NATIONAL WALNUT DAY

May 17th recognizes a “nutty” holiday.  Each year on this day, it is National Walnut Day.

Rounded, single-seeded stone fruits of the walnut tree, walnuts are a high-density source of nutrients, particularly proteins and essential fatty acids.  Like other tree nuts, walnuts must be processed and stored properly.

Grown for their seeds, the Persian or English Walnut and the Black Walnut are the two most common major species of walnuts.

  • English Walnut
    – originated in Persia
    – commercially produced
  • Black Walnut
    – native to eastern North America
    – high flavor
    – hard shell and poor hulling characteristics prevent its commercial growth for nut production.

The husk of the walnut, which is peeled away from the shell at harvest, and contain juice which will readily stain anything it comes in contact with.  The husk juice has been used as a cloth dye.

The United States is the world’s largest exporter of walnuts.

Ninety-nine percent of the nation’s commercial English walnuts are produced in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys of California.

HISTORY

Created to promote the consumption of walnuts, the first National Walnut Day was proclaimed in June 1949 by the Walnut Marketing Board.

On March 3, 1958, a Senate Resolution was introduced by William F. Knowland and signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on the first National Walnut Day, May 17, 1958.

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE COVERED CASHEWS DAY

National Chocolate Covered Cashews Day is observed each year on April 21st. Not unlike other nuts, cashews and chocolate get along well together. Of course, chocolate lovers savor the combination of nutty crunch and creamy, rich chocolate.

The cashew is a tree from the family Anacardiaceae.  Its English name comes from Portuguese for the fruit of the cashew tree “caju.”  Originally native to Northeastern Brazil, cashew trees are now widely grown in tropical climates for its cashew fruit and nuts.

With leaves arranged spirally and a leathery texture, the evergreen cashew tree grows as tall as 32 feet high. It also often grows with an irregularly shaped trunk. The buds produce small flowers that start out pale green then turn reddish, each one having five slender, acute petals.

Surprisingly, the shell of the cashew nut is toxic, which is why producers shell the cashew before selling it to consumers. While many people enjoy the cashew nut for its delicious buttery flavor on its own, adding chocolate makes it even more enjoyable. It makes a great gift during the winter holidays. However, chocolate-covered cashews are enjoyed all year long.

A member of the hickory family, the pecan is native to central and southern United States. “Pecan” is an Algonquian word, meaning a nut requiring a stone to crack. They are an excellent source of copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, zinc and vitamin E. Pecans can help reduce LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol levels in the blood. They are also rich in dietary fiber.

Pecans make great snacks all on their own, but they also make terrific garnishes to other foods such as desserts, salads or the main meal.  Sweet or savory, pecans can add a little glamor to a dish or be the star of the show.
