This treat for Thanksgiving will need 2 days of space in your refrigerator to infuse before serving. We prefer the jellied style for our Thanksgiving. You can use the whole berry or any recipe you prefer. I used a shallow glass dish big enough to keep the jelly whole. Using a lidded container also gave a great use of the space in my fridge as we stocked it with other treats for our Thanksgiving holiday meal. This is an adult twist on a classic so make sure you have some plain for the kids.
1/2 cup whisky
2 tsp cinnamon
2 cans jellied cranberry
DirectionsMix whisky and cinnamon together. Add whole cans of jellied cranberry careful to keep intact.
Seal in glass container with lid and refrigerate for 2 days.
Slice into 1/4 slices and serve well chilled.
Save any leftover whiskey mixture to add to hot chocolate for a unique treat that reminds you of home.
National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day on November 15 encourages us to prepare for the upcoming holidays. Get together a soap and hot water filled bucket, disinfectant, a sponge and a garbage bag. Then you will be ready for the day!
With family gathering and a large turkey waiting to be roasted, cleaning out the refrigerator makes sense. Not only will we need room before the meals, but we also need space for all of the upcoming leftovers. Many dread this job. However, it is an important task none the less.
Due to our hectic and busy lifestyles, the cleaning of the refrigerator gets neglected. hence the creation of National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. There may be a surprise or two found at the back of the shelves. Things are often pushed back as new food is put in the front and gets forgotten.
Sanitation Foundation (NSF) International found that the meat and vegetable drawers were the dirtiest spots in our kitchens – well with regards to causing disease.
However, those who clean their fridges more often tend to waste more food. There’s plenty of advice available on the frequency of fridge cleaning. Understanding food labels and the meanings behind “sell by” and “best by” dates are also important. These labels don’t necessarily mean a product has gone bad, but that the quality is best by the date on the label. However, “use by” leaves some of us wondering.

November 12 is Happy Hour Day. So, on this unofficial fun holiday take advantage of happy hours at your favorite bar, cafe or restaurant.
Happy hour is a term used to refer to a period of time during a day when establishments sell drinks and food at a discount. While traditionally offered by bars, restaurants today also hold happy hours and offer appetizers at reduced prices. Usually, a happy hour includes two drinks or two appetizers for the price of one.
Please drink responsibly and use a designated driver or service like Uber, Lyft or a taxi service now Z-trip here in Pensacola. Many countries ban happy hours in bars due to the fear that it will encourage binge drinking and alcoholism.
How to Celebrate?
Happy Happy Hour Day! Here are some ways to celebrate this fun holiday:
- Go out for happy hour with your friends and co-workers and get two of your favorite beverages for the price of one. Remember to always drink responsibly.
- Don’t drink? That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy happy hour. Many restaurants and coffee shops have happy hour prices on appetizers and hors-d’oeuvre. Enjoy these while sipping a non-alcoholic beverage.
Did You Know…
…that the happy hour began as an event in the military? It is believed that the term comes from events organized by a club called the Happy Hour Social for the United States Navy in 1913.
Enjoy the fun and be safe.
With the fall season change, we get cooler temperatures and football. We also get cold and flu season. At some point in your life, I’ll bet you’ve heard chicken soup is the popular choice when a cold or flu comes home with you. Turns out there are health benefits to this comfort food that can help you recover. I recommend making your own and stocking it in the freezer. As my husband is both diabetic and on a low salt diet, it’s easier to control the ingredients. It’s great on a just a winter evening or battling a bug. So here is my favorite recipe.AmazonBasics Enameled Cast Iron Covered Dutch Oven, 6-Quart, Blue
Homemade Chicken Soup
2-3 lbs chicken breasts or thighs
2 tsp olive oil
3 Tbsp fresh minced garlic
3 tsp grated ginger
1 medium onion diced
1 cup diced fresh carrots
1/2 cup diced celery
4 cups low sodium chicken broth
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1 tsp black pepper
Pinch of red pepper flakes if desired.
2 cups uncooked egg noodles (use low carb options here if prefer)
Optional ingredients are 1 cup mushrooms, 16 oz fresh spinach, 2 cleaned and chopped leeks, 2 tsp turmeric, and 16 oz white beans. I only add some or all if making a more hearty main dish. Stick with less if using for cold and flu.
- Cut chicken into 1/2 inch cubes. In a Dutch oven add 2 tsp olive oil and chopped chicken.
- Cook over medium-high heat until chicken is seared. (I like mine golden color for flavor).
- Add onions, garlic, and ginger. Reduce heat to medium.
- Add carrots, Italian seasoning, celery, and both black pepper and red pepper flakes if desired.
- Cook about 10 minutes stirring frequently.
- Add chicken broth. Reduce heat to low and cover.
- Simmer on low heat for about 30 – 45 minutes until carrots are tender.
- Add cooked pasta. Cover. Let simmer 10 minutes.
National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day encourages everyone to take time to organize their virtual desktop. The observance takes place on the third Monday in October. This year that day is October 21st.
Remember when your computer was new and the desktop was clean and organized? The trash file was empty. The only files on the computer were the ones the manufacturer created. No viruses. No documents. And your computer was fast, too. You were ready to create, design and program.
A clean and organized space offers fewer frustrations. Everything is in its file and you know where to find it. Archive old files. Create short cuts. This will help your computer run faster and help you find them more quickly. Pin favorite apps to the start menu.
Name photos and put them on a thumb drive. Clean out that email, too. Delete unused icons. You can do the same thing with your phone. Are there games you don’t play anymore? Eliminate them. Make sure your virus protection is up to date and run it. Make sure it runs on a regular schedule.
HOW TO OBSERVE #CleanYourVirtualDesktopDay
Neaten up your desktop by deleting unneeded items and sorting the rest into folders. Share your tips. For those who are tech-savvy, offer to help others. For example, if Grandma complains that her computer is slow, you owe it to her to help her out. Show her how to keep her computer running smooth.
