NATIONAL ICED TEA DAY

National Iced Tea Day is observed annually on June 10th.  This day is set aside to celebrate one of summer’s favorite drinks.  Whether it is sweetened or unsweetened, with or without lemon, it is loved by many and enjoyed by the glass full all summer long.

In Northwest Florida we are a part of “The South” so some “Southern ” traditions do carry on to this day. We serve sweet tea all summer long. We make it by the gallon at least. Most of us have both a dispenser and pitcher devoted to it. We still use tall iced tea glasses too. If you are like most of us it’s your favorite refreshment. You can catch us enjoying it as we watch the world go by our porch. Somtimes history gives us a treat on a hot summer’s day.

Iced tea can be found in many flavors including lemon, peach, raspberry, lime, passions fruit, strawberry and cherry. If you have a hard time choosing try a glass of halves. Half lemonade, half tea. I like the peach and have you tried hibiscus berry? Try adding fresh fruit or vegetables as an infusion or garnish. Peaches, berries, watermelon, lemon, or even some cucumber slices.

An alternative to carbonated soft drinks and quite popular in the United States, iced tea makes up about 85% of all tea consumed.  It can be readily found in restaurants, convenience stores, vending machines, grocery stores and self-serve soda fountains.

Recipes for iced tea have been found dating back to the 1870s.  The Buckeye Cookbook, published in 1876 and Housekeeping in Old Virginia, published in 1877 both contain iced tea recipes.  It is believed, however, that iced tea started to appear in the United States in the 1860′s and became widespread in the 1870s where it was found offered on hotel menus and was on sale at railroad stations.  The popularity of refreshing iced tea drink grew rapidly after it was introduced at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis

Green tea has been suggested to be used for a variety of positive health benefits. Any alternative like tea is better for your body than soft drinks.

  • Reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Some forms of cancer
  • Oral health
  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Weight control
  • Antibacterial and antiviral activity
  • Protection from solar ultraviolet light
  • Anti-fibrotic properties
  • Neuroprotective power

Since June is National Iced Tea Month you can definitely sip your way through this holiday.  We won’t tell if you started in May any continue through August either.

National Iced Tea Month

As the temperature heats up in June, it’s a perfect time to celebrate National Iced Tea Month!

Iced Tea Day is June 10! Try incorporating some fresh fruits or vegetables since it’s thier Month too. Besides iced tea goes well with any kind of salad.

Brewing the ideal pitcher of iced tea is a matter of taste. Mine is the Tetley Brand. Lots of restaurants brew Lipton. Depending on your taste, you may prefer sun tea, sweet tea or unsweetened tea. Perhaps your palate leans more toward a fruitier tea or a stronger type of tea. As long as it’s iced, June is the month your tea is celebrated.

Iced tea was made as early as the 1870s, but an English merchant by the name of Richard Belchynden brought the beverage to popularity. During the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis temperatures began to soar. Belchynden crossed the Atlantic to sell black tea steeped hot and served to the American public. Under the conditions, fairgoers were interested in cooler beverages. Belchynden needed to switch strategies, or he would have no sales. By brewing a stronger tea and pouring it over ice, the merchant created a new product to sell.
