ROMANCE AWARENESS MONTH

February isn’t the only romantic month on the calendar.  Check your relationship’s pulse during Romance Awareness in August. If it needs a jump start, there are lots of ways to put some spark back into the relationship.

Add excitement by planning the unexpected. Surprise your significant other with a date night with only a few clues as to the destination. None of it needs to be expensive or elaborate, but making an effort to make the evening fun, spontaneous and memorable will be worthwhile. Maybe it’s a note clipped to a single flower saying you’ll pick her up at 7 PM and to wear sandals. It ends up with a picnic on the beach; or it could be a text to him that you’re in the mood for takeout, be ready in an hour – a three-hour road trip later and you’re at the nearest drive-in theater eating hot wings under the stars.

The simple things mean so much more than elaborate gifts. A wrapped mint slipped into a pocket with an encouraging message on the day of big presentation sends waves of support and love when it’s needed most. Sharing our successes with those we love is another way of enhancing the romance. Toast each other’s success and bask in the glow.

Spend quiet time with each other. Read books, do chores, sleep. Just be. Sometimes, just being together in the same room generates energy that may have been missing.

Cultivate activities as a couple you enjoy doing together. Whether you enjoy games, biking, sports, antiquing, travel, music or haven’t discovered your interest yet, get out there and explore.

National Tea Day

There isn’t anything more traditionally English than evening tea, which makes Public Tea Day, April 21, a stunningly well known event in the country. This affection for tea goes back hundreds of years and this affection appears to just get more grounded with time! Public Tea Day’s motto is “Blend More. Accomplish More.” The vision is to move unique minutes with tea. Working with an assortment of accomplice organizations consistently, they want to bring tea consumers, tea servers and the whole tea industry together. Thus, snatch your cuppa and get comfortable for a perused on the most proficient method to commend this really splendid occasion.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL TEA DAY

There’s more to National Tea Day than just a celebration. It’s a movement that offers chances for next generations of tea enthusiasts to learn about and value the tea industry. April 21 was selected as the founding date of the organization in 2016 because it is also Queen Elizabeth’s birthday! Is there a more British day than this one?

As is widely known, tea originated in China, but Catherine of Braganza, a Portuguese woman, is credited with popularizing the beverage in England. Charles II and Catherine were married in 1662. Several boxes of loose leaf tea were part of her dowry, which she continued to consume daily in the United Kingdom. The practice of drinking tea was rapidly embraced by the royal court, even among the nobility.

Though the purpose of National Tea Day is to encourage people worldwide to sip tea more frequently and all year round, the iconic British afternoon tea comes to mind first. “Tea” can refer to a meal or a beverage. In the late 1840s, Anna Russell, the Duchess of Bedford, enjoyed afternoon tea with her friends as a way to ease her hunger between the two daily meals at the time.

Around the world, tea comes in a variety of ways. While South Asian nations frequently produce “chai”—a blend of spices cooked in milk and water—green tea is more common in China and Japan. Even a pink tea, referred to as “Kashmiri tea,” is offered at weddings in various parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan’s Himalayan highlands in the winter. The traditional British cup of tea is a blend of black tea, boiled water, and a small amount of milk.

National Tea Day celebrates the world’s second favorite drink — only to water — so heavily stemmed in everyday culture so each of us can learn and revel in its drinking experience!

“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”

Henry James, author and nominee for a Nobel Prize in Literature

NATIONAL TEA DAY FAQS

Do British people drink tea all day?

More than 300 years after Catherine’s introduction, it’s estimated that the British now drink about 165 million cups of tea every day.

Why do the British put milk in tea?

During the 17th and 18th centuries, milk was added to cool the liquid and stop cups from cracking as tea used to be served in delicate china cups.

What time do British have tea?

Traditionally, for some people still, meals are called at specific times. Breakfast is between 7:00 to 9:00 in the morning, while dinner, the main meal, is between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. Tea begins anywhere from 5:30 to 6:30 at night.

HOW TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL TEA DAY

  1. Host or join an afternoon teaShare your love and knowledge of tea with friends, especially those who have not been exposed to the vast variety of tea and its rich culture. You could even join National Tea Day’s monthly #VirtualParTea.
  2. Attend the FestivalThe founders of National Tea Day hold an annual “Fes-Tea-Val”, bringing the best of the tea industry under one umbrella. The popular gathering showcases the latest brews, the master mixologists of “experTeas”, and the newest tea making and tea serving gadgets.
  3. Learn tea etiquetteJust in case you are ever invited to afternoon tea with the Queen of England, you want to be prepared. Steeped in tradition, drinking tea comes with its own set of rules. Don’t worry, we’ve started with a few tips for you below.

