NATIONAL WEED YOUR GARDEN DAY

National Weed Your Garden Day on June 13th each year serves as a reminder to all gardeners to take an extra 5 or 10 minutes while weeding their gardens.

One of the best gardening tips is to stay in control of your garden. Unfortunately, weeds grow fast, very fast. With inattention, they can soon become overwhelming. Giving daily attention to your garden makes it easier to maintain. Weeding 5 or 10 minutes each day will make the job seem bearable. It might even be enjoyable. This way you will be in control, and the weeds will not!

Excessive and unwanted weeds will crowd out plant roots and steal the nutrients that are needed for the plants to grow nice and be healthy. Helpful tips on reducing weeds in your garden:

  • Cover the soil along rows and between plants with mulch.
  • Make sure to keep all weeds away from young plants.
  • Plant your plants closely together to leave less room for weed growth.
  • Have soil weed-free before planting.
  • Make sure you do not let any of the weeds go to seed.
  • Keep the edges of your yard mowed short to lessen the invasion of weeds onto your property and into your garden.

NATIONAL GARDEN MEDITATION DAY

National Garden Meditation Day, annually on May 3rd, encourages everyone to take time for one’s self and relax.

Working in the garden, tending to the plants and flowers, or resting quietly on a bench on a beautiful day in the garden are forms of meditation. Both can be restorative to the soul and a refreshing way to be out in nature.

Meditation and gardening offer many benefits. When you couple it with the outdoor peace of a garden, you also get to enjoy the benefits nature has to offer.

  • Fresh air – Immediately we benefit from being in the fresh air.
  • Audio therapy – Natural sounds of the birds, a water fountain, or a breeze through the trees offer a reprisal from the everyday chaos of the television, radio, and other appliances indoors.
  • Eases pain – The physical activity of gardening helps to loosen joints and stretch muscles. However, meditation alone also helps to reduce pain.
  • Vitamin D – A natural dose (though limited) dose of the sun’s bounty keeps us healthy and strong. Do wear sunblock or protective wear to reduce your risk of overexposure.
  • Improve sleep – Rest better by communing with nature. Whether you spend time pulling weeds or focusing your thoughts among the flowers, sleep will come more easily.
  • Ease anxiety – Worries begin to evaporate as our muscles relax, and we take deeper slower breaths. The exercise of gardening also allows us to forget about our worldly concerns for a while.

NATIONAL EARTH DAY HISTORY

In 1969, the concept of Earth Day was established at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. On March 21, 1970, a sanctioned Proclamation was signed by Secretary-General U Thant at the United Nations. A month later, on April 22, 1970, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day. While National Earth Day is not considered a national holiday we encourage you to learn more.

Environmentalists held rallies in large cities around the country. The observance became a global event in 1990 and hasn’t stopped since.

Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning April 2024

Spring cleaning: it’s a tradition that feels as old as time itself, yet remains as relevant today as ever. As the days lengthen and the temperature warms, there’s something about the onset of spring that instinctively prompts us to open the windows, let in the fresh air, and undertake a thorough cleaning of our homes. This annual ritual, steeped in history and varying cultures, is not just about maintaining a clean environment; it’s a symbolic gesture towards renewal, rejuvenation, and starting anew.

The concept of spring cleaning can be traced back to several origins, from the Iranian Norouz, the Persian New Year, which falls on the first day of spring, to the Jewish tradition of cleaning the house in preparation for Passover. No matter its origins, the core idea remains the same: clearing out the old to make way for the new. In a modern context, this means decluttering, deep-cleaning, and organizing our living spaces to usher in the season of growth and renewal.

Why is spring cleaning so important? Firstly, it’s a practical necessity. After months of being shut indoors with windows sealed against the cold, our homes are likely to have accumulated dust, grime, and clutter. A thorough cleaning helps remove allergens, improve air quality, and simply make our living spaces more pleasant and hygienic. But beyond the practicalities, spring cleaning holds psychological benefits. It can be incredibly satisfying and mentally refreshing to clear out clutter, organize our belongings, and make our spaces feel fresh and new. It’s an act that can signal a fresh start, not just for our homes, but for ourselves as well.

So, how can we tackle spring cleaning in an effective and manageable way? Here are a few tips:

1. **Make a Plan:** Start with a checklist of all the tasks you want to accomplish. Breaking the process down into smaller, more manageable tasks can make the project feel less daunting.

2. **Declutter First:** Before you start cleaning, declutter. It’s easier to clean spaces that aren’t filled with unused or unnecessary items. Plus, decluttering can have its own therapeutic effects.

3. **Room by Room:** Tackle your cleaning room by room. This strategy ensures that you’re thorough and allows you to see progress, which can be motivating.

4. **Natural Cleaners:** Consider using eco-friendly cleaning products. They’re better for the environment and often just as effective as chemical-based cleaners.

5. **Don’t Forget the Outdoors:** Spring cleaning isn’t just for the interior of your home. Take some time to clean up your outdoor spaces as well.

As you embark on your spring cleaning journey, remember that it’s not just about the physical act of cleaning. It’s about creating a space that reflects and supports your wellbeing, a home that serves as a sanctuary as the world blooms anew. Happy cleaning!

NATIONAL GARDEN MONTH

During National Garden Month in April, gather up your tools. You have permission to get dirty!

Like any other gardener, you’ve spent the last few months paging through catalogs dreaming and planning the next big adventure.  The time has come.  Whether you dream in color, spice or flavor, the all-important pleasure is getting to place those seeds or plants in the ground and nurture them along their way.

As gardeners know, we learn from each other and find joy in improving our skills. Working the soil and seeing the result of our labor is more than just satisfying. Being able to hand the seeds of life to another generation brings joy beyond measure.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Tips for New Gardeners
  • Start small – Gardening can be an investment. Start with container gardening if you want to give it a whirl. Tomatoes and peppers will provide color and produce to eat.
  • Herbs such as basil, sage, and rosemary can also be brought in during the winter if planted in a container. If kept in a sunny window and watered when they are dry, they should survive the winter. Trim and use in your cooking.
  • Soil – Use the right soil for the plant. Depending on the plant, you may need to check with the garden center or extension service to determine if you have the right soil to grow a particular plant or tree.  Areas with clay soils do not drain well and your plants will have wet roots in rainy weather.  Sandy soils drain easily, but in a drought, the plant will require more water unless the plant is drought resistant.
  • Potted Plants – Anything in a container, such as a clay, plastic or resin pot will require more watering than a plant that has been placed in the earth. Depending on the daily temperature, these plants will likely need to be watered at least twice a day.
  • Fertilizer – Not all fertilizer is the same. Read labels and use the correct fertilizer for the type of plant.
  • Mulch – Mulching bedded plants helps protect from weeds and keeps from water loss.
  • Raised beds – Helps save on weeding and back-breaking work.

Sharpen your tools. Collect your seeds. Prepare your beds. It’s time to plant! Use #NationalGardenMonth to share on social media.
