ROMANCE AWARENESS MONTH

February isn’t the only romantic month on the calendar.  Check your relationship’s pulse during Romance Awareness in August. If it needs a jump start, there are lots of ways to put some spark back into the relationship.

Add excitement by planning the unexpected. Surprise your significant other with a date night with only a few clues as to the destination. None of it needs to be expensive or elaborate, but making an effort to make the evening fun, spontaneous and memorable will be worthwhile. Maybe it’s a note clipped to a single flower saying you’ll pick her up at 7 PM and to wear sandals. It ends up with a picnic on the beach; or it could be a text to him that you’re in the mood for takeout, be ready in an hour – a three-hour road trip later and you’re at the nearest drive-in theater eating hot wings under the stars.

The simple things mean so much more than elaborate gifts. A wrapped mint slipped into a pocket with an encouraging message on the day of big presentation sends waves of support and love when it’s needed most. Sharing our successes with those we love is another way of enhancing the romance. Toast each other’s success and bask in the glow.

Spend quiet time with each other. Read books, do chores, sleep. Just be. Sometimes, just being together in the same room generates energy that may have been missing.

Cultivate activities as a couple you enjoy doing together. Whether you enjoy games, biking, sports, antiquing, travel, music or haven’t discovered your interest yet, get out there and explore.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Being aware of and adding more romance into your relationship will be a win-win for both you and your significant other. Passion has always been an essential part of relationships. Sometimes it is the little things that make a big difference, such as; holding hands, a shoulder rub, a flower, making dinner together, playing your favorite song, leaving a personal note, or watching a movie together.

Romance Awareness Month is also a great time to catch up on some reading with the wide selection of romance novels that are available.

If posting on social media use #RomanceAwarenessMonth.

NATIONAL OPEN AN UMBRELLA INDOORS DAY

National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day is observed annually on March 13th. One often wonders how superstitions are passed on from one generation to the next.  There is an old superstition about opening your umbrella indoors and that it would bring you bad luck. National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day encourages you to do just that and note if you have any bad luck.

While umbrellas have been around for over 3000 years, the origin of the superstition is strangely obscure.  There is some suggestion that ancient Egyptians thought it offended the gods to open an umbrella where there was already shade.  However, the more modern version of the superstition would suggest bad things happening as a result of poor timing or inconvenience.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Test the theory that opening an umbrella inside brings bad luck by doing so and noting any bad luck that comes your way.  You might reduce your risk of bad luck by opening the umbrella in a wide space versus a tight hallway to avoid knocking pictures off the wall.  And may we suggest giving those around you a sign of warning as well.  We wouldn’t want any eyes being poked out.  Use #OpenAnUmbrellaIndoorsDay to post on social media.

National Umbrella Month

I have a brain buster for you: What goes up when the rain comes down? I’ll give you a hint. This thing was originally created to help block the sun. Need another hint? Mary Poppins was known to carry one. Still haven’t guessed it? Well, Rihanna famously sang about this object. Think you know it now? If your answer was an umbrella, then you are correct! (Good luck getting those song lyrics out of your head now.)

March is National Umbrella Month, which I was surprised to learn seeing as the saying goes “April showers bring May flowers”… but perhaps Thomas Edward Knibb originated National Umbrella Month in March to ensure everyone was ready for the April showers. According to Abby Eyers of Associated Content, the average household is said to have an average of 3.8 umbrellas. The basic umbrella was invented over four thousand years ago. It was the Chinese who waterproofed them for rain protection, and then in the 1900s the umbrella, which we are familiar with today, was invented.

If you’re a Northwest Florida resident, or planning to visit, make sure you check out The Foo Foo Festival held in downtown Pensacola.

HOW TO OBSERVE

So, now that you know it is National Umbrella Month, let’s celebrate! Use #NationalUmbrellaMonth to post on social media… tell the world how you are choosing to honor National Umbrella Month.

You can start by going out and getting a new umbrella (be sure to buy one that makes you smile on a rainy day!) or if you discover that you have developed a collection of them through-out the years, you can donate a few to a local homeless shelter, or the nearest Goodwill. Umbrellas can also be a fun new decoration for your patio or front door. Don’t let the “Raindrops keep fallin on your head.”Whichever way you choose to celebrate, make sure you take some time to dance in the puddles, smell the fresh rain, and look for the rainbow after the storm!

NATIONAL UMBRELLA DAY

National Umbrella Day casts a little shade on February 9th. The day honors one of the world’s most useful inventions, the umbrella!

Not only does the umbrella help keep us dry from the rain, but it also protects us from the heat of the sun. Umbrellas can also be used as a fashion accessory. While the umbrella is primarily practical, they also decorate cocktails. These brightly colored paper umbrellas make for fun party favors especially when visiting sunny locations.

Umbrellas have also found their way into the art world. Their color and shape make sharp silhouettes. They also serve as the canvas for art. In movies, umbrellas play a role, too. For example, they played vital parts in both Singing in the Rain in 1952 and in Mary Poppins in 1964.

Interesting Umbrella TidBits:

The word umbrella comes from the Latin word umbra, meaning shade or shadow.  Brolly is a slang word for umbrella, often used in Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa.  Bumbershoot is a fanciful Americanism for an umbrella from the late 19th century.

The basic umbrella was invented over four thousand years ago. There is evidence of umbrellas in the ancient art and artifacts of Egypt  Assyria, Greece and China.

We can credit the Chinese for being the first to protect us from the rain. Their paper parasols received a layer of wax followed by lacquer that made the umbrella withstand the elements.

One of the first umbrella shops in existence opened in 1830 at 53 New Oxford Street in London, England. The shop, operated by James Smith and Sons, still operates regular hours at the same location today.

In 1928, Hans Haupt’s pocket umbrellas appeared. In 1969, Bradford E. Phillips, the owner of Totes Incorporated of Loveland, Ohio, obtained a patent for the first “working folding umbrella.”

Umbrellas have also been fashioned into hats as early as 1880 and as recently as 1987.

Photographers use umbrellas with a reflective inside as a diffusion device when employing artificial lighting and as a glare shield and shade, most often in portrait situations.

NATIONAL UMBRELLA DAY HISTORY

While the origins of the utilitarian holiday remain a mystery, it’s been celebrated since at least 2004. However, another celebration on the calendar promotes opening umbrellas indoors. The entire month of March recognizes the umbrella, too!

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalUmbrellaDay

Spring is sending rain this way. Be sure your umbrella is handy. Strike a pose with your favorite person under an umbrella and go splashing in puddles. Twirl a paper umbrella.
