NATIONAL BANANA SPLIT DAY

National Banana Split Day recognizes the sweet ice cream treat served with a banana, whipped cream, and various toppings. Get yours on August 25th!

How to Make a Banana Split

Originally served in drug stores, soda fountains and ice cream parlors, the banana split is traditionally served in a long dish called a boat. To make a banana split, cut the banana lengthwise and place it in the dish. Then add scoops of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream between the slices of banana. Each scoop gets a topping; add crushed pineapple to the strawberry, drizzle chocolate syrup over the vanilla, and add strawberry topping to the chocolate. Next, sprinkle with crushed nuts. Finally, garnish with whipped cream and maraschino cherries.

The Inventor

A 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist at Tassel’s Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania created the first banana split in 1904.  David Evans Strickler enjoyed inventing sundaes at the store’s soda fountain. For only 10 cents, Strickler sold his first “banana-based triple ice cream sundae,” double the cost of all the other sundaes.

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE PUDDING DAY

This food holiday National Chocolate Pudding Day is observed each year on June 26th.  Chocolate pudding has been loved by children and adults for many years.  Usually eaten as a snack or dessert, chocolate pudding is also used as a filling for chocolate creme pie.

Historically, chocolate pudding is a variation of chocolate custard, using starch as a thickener instead of eggs.  The 1903 edition of Mary Harris Frazer’s Kentucky Receipt Book and the 1918 edition of Fannie Farmer’s Boston Cooking School Cook Book both have recipes for the earlier version, using both eggs and flour.

  • In 1934, General Foods (Jello) introduced chocolate pudding mix as “Walter Baker’s Dessert.”
  • In 1936, it was renamed “Pickle’s Pudding.”

Chocolate pudding is usually made with milk and sugar, flavored with chocolate and vanilla then thickened with flour or cornstarch.  Some recipes do use eggs when making the pudding.

Chocolate pudding can be purchased ready-made and sold in grocery stores, convenience stores and gas stations.  The popular brands include Jell-O by the Kraft Foods Corporation and Snack Pack by Hunt’s.

NATIONAL APPLESAUCE CAKE DAY

National Applesauce Cake Day is observed annually on June 6th.  This food holiday is a day to enjoy a delicious piece (or two) of the moist and tasty applesauce cake.

In any cake recipe, applesauce may be substituted for the butter or oil for a healthier alternative.   It is also said that one-half cup of applesauce may be substituted for one egg in some baking recipes for those who have egg allergies.

Jen’s Tres Leche Cake

Slice of creamy cake with white chocolate curl and raspberry on plate, coffee cup nearby

The Tres Leches cake, or “three milks” cake, is a beloved Latin American dessert known for its uniquely moist, cloud-like texture. White cake that is thoroughly soaked in a sweet, silky blend of three distinct milks—typically evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and heavy cream. After being bathed in this rich mixture, the cake is chilled to allow the flavors to meld, then finished with a fluffy whipped cream. Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon. The result is a melt-in-your-mouth dessert that strikes a perfect balance between creamy and airy.

Ingredients

1 Yellow or White cake mix ( I usually use a Duncan Hines)

1 8 oz can sweetened condensed milk

1 can evaporated milk

1 cup heavy cream

1 Large tub whipped topping

Ground cinnamon to decorate

Directions

Assemble cake as directed.

Pour into oven safe cake pan.  I like an 9 x 13 for this.

Bake cake as directed.

Cool completely

Make milk mixture by combining condensed milk, evaporated milk and heavy cream in large bowl with wire wisk.

Once cake is completely cooled use a wooden dowl or I use wooden spoon handle to poke 4 sets of 4 offset wholes in cake top. As show.

Slowly pour milk mixture over back of spoon or small plate so no craters are formed on cake top.

Cover and refrigerate 1 – 2 hours for flavors to meld.

Smooth layer of whipped topping over entire top of cake use as much as desired.  Sprinkle with light dusting of cinnamon.  Serve cold and enjoy.

Enjoy this moist, delicious cake any time.  I even made it for my husbands birthday cake. Just be careful with candles.
