NATIONAL PINA COLADA DAY

July 10th recognizes a sweet, rum-based cocktail on National Pina Colada Day. Along with rum, a Pina Colada includes cream of coconut and pineapple juice and is usually served blended or shaken with ice.

Pina Colada means ‘strained pineapple,’ a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice used in the drink.

While pineapple has been a part of the distillation history of rum, coconut didn’t show up until later. The first written reference to a pina colada was in 1922. However, two different claims to the invention of the pina colada in 1952 come from San Juan. Neither wavers from their story.

No matter who created the first creamy, sweet rum drink, it is forever infused with the ocean and beaches. The cocktail’s bright flavor suggests sunshine and vacation. Coconut alone makes us think of suntans while the pineapple’s freshness delivers a sparkling note of summer breezes.

National Watermelon Month

In the sweltering heat of July, which is also National Watermelon Month, nothing tastes as great as a big cold bowl of watermelon. It has a unique taste and scent that refreshes you from the inside out. Consisting of 92% water, eating a watermelon hydrates you thoroughly. It also helps restore essential electrolytes in your body. During the heat of July, it is believed to be one way to relieve the pain of muscle cramps. Many cultures boil and cook the rind to make scrumptious savory salads and dishes.

5 FACTS ABOUT WATERMELON THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND

  1. Watermelons are considered a fruit and vegetableWhile it is true that watermelons are created using the pollination method that all fruits go through, many gardeners also consider watermelons as vegetables because they are part of the botanical family of gourds.
  2. Watermelons have 1,200 varietiesWatermelons come in over 1,200 varieties, and each is divided into four categories: seeded, seedless, yellow/orange, and icebox.
  3. The heaviest watermelonChris Kent of Tennessee holds the world record for growing the heaviest watermelon, which weighed around 350.5 pounds.
  4. Seedless watermelons are naturalContrary to popular belief, seedless watermelons occur naturally due to years of evolution.
  5. Watermelon is actually a berryThe watermelon is actually a type of berry called pepo, and this variety has a harder outer rind with a softer inner flesh.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL WATERMELON MONTH

National Watermelon Month came into existence in 2007 when a resolution was submitted by the senate to the U.S. Congress. The resolution was accepted, and July was designated as the official Watermelon Month. The aim was to raise production and sales of the fruit all over the country. Today, watermelon is a crucial agricultural sector in America as it is produced in 49 states, and is sold and consumed in 50 states. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, in 2006 alone, the U.S. produced a whopping 4,200,000,000 pounds of watermelon! Now, that is a lot of watermelons. The National Watermelon Association, which is a membership trade, is another organization that is dedicated to creating positive changes and growth in the industry. It has chapters all over America and Canada.

Given its track record on sales and production, we know that watermelon is extremely popular among the masses, but did you know that it has gone through extreme evolution to come to the stage it is in today? That’s right, earlier records show that watermelons from the ancient era were not as fleshy or as red as the watermelons today. It was through seasoned farmers’ efforts that watermelons started changing.

If we were to start at a particular point, the earliest records show that watermelon may have originated in ancient Egypt in 2000 B.C. In fact, some watermelon seeds were also found in King Tut’s tomb. Eventually, watermelon found its way to the Middle East and the rest of Asia. Trading routes and growing civilizations and globalization led to watermelon being taken to China and India during the 7th century. It would take another 10 centuries for watermelon to reach North-, South-, and Central America. The watermelon fruit has had quite a journey all over the planet.

Turkey Bacon Wrap

16 oz Spinach Artichoke dip

1 small red bell pepper (cut into small strips)

1 small bag tri-color slaw mix (I got my stuff at Walmart so we just had to pick it up).

1 pkg bacon

1 8oz pkg cream cheese

1 pkg fresh chives (I minced mine)

1 16 oz pkg extra sharp cheddar cheese

1 32oz pkg lean turkey breast sliced

1 10 CT pkg tortillas (we had 3 leftover from an open pkg that o used first)

Place about 1 1/2 Tbsp spinach Artichoke dip and smooth over totilla. We discovered they are easier to roll if you place ingredients to one side.

Next sprinkle with 1/8 cup shredded tricolor mix.

Add 3 to 4 slices of turkey (o use deli thin slices).

Place 3 or 4 slices of red bell pepper, add cream cheese. (I used 1/8th thick slices from the boxed pkg).

Sprinkle with fresh chopped chives. Add handful of extra sharp shredded cheese then place single cooked slice of bacon.

Roll tortilla like a burrito tucking in the ends.

They are even better if made a little ahead and allowed to sit in refrigerator for 45 minutes to an hour. The flavors meld making them taste even better. We served ours with fresh veggie platter with leftover Spinach dip. We added fries for the kids involved but you can just as easily add veggie tots instead.

We feed a mixed dietary family. These are a great easy meal. Easy and cool on the taste buds as the thermometer outside continues to climb.

NATIONAL FLIP FLOP DAY

Each year on the Wednesday after Memorial Day, National Flip Flop Day encourages us to wear our favorite flip flops and show them off!

Thong style sandals are by no means new to footwear. They’ve been around for thousands of years. However, the term “flip flop” has applied to flat-soled sandals with straps between the first and second toes and across the top of the foot since the 1960s. The term also describes someone who changes their mind or an electronic component.

This day strictly recognizes the footwear that makes a flip-flopping sound as we walk, slapping the back of our feet as we head to the beach or make way for the pool. They come in all shades and colors, beaded, bejeweled, and bedazzled. Some are made of leather and cork.

The lightweight footwear is designed to protect our tender feet from the hot ground and sand. They’re also easy to remove and put on quickly. Many flip flops go from the beach to semi-formal dining in an instant, too!

NATIONAL FLIP FLOP DAY HISTORY HISTORY

In 2007, Tropical Smoothie Cafe created National Flip Flop Day to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Every year on this date, customers who come into participating Cafes across the nation wearing flip-flops receive a free Jetty Punch Smoothie. Tropical Smoothie then gives proceeds of a $1 paper flip flop from customers to send ill children and their families to Camp Sunshine.

Camp Sunshine is based in Casco, Maine, whose mission focuses solely on addressing the effects of a life-threatening illness on every member of the immediate family — the child, the parents, and the siblings. This year-round program is free of charge to families.

In 2015, $1 million was raised byTropical Smoothie Cafe for Camp Sunshine. The total amount raised since the beginning in 2007 is over $3.7 million, making National Flip Flop Day a successful fundraiser for Camp Sunshine.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL FLIP FLOP DAY

Flip Flop Day is the perfect time to go shopping for a new pair of flip flops. While you’re out and about, get a manicure, so you can show off your toes in your flip flops. Wear your favorite flip flops and use #NationalFlipFlopDay to share on social media.
