s drink and subsequently introduced it to the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C. The popularity of the Daiquiri then increased over the next few decades.

Did you know Strawberry Daquari is one of the most popular flavors? Even if its virgin, strawberry is insanely asked for. Need more Strawberry?

The Daiquiri was one of the favorite drinks of writer Ernest Hemingway and President John F. Kennedy.

While the Daiquiri is sometimes served frozen, combining it in a blender eliminates the need for manual pulverization. Commercial machines produce a daiquiri with a texture similar to a smoothie, and they come in a variety of flavors, too. Using a frozen limeade to create a daiquiri will provide the required texture, sweetness, and sourness all at the same time.

Don’t let improperly prepared food ruin your summer. Use these grilling tips keep you grilling and enjoying the beautiful weather all season long.

  • Wash your hands. Use hand sanitizer when clean water isn’t readily available where you are grilling.
  • Keep food cold until you are ready to put them on the grill. Letting them sit allows bacteria to grow.
  • Don’t mix raw and cooked foods. Keep raw foods separate from each other. Once cooked, use a clean dish to place your final masterpiece. The bacteria from the raw food will contaminate the freshly cooked meal.
  • Keep hot food warm to at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit until ready to be placed in a cooler with ice or refrigerator to prevent bacteria growth. For salads and cold foods, keep them chilled on ice.

NATIONAL BEER DAY HISTORY

On April 7, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt took the first step toward ending Prohibition and signed a law that allowed people to brew and sell beer, in the United States, as long as it remained below 4.0% alcohol by volume (ABV).  Beer drinkers celebrated and were happy to be able to purchase beer again for the first time in thirteen years.

Our research found this day was created as National Beer Day by Justin Smith, a Richmond, Virginia Craft Beer Examiner, and his friend Mike Connolly from Liverpool, England. April 7th corresponds with the date the Cullen-Harrison Act was signed into law and became active. In 2009, Smith and Connolly created a National Beer Day Facebook page. From this page, they invited friends to join, and word spread to many sources.

Fall off the Bone Baby Back Ribs

These are a real treat.  When I say Fall off the Bone, you can take that literally. Our family likes these better than Chili’s or TGI Friday’s, from our oven at home. The biggest trick is cooking them low and slow. These are great for Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, or just a great meal.

Ingredients

<

1 rack St Loius style Baby Back Ribs

Dry Rub

2 Tbsp Brown Sugar (light)
1 Tbsp Ground Paprika
1 Tbsp Onion Powder
2 Tbsp Garlic powder
1/4 tsp Chili Powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
(If desired 1/4 tsp instant coffee)

5 Tbsp Black Velvet
Heavy-Duty Aluminum Foil

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 300°
  • Large rimmed backing sheet
  • Use enough foil to make closed packet of ribs.
  • Remove Silver skin if needed.
  • Place rack of ribs on Aluminum foil (cut in half if to big)
  • Make sure foil edges turned up to keep liquid inside.
  • Pour Black Velvet on both sides of ribs.  It’s okay if it pools on the bottom.
  • Mix together Dry Rub ingredients and sprinkle on both sides of ribs.  You can stack 2 halves in foil.  Just make sure both halves are coated in Black Velvet and Dry Rub.
  • Bring the top of the foil together and fold to make packet.
  • Repeat with both ends.
  • Place on baking sheet and place on middle rack of heated oven.
  • Set timer for 3 hours.  Best of all these are no peak so when timer sounds they are ready to eat!
