GLOBAL SLEEP UNDER THE STARS NIGHT

August 8th is Global Sleep Under the Stars Night.

Whether it’s in the backcountry or your own backyard, one of the best ways to experience the beauty of the outdoors is to spend a night under the stars. Gazing up at the night sky gives us a sense of peace and, at the same time, an overwhelming sense of awe.

GLOBAL SLEEP UNDER THE STARS DAY HISTORY

Founded in 2020, Global Sleep Under The Stars is a unique way to encourage the world to experience the beauty of the outdoors under the same night sky, and also to celebrate the 100 Year Anniversary of the outdoor brand, Eddie Bauer – who has been inspiring and enabling people to live their adventure since 1920.

HOW TO OBSERVE #SleepUnderTheStarsNight

Let’s do this! Make a day of it on August 8th. Set up camp in your backyard, pitch a tent on the patio, bring blankets to the rooftop, or lay your sleeping bags out on the back deck and turn your gaze upward.

The celebration lands in the middle of the Perseid meteor showers! So, if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, look northeast for the best view and count the shooting stars as you fall into a peaceful sleep. Make it an annual tradition and share your experiences using #SleepUnderTheStarsNight or #EBUnderTheStars on social media.

National Camera Day

Everything comes into focus on June 29th each year when we recognize National Camera Day. The day commemorates photographs, the camera, and their invention. A camera is an irreplaceable tool used to record and replicate memories, events, and people/places. Before the invention of the camera, the only resource to document a vision was a painting. Capturing an image of a person or place in a drawing took time and skill. Very few people can perfectly draw the likeness of someone, let alone capture the essence of an event.

The power of a camera provided many with a simple, inexpensive, and fast solution. George Eastman, also known as “The Father of Photography,” brought the camera to the masses. While he did not invent the camera, he did develop many additions improving the use, ease, and production of the camera. His developments made the camera widely available to homes around the world.

While the first cameras were large and bulky, each later design evolved until some cameras were as small as a pen. Today’s digital cameras have many features and variations, making them appealing to people of all ages for personal and professional use. The portable and easy-to-use features not only allow us to take photos quickly, but we can also edit them on the fly. Smartphones with built-in cameras include features that allow us to share photos instantly, too.

Taking photos has become so easy. According to Business Insider, in 2017, we took over 1.2 trillion digital photos! From a large boxy camera to one that fits in our pocket, cameras have come a long way.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL CAMERA DAY

Whether photography is a hobby or your profession, celebrate the day by taking photos. Snap a picture of something or someone you enjoy and cherish the memory. But taking pictures isn’t the only way to celebrate.

  • Take a photography class.
  • Teach someone how to take outstanding photos.
  • Expand your photography skills by learning more about your camera.
  • Try a different style of photography or camera.

National Camping Month

National Camping Month in June is an excellent time to pack up your gear and experience nature.

Whether you like roughing it or prefer to have a few modern conveniences when heading out to the trail, it’s important to keep a few things in mind.

1. Make sure you have plenty of freshwater or a freshwater source.
2. Take a first aid kit and that it is stocked.
3. Pack waterproof matches.
4. Take non-perishable food such as granola bars, jerky, peanut butter, chocolate bars, and dried fruits, especially if you are not taking a cooler.
5. Pack fruits, vegetables, and meats separately and keep chilled in a cooler.
6. Include sunblock, even for cloudy days.
7. Rain gear, jackets, and blankets are necessary for cooler weather.

Around the country, there are a variety of campsites available. The more modern campsite includes showers and recreational facilities. These often include water hookups and parking pads for RVs and campers and cabins to rent as well as more primitive sites with no electrical hookups designed for tent usage.  Other parks only allow primitive camping and require everything you pack into the park to be packed out. So, seriously consider your needs if you are hiking into the park for your stay. These are not for the glampers.
