The Allure of August’s Birthstone: Peridot

August’s birthstone, peridot, captivates with its vibrant green hues and rich history, embodying a romanticism that resonates through the ages. Known for its unique olive to lime shades, peridot is one of the few gemstones that occurs in only one color, albeit in varying intensities. This striking gem has been cherished since ancient times, often associated with light and clarity, giving it a celestial quality that enchants lovers and collectors alike. The romantic essence of peridot is not just in its color but also in the myriad of meanings and legends that surround it, making it a popular choice for romantic gifts.

In ancient civilizations, peridot was often referred to as the “gem of the sun.” The Egyptians believed it symbolized the sun’s light, providing protection and strength. They adorned their jewelry with this gem, associating it with the goddess of fertility, Isis. This connection to divine power and protection has led many to regard peridot as a stone that brings harmony and balance to relationships. The romantic symbolism of peridot extends beyond its historical significance; it is often seen as a stone of love, believed to inspire feelings of affection and compassion in romantic partnerships.

The symbolism of peridot is further enhanced by its connections to renewal and growth. The stone is said to bring abundance and prosperity to its wearer, making it an appropriate gift for anniversaries and celebrations of love. Its vibrant green hue is reminiscent of lush landscapes and new beginnings, allowing lovers to reflect on the growth of their relationships. This association with renewal makes peridot a fitting stone for couples looking to reinvigorate their bond, inviting fresh energy into their lives together.

In addition to its romantic symbolism, peridot is also linked to emotional healing. It is believed to dispel negative energy and promote positivity, making it a powerful talisman for relationships. Many couples choose peridot not only for its beauty but also for its reputed ability to enhance emotional well-being. This dual nature—being both a beautiful adornment and a source of emotional strength—positions peridot as an ideal gemstone for those navigating the complexities of love.

As we embrace the beauty of peridot, it becomes clear that this august birthstone is more than just a gem; it is a vibrant symbol of love, renewal, and protection. Whether given as a gift or worn as a personal talisman, peridot captures the essence of romanticism, making it a timeless choice for those wishing to celebrate their love. Its rich history and multifaceted symbolism ensure that it will remain a cherished stone for generations to come, echoing the enduring nature of love itself.

NATIONAL LIPSTICK DAY

National Lipstick Day on July 29th encourages you to wear your best color. For some, lipstick is the only makeup requirement. Whether sheer and light, dark or bright, July 29th calls for all kinds of lipstick.

Throughout the ages, controversy surrounded lipstick. British Parliament banned it in 1770 calling it a devilish attempt to trick men into marriage. In some circles, lipstick was associated with witchcraft. Occasionally, lipstick contained poisonous materials.

It is said Sarah Bernhardt created a scandal by applying “lip rouge” in public. Surprisingly, George Washington supposedly wore lipstick. While Queen Victoria considered wearing lipstick impolite, one of her statesmen had a different opinion. During World War II, Winston Churchill thought the lip color boosted morale in an excellent way.

Of course, versatility is lipstick’s brand. It changes with a mood or with the scenery. Whether lipstick defines your attitude or channels your inner spirit, wear it on July 29th. No matter your style, lipstick adds a subtle accent or a bold statement. Let your lips speak. However, punctuate it with your lipstick.

August Birthstone Peridot

Peridot, the birthstone for August, is a gem that has captivated admirers for centuries with its vibrant green hue. Known for its brilliant, lime-green color, peridot is a gemstone that symbolizes strength and promise. Unlike other gems, peridot is unique in that it is one of the few gemstones that come in only one color, albeit in varying shades. Its color can range from a yellowish-green to a deeper olive green, with the finest specimens displaying a rich, intense green with just a hint of gold.

The allure of peridot goes back thousands of years, with its origins deeply rooted in ancient history. The earliest known source of peridot is the small volcanic island of Zabargad (St. John) in the Red Sea, which has been mined for over 3,500 years. Ancient Egyptians referred to peridot as the “gem of the sun” due to its radiant glow, which they believed had the power to ward off evil spirits. Legend has it that Cleopatra’s famous emerald collection may have actually been peridot, a testament to the stone’s historical importance and timeless beauty.

Peridot has been prized since the earliest civilizations for its claimed protective powers to drive away fears and nightmares, according to superstitions. It is believed by some superstitious people to carry the gift of “inner radiance”, sharpening the mind and opening it to new levels of awareness and growth, helping one to recognize and realize one’s destiny and spiritual purpose. There is no scientific evidence for such claims.

Peridot is sometimes mistaken for emeralds and other green gems.  Notable gemologist George Frederick Kunz discussed the confusion between emeralds and peridot in many church treasures, notably the “Three Magi” treasure in the Dom of Cologne, Germany.

There are several types of symbolism associated with the gemstone. Peridot symbolizes love, truth, faithfulness and loyalty. The energies from the gemstone can also suppress ego and jealousy. Today this gem is still prized for its beautiful yellowish-green hues and long history.

Peridot’s appeal extends beyond its aesthetic qualities; it is also believed to possess various metaphysical properties. In the realm of crystal healing, peridot is thought to bring harmony and healing to relationships, reduce stress, and increase confidence and assertiveness. Additionally, it is said to have protective qualities, shielding the wearer from negative energies and fostering a sense of calm and well-being. This makes peridot not only a beautiful gemstone to wear but also a meaningful one for those who value its supposed spiritual benefits.

Peridot is also known as the “money stone” because its green color is associated with money, and it’s said to bring financial success and help with decision-making. It’s also the birthstone for August, and is a popular gift for people celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary.

Modern sources of peridot include the United States, particularly in Arizona, as well as in China, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Tanzania. These regions produce peridot stones that are highly sought after for their vibrant color and clarity. Whether set in a simple piece of jewelry or a more elaborate design, peridot continues to enchant and inspire, making it a cherished gem for those born in August and gem enthusiasts alike. Its enduring beauty and rich history ensure that peridot will remain a beloved gemstone for generations to come.