5 TEA ETIQUETTE TIDBITS

  1. Pouring the teaThe host should pour everyone’s tea and the teapot should remain on the table with the spout facing the person who poured.
  2. To dunk or not to dunkUnless situated in an informal setting, it is inappropriate to dunk a biscuit into tea.
  3. Food presentationA tiered cake stand should be used when food is served with tea. The top tier is usually filled with scones, the middle for sandwiches and the bottom comprises sweets, pastries, and desserts. Don’t forget the order of eating, which is sandwiches, scones, and finally, sweets.
  4. Mind the napkinNapkins are placed to the left of the plate with the folded edge on the left and open edge closest to the plate. Place a napkin back to the left of the plate — never on the chair — when momentarily leaving the table.
  5. How to stir teaStarting from the 12 o’clock position in the cup, slowly fold the tea with a spoon from 12 to 6, back and forth about 2 to 3 times. The spoon should be resting on the saucer to the right of the cup when it is not being used.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL TEA DAY

  1. The choices are endlessThe blends of teas are endless, but they usually fall into main types such as black, green and white, all coming from the same plant. Differences in these teas are created by how the leaf is processed, as well as the conditions and geography of where the plant is grown. Additionally, there is also herbal tea which is, basically, infusions of other types of plants such as peppermint or chamomile. Setting out to try these many tea offerings is far from boring!
  2. Humans are social beingsTea is as much of a culture, or an experience, as it is a drink. The best way to enjoy tea is in a gathering of friends and family which is one of the reasons for its popularity and our love affair with it.
  3. Tea offers tons of health benefitsBlack and green tea is found to be heart healthy. This is because tea can reduce bad cholesterol levels and improves blood vessel function. Not only this, the popular drink is hydrating since 90% of tea is water. It also contains antioxidants and vitamin H which strengthens the immune system!

National Cocktail Day

NATIONAL COCKTAIL DAY - March 24
#NationalCocktailDay

Celebrate all your favorite cocktails on March 24th. National Cocktail Day ushers in all the best ways to savor a beverage at the end of a long workday. Whether you like a fruity drink, blended or on the rocks, this day is for you. Mocktail, virgin, or the real thing, celebrate the lemon, lime, bitters, liquors, and liqueurs that make your favorite beverages the best in your bartender book.

It’s probably no surprise that nearly every month on the calendar celebrates a cocktail. The only exception is April, and since it’s National Alcohol Awareness Month, it makes sense to take that month off.

A cocktail contains a spirit or a mix of spirits. While a beer is not considered a cocktail, there are beer cocktails where beer is added to a distilled ingredient. The same applies to wine.

The other months pay homage to histories, ingredients, and the makers of some legendary cocktails. January begins the year dedicating a day to the Bloody Mary, and there’s also a day for her Canadian counterpart, the Bloody Caesar, in May. January also devotes an entire week to Mocktails. In February, you can celebrate the Margarita and Kahlua. March brings us International Whisk(e)y Day, among others. Skipping back to May, you can imbibe in both Palomas and Mimosas for your celebrations.

June & July

June and July compete for the most cocktail-related days. From Martinis and Bourbon in June to Pina Coladas and Daiquiris in July, the two months cover the spectrum. There are even a few bottles of wine in between. Not only do they celebrate specific cocktails but they also celebrate the places we enjoy them. National Dive Bar Day in July invites us to celebrate the places that serve our favorite cocktails, even if it’s an ice-cold beer.

The rest of the year covers all our chilled and heated cocktails. By December, we readily reminisce National Repeal Day and the Bartenders who keep that era and the skills alive.

We have only skimmed the surface of the cocktails celebrated on the calendar, so National Cocktail Day allows you to celebrate whichever one you like!

