February isn’t the only romantic month on the calendar.  Check your relationship’s pulse during Romance Awareness in August. If it needs a jump start, there are lots of ways to put some spark back into the relationship. 

Add excitement by planning the unexpected. Surprise your significant other with a date night with only a few clues as to the destination. None of it needs to be expensive or elaborate, but making an effort to make the evening fun, spontaneous and memorable will be worthwhile. Maybe it’s a note clipped to a single flower saying you’ll pick her up at 7 PM and to wear sandals. It ends up with a picnic on the beach; or it could be a text to him that you’re in the mood for takeout, be ready in an hour – a three-hour road trip later and you’re at the nearest drive-in theater eating hot wings under the stars.

Being aware of and adding more romance into your relationship will be a win-win for both you and your significant other. Passion has always been an essential part of relationships. Sometimes it is the little things that make a big difference, such as; holding hands, a shoulder rub, a flower, making dinner together, playing your favorite song, leaving a personal note, or watching a movie together.

United Nations Day recognizes the founding of the United Nations (UN) in 1945. The celebration is observed annually on October 24th. 

U.N. Day has traditionally been marked throughout the world by meetings, discussions, and exhibits about the achievements and goals of the organization.

The United Nations works for the entire human family of seven billion people and cares for the Earth, our one and only home. ~ Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Today the United Nations consists of 193 member states and 2 observer states. The mission of the United Nation is to maintain international peace and security.

The UN also sets terms for protecting human rights around the world. In 1948, they created international law with a Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The member nations deliver humanitarian aid to populations in crisis. The first aid delivered was an immediate response to the devastation following World War II.

Another aim of the international organization is to promote sustainable development.

Some major achievements of the UN include:

  • The UN peacekeeping budget is less than 0.5% of global military spending
  • Their World Food Programme (WFP) provides food and assistance to 91 million people in 83 countries
  • They also supply vaccines to 45% of the world’s children
  • The UN helps people who displaced by violence, conflict, and persecution

NATIONAL UNITED NATIONS DAY HISTORY

Franklin D. Roosevelt coined the name “United Nations” during World War II. Twenty-six nations united to pledge their governments to continue fighting against the Axis Powers. In 1945, delegates from 50 countries drew up the United Nations Charter in San Francisco, California. They signed the Charter on June 26th, 1945 and it was ratified on October 24th, 1945. United Nations Day originated in 1948.

HOW TO OBSERVE #UNITED NATIONS DAY

Throughout the day, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris hosts conferences and meetings. They also display exhibits of UN achievements. On United Nations Day, schools throughout the world celebrate the diversity of their student bodies. These schools also hold cultural performances and food fairs.

A UN Day concert is held each year to commemorate the day. The concert is held at the General Assembly Hall at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Performers at the concert have included the KBS Traditional Music Orchestra, Stevie Wonder, the Harlem Boys Gospel Choir, and the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.

To participate in United Nations Day, think about how diversity makes our lives better. Make it a goal to learn something about each of the 193 countries that make up the United Nations. Find out what all the flags of each country look like. If you know someone who is of a different nationality, ask them questions about their country of origin. National Streaming Day on May 20 recognizes the advancing and growing technology that makes our mobile lives run more smoothly.

The first computer was invented in the 1940s. It wasn’t until the late 1990s that streaming became accessible. Since then, technology has made huge advancement, resulting in the option to stream just about anything. Luckily, the attraction of streaming pushes technology to improve speed and accessibility.  As technology changes, so does are need to meet our streaming expectations.

Streaming plays such an important part in our daily life we overlook the benefits it provides us. If you look past what we expect, most people would understand the amazing benefits streaming provides. Streaming provides:

  • Opportunity to take the service with us just about anywhere.
  • Ability to customize our own video preferences.
  • Businesses and organizations optional training methods and coordinates meetings.
  • Connection with people from across the world in real time.
  • A cost-efficient alternative to conduct daily activities.
  • Entertainment.

Streaming formats also come in all shapes and sizes. Some services offer music and video streaming, while others offer on-demand services. Despite the varieties available, all streaming services provide benefits to our modern lives.

Today, almost everyone uses some sort of streaming device. Unsurprisingly, there are many types of streaming devices available. Choosing a streaming device is often based on personal preference. The most popular streaming devices are:

In 2014, Roku founded National Streaming Day to celebrate their 10th Anniversary.

  • 1993: During a usual gig, a few computer scientists and engineers from California decide to try out a new technology to their musical performance with friends and family live.
  • 1995: RealNetwork introduces the first live streaming service with capabilities known as the RealPlayer.
  • 1999: A company by the name of Excite@Home Network casts the first webcast for the Democratic Leadership Council.
  • 2008: YouTube holds its first live event called YouTube Live.
  • 2011: Twitch.tv introduces a new streaming platform for video games nabbing 45 million users per month.
  • 2014-2016: Restream.io, Twitter and Facebook/Instagram introduce live streaming services for social media platforms.
  • 2018: Facebook dominates the live streaming market with over over 3.5 million views.
  • 2019: Facebook dominates live streaming with nearly 1.1 billion hours of live videos available for viewing.
  • 2022: Every platform uses streaming options as a way to share information, including National Day Calendar.
