NATIONAL S’MORES DAY

National S’mores Day on August 10th recognizes the most popular campfire treat! Millions of people of all ages love this gooey, toasted treat. 

S’mores consists of a roasted marshmallow with a layer of chocolate bar sandwiched between two pieces of graham cracker.

The origin of this tasty snack is credited to the entrepreneur Alec Barnum. However, the first recorded version of the recipe can be found in the 1927 publication of Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.  Even though the Girl Scouts were not the first ones to make s’mores, Girl Scout groups describe them in their reports as early as 1925. Earlier recipes used the name “Some Mores.”  It is unclear when the word “S’mores” became the more common name.

Today, many variations on the original s’more find their way around a campfire.

  • Try spreading peanut butter on the graham crackers before adding the other ingredients.
  • Substitute peanut butter cups in place of the chocolate bar.
  • Replace the graham crackers with fudge-dipped cookies.
  • Add banana slices.

Try this S’more Bar recipe at home. Enjoy and share with your friends and family. However, if you think s’mores are too messy for you but enjoy the flavor, add the s’more ingredients to delicious desserts. Cakes, pies, dips, trifles also offer a terrific way to enjoy the taste of a s’more. Make it a delicious part of Family Fun Month this August too!

Make some time this month for family fun. Have a movie night, make your pizza, family game night, make your own ice cream, or sundaes. These simple activities bring us closer.

My parents were considered very old fashioned when we were growing up. We are at least one meal together, it was prepared together and we ate together. Conversation flowed about the day, school, upcoming plans, and what movie it game were we engaging in next.

Those conversations yielded values, appreciation, respect, the value of a dollar, and a lack of reliance on technologies. We learned life skills without knowing it. How to cook, communicate, problem solving, compromise and fairness. If you had asked any of us at the time I’m quite sure we were oblivious, but those lessons have seen us through more than one life challenging event.

So laugh, love and live! As the years go by you’ll always have those memories. So no matter what else comes along the path of life no one can take that from you.

The origins of Family Fun Month have not been determined. Who cares? Use this as a great chance to make lasting memories. If 2020 has taught us anything it should be to remember who is important to you and never take the time you have for granted.

NATIONAL BOMB POP DAY

The last Thursday of June is reserved for enjoying a summertime favorite.  It’s National Bomb Pop Day!   Invented in 1955 in Kansas City, Missouri, Bomb Pops are also known as the red, white and blue Popsicle.  Having one of these frozen treats is a terrific way to kick off the upcoming 4th of July celebrations in your community!

History

On July 30, 1955, in Kansas City, Missouri, James S. Merritt and D.S. Abernethy created the Bomb Pop. Bomb Pop was given a trademark in 1971. Merritt Foods, owned by D.S. Abernethy, closed its doors in 1991, and Wells’ Dairy acquired the firm, along with Bomb Pops.

The Walt Disney Company and Wells’ Dairy agreed to jointly produce Buzz Lightyear Bomb Pops in 2003.

There have been several legal disputes between rivals selling similar-looking popsicles in 2014, but they were ultimately resolved.

Today….

The Bomb Pop is a frozen treat that Wells Enterprises now produces. Cherry, lime, and blue raspberry flavorings are present in the original flavor. There are nine primary Bomb Pop varieties as of 2015.[ Presently available varieties of Bomb Pop include Original, Fruit Bomb, Watermelon, Hawaiian Punch, Warheads, Jolly Rancher, Original Sugar Free, Banana Fudge, Lemonade, Tongue Splashers, and Nerds.

  • It is a popular treat for Independence Day celebrations in the United States.
  • The Bomb Pop is also known as the Firecracker Popsicle.
  • The name “Bomb Pop” was inspired by the Cold War, which was happening at the time the popsicle was invented.

National Zoo and Aquarium Month is an excellent time to plan your trip and make a donation to favorite zoo or aquarium.
