On June 14 we honor Old Glory on National Flag Day.  This day commemorates the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777.

On National Flag Day, Americans show respect for the U.S. Flag and what it represents.  Representing independence and unity, the Star Spangled Banner has become a powerful symbol of Americanism and is flown proudly.

While Betsy Ross has been given credit for stitching together the first American flag, there isn’t any sound evidence supporting the story.  At the same time, there isn’t any to disprove it, either. Part of the conflict is that there were several designs being considered at the same time, many flag makers and more than one claim to the first. During Ross’s Revolutionary time, several standards were carried bearing red and white stripes and varying symbols where the blue field and stars now reside.

Another who laid claim to the first design was Francis Hopkinson. His request for compensation for his design was denied because others contributed to the design final design. 

Since 1777, the design of the flag has been officially modified 26 times.  For 47 years, the 48-star flag was in effect.  In 1959, the 49-star version became official on July 4.  President Eisenhower ordered the 50-star flag on August 21, 1959.

Seventeen-year-old Robert G. Heft of Ohio designed the 50-star American flag.  His was one f the more than 1,500 designs that were submitted to President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation deeming June 14 as Flag Day.  President Wilson stated, “It is the anniversary of the day upon which the flag of the United States was adopted by the Congress as the emblem of the Union.” He also wrote, “On that day rededicate ourselves to the nation, ‘one and inseparable’ from which every thought that is not worthy of our fathers’ first vows in independence, liberty, and right shall be excluded and in which we shall stand with united hearts.”

MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day, a United States Federal holiday, is observed each year on the last Monday in May. We honor and remember all the men and woman who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day is also a day to remember all loved ones that have passed away.

Traditionally on Memorial Dayu, the flag of the United States of America is raised briskly to the top of the staff then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position where it remains until noon. At noon, it is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.

When the flag is at half-staff, the position is in remembrance of the more than one million men and women who gave their lives for their country.  Raising the flag at noon signifies the nation lives, that the country is resolved not to let their sacrifice be in vain but to rise up in their honor and continue to fight for liberty and justice for all.

HISTORY

Honoring the men and women who have died while serving in the military, Memorial Day has been kept in various forms in the United States since the end of the Civil War. General John Logan called for a nationwide day of remembrance on May 5, 1868. On May 30 Decoration Day was first observed.

General James Garfield spoke at Arlington National Cemetery. Generals Grant, Howard, Logan, Pane, Wool, and Hancock attended the ceremony, and volunteers decorated the graves of 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers.

Across the country, humble tributes occurred on that first Decoration Day. Just outside Fort Stevens near Washington, D.C., there was a small cemetery where 40 soldiers were buried, one of whom belonged to a widow from Northern Vermont. He was one of three sons she lost to the war. On Decoration Day, she went to the cemetery carrying 40 wreaths for 40 graves.

Someone placed a laurel wreath upon the head of a Lincoln statue at City Hall, Washington D.C.

In Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railroads transported passengers to the Spring Grove Cemetery.  Flags were displayed at half-mast along the routes.  Floral wreaths were placed on the soldiers’ graves and speeches made.  Many of the first Decoration Days recognized only the Union soldiers, though some included the Confederate soldiers as well.  Over time, the day grew to include all those soldiers lost during the conflict.

Decoration Day gradually became known as Memorial Day and now honors all U.S. military personnel who have died during a military conflict. Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30 until Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968. Since 1971, Memorial Day has been observed the last Monday of May.

Our family typically honors this holiday with a barbecue.  We never forget those, some members of our family who have given their full measure of devotion, for the freedoms we enjoy.

If you do fire up the grill you might want to cook a little extra.  Not only does it make great leftovers or a full meal, throw on some burgers and a brisket for National Hamburger Day on May 28th and National Brisket Day also on May 28th. May is also National Barbecue Month, so light up that grill for some awesome meals.

NATIONAL FIND A RAINBOW DAY

Each year on April 3rd, National Find A Rainbow Day challenges us to look to the sky and find a colorful ray of hope cast across it. 

There are people that see rainbows as an artistic masterpiece in the sky, to others it is a sign of hope and to many a sign of promise.

It can be all three; beauty, hope and promise.

A spectrum of light in the form of a multicolored arc, appearing in the sky, is caused by both reflection and refraction of light in water droplets in the Earth’s atmosphere. These rainbows always appear directly opposite of the sun.  The light is refracted (bent) when it enters a droplet of water, then is reflected inside on the back of the droplet and refracted again when leaving it.

Red is the color that is visible on the outer part of a rainbow and violet on the inside of a primary rainbow. Children learn in science class the mnemonic ROYGBIV to help them to remember the sequence of colors in a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Many forms of airborne water can cause rainbows including, rain, mist, spray, and dew.

Find yourself a rainbow or use the garden hose or a prism to make one yourself.
Families, students, and classrooms, create a rainbow from the colorful hearts on this printable. There’s at least one for every color in the rainbow. Take out your color crayons and finish what we’ve started. Then cut them out and put them in a cheerful, sunny window to brighten the day of someone passing by.

Deviled Eggs Recipe

Ingredients

12 hard boiled eggs, peeled

1 tsp yellow mustard

1 tsp white vinegar

1/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp ground black pepper

1 tsp garlic powder

4 Tbsp Mayo

1 1/2 tsp Paprika

Instructions

Slice eggs in half. Empty yolks into small bowl. Place white halves face up. To bowl of yolks add mustard, vinegar, garlic, salt, pepper, and mayo. Mix well. Place in piping bag with star tip. Pipe yolks mixture into white halves. Sprinkle with paprika. Chill until served. I’ve had lots of versions of these over the years. Some add things like sweet relish, avocado, bacon and others. I prefer mine in this classic recipe. It’s what I grew up with. I’ve also seen the whites dyed different colors. I still like mine this way.

All-American Berry Flag Cake

This easy, festive cake will be the highlight of your patriotic party.

Ingredients

  • 1 box white or yellow cake mix
  • 1 pint blueberries
  • 1 pint strawberries or 2 pints rasberries
  • 1 LG container Cool Whipcream
  • 1 can Readiwhip or small container Cool Whip with pastry bag and star tip.

Directions

  1. Bake cake as directed in a 9 x 13 pan.
  2. Cool cake completely.
  3. Remove leaf and stem from top of fruit. If using strawberries, slice from top to tip in halves or quarters depending on size.
  4. Using whipped cream spread even smooth layer over entire cake.
  5. Use toothpick to draw the flag box and red stripes. Star box should be about 4 or inches.
  6. A real flag has 13 strips but the cake can only fit about 5. Make sure you leave space between red stripes for white ones. The top and bottom stripes are red.

Assembly

Place whole blueberries in star box as tightly as possible. This is the blue field for your stars. Gently place rasberries or strawberry strips along red stripes from left to right. Starting at the top next to star field to edge of cake. Place all red stripes. Using readiwhip or pastry bag with star tip, place alternating number rows of stars on blueberry field. (I usually do 5 and 4.)

For fancy look depending on time you may want to pipe stripes in white whipped cream as well. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