  • Attend a cocktail tasting party. You will learn more about how and why ingredients are combined the way they are.
  • Visit your local bookstore and pick up a cocktail or bar book. Follow the recipes and read about the histories these bartenders share. We recommend The Essential Bar Book by Jennifer Fielder, The Art and Science of The Perfect Cocktail by Janice Dreese, and Craft Cocktails at Home: Offbeat Techniques, Contemporary Crowd-Pleasers, and Classics Hacked with Science by Kevin Liu.
  • Visit your local bar and pick your bartender’s brain. Some like to share their techniques. Ask them what their favorite cocktail is. And, be sure to tip them well for their advice and service.
  • Try making a mocktail. Especially on those weeknights when work is busy, and you need to keep up. Many of them infuse nutrients many of us are lacking. Keep these recipes on hand for your friends who are designated drivers, sober for life, supporting a friend, or for any reason.
  • As always, ANY TIME we are indulging in spirits and alcohol, DON’T drink and drive. Designate a sober driver. Call a taxi, Uber, Lyft, or friend.
  • When you celebrate, share your favorites by using #NationalCocktailDay on social media.

NATIONAL DARK CHOCOLATE DAY

On February 1st, National Dark Chocolate Day reminds us to indulge a little. Many tout dark chocolate as the healthier chocolate. However, for some, it can be an acquired taste.

Also known as bittersweet chocolate, dark chocolate is different from milk chocolate. Candy makers add milk or butter to milk chocolate, giving it a creamier consistency. Dark chocolate includes no added milk or butter. Instead, the percentage of cocoa solids remaining in the chocolate determines how dark the chocolate is. The higher the ratio, the darker the chocolate. It may also have a slightly bitter taste.

Chocolate comes from the seed of the tropical Theobroma cacao tree. We have been cultivating cacao for at least three millennia, and the plant grows in Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America. Our earliest known documentation of using cacao seeds dates to around 1100 BC.

Fermentation helps develop the flavor of the cacao seeds. Otherwise, the seeds are too bitter to eat. Once fermented, the beans are dried, cleaned, and roasted. After roasting, the shell is removed to produce cacao nibs. Processors then ground the cocoa nips into cocoa mass, pure chocolate in rough form. Next, they usually liquefy the cocoa mass and mold it with or without other ingredients. At this point in the process, it is called chocolate liquor. The chocolate liquor may then be processed into two components: cocoa solids and cocoa butter.

Besides being lower in calories and fat, dark chocolate has many other health benefits. It also serves as a decadent ingredient in many desserts and sauces.

National Black Diamond Month

National Black Diamond Month is observed annually in January.

New Year, New Dreams! The New Year is a time to slow down.  The majority of people are thinking, “What can I do better this year?” What about today?  The Black Diamond Collection jewelry pieces are designed to remind us to be present, allowing us to incorporate meditation, peace and style into our daily routines.

While black diamonds are rare like thier gem grade whites they are not as rare as other diamonds of color. Diamonds of color are not imitation, simulated or created. Each natural diamond must possess specific elements to make thier color. Many are famous, The Hope Diamond is actually blue. Other colors include Champagne, Red, Green, Pink, and Yellow.

Diamonds are always a girls best friend, no matter their color. The same 4 C’s are just as important these colorful gems as they are in white diamonds. Many colors have a ranking system for color intensity as well.

History

Carole Shoshana, founder of the Black Diamond Collection, trained with a Grand Master of Feng Shui in Hong Kong for 16 years, and became a Grand Master herself upon his passing. The “Black Diamond Collection” was inspired by Carole’s spiritual journey through the sacred images of nature depicted in the philosophy of Shan Shui art.  As an art form, Shan Shui evokes a sanctuary of peace, patience and harmony.  Based on the teachings of the I Ching, Shan Shui captures the emotion and atmosphere of the mountains and waters, and Carole wanted to design a line of jewelry that also depicts the beauty she found in her personal journeys in the Far East. The black diamonds represent the reflecting stones she saw in the mountain streams as she walked with her Master and learned valuable lessons.

The Black Diamond Collection emerged from something called cracked ice, which is about finding breath and energy.  Each part of the collection is symbolic of the wearer. The jewelry pieces are considered “portable energizers,” meaning that they provide support for wearers.

“My jewelry was inspired and designed to evoke and maintain those same meditative qualities in whomever wears it, to follow them throughout their day and to remind them of their dreams and desires,” says Carole. “Like all of my designs, every piece in my Black Diamond Collection works like a life compass, keeping the wearer on course toward personal happiness.”
