Labor Day

Labor Day on first Monday of every September recognizes the men and women who labor to build this country. Through a time-honored tradition with roots in the coordinated efforts of the labor movement of the 1800s, we salute the American workforce.

Since the founding of the United States, the country has relied on its workforce for its infrastructure. From its streets and buildings to its transportation and security, the nation runs on labor. The labor of what we create, build and harvest fuels our education and inspires our dreams.

This National Day also signals the official end of summer. Those who work hard, need time to play, too. With the school year starting and summer winding down, the long weekend beckons. They use the extra day earned to spend with families and catch some R&R. Some will explore cities while others will seek outdoor adventure. No matter where it’s spent, it’s well earned.

So if enjoying a last mini vacation, football game, parade, or barbeque, remember all the hard work the American worker has put into the lives we currently enjoy. Take a moment to remember all those teachers, doctors, road crews, miners, steel and auto industry, manufacturing, blue-collar, white-collar and everything in between that have given to the American economy and our way of life.

HISTORY OF LABOR DAY

On September 5, 1882, Labor Day first honored workers in New York City. The observance later moved to the first Monday in September in 1884. However, the observance wasn’t officially recognized by any government entity until 1885 when a municipal ordinance was passed. Interestingly, Oregon recognized the day in 1887 before New York state’s bill passed. As more states recognized the observance, its popularity grew. Then, in 1894, Congress declared the day to be a national observance.

Toasted marshmallows are a special part of summer evenings around a bonfire. Also, what better way to kick off a long weekend than to enjoy a delicious, warm, gooey, toasted marshmallow?

Add a pair of graham crackers and a chocolate bar – and ask for s’more! Depending upon personal preference, heat marshmallows to various degrees from gently toasted to a charred outer layer. To char the outer layer, ignite the marshmallow then quickly blow it out.

Marshmallows now come in a variety of flavors as well as sizes for maximum toasting opportunities. For a fun alternative, try roasting Marshmallow Peeps. Watch them closely as the granular sugar coating will burn more quickly.

Believe it or not, marshmallows date back to Ancient Egypt. The mallow plant provided a sap that the Egyptians used to create a candy with nuts and honey.

Ligonier, Indiana holds an annual Marshmallow Festival and is the marshmallow capital of the world.

Homemade marshmallows use sugar, unflavored gelatin, corn syrup, and flavoring. Try this recipe.

NATIONAL WIGGLE YOUR TOES DAY

On August 6, people can flaunt their feet on National Wiggle Your Toes Day! The day promotes paying a bit more attention to our toes and feet.

Step outside and stroll through the lush grass, allowing your toes to enjoy a well-deserved break. They’ll appreciate the change! While you’re at it, treat them to a little buff for some extra shine. Another favorite pastime for bare toes is to splash in water, so why not take them for a swim? Some spas even offer fish that nibble on your toes, giving them a fresh appearance. After that, you’ll enjoy a soothing massage, leaving your toes wiggling with joy!

Even small feet appreciate a soothing massage. Once everyone is feeling relaxed, you might find yourself engaging in some playful toe-tickling games!

Another perspective on this day is to consider going shoe shopping. With the school year approaching, if it hasn’t started already, finding well-fitting shoes is essential for comfort. Happy feet lead to joyful toe-wiggling, so make sure everyone in the family tries on their shoes!

Shoe Fitting Tips

  • Measure your feet.
  • Wear the sock for the shoe.
  • Leave 1/2 inch at the toe (they need to wiggle).
  • Also, leave some room at the heel (1/8 inch).
  • Walk around in the shoes.

It’s true! Giving your toes some attention can feel great, whether you’re enjoying the sand at the beach, relaxing in a park, or just chilling at home. Stretching and wiggling them can help improve circulation and relieve tension. Plus, it’s a nice way to connect with your body and enjoy the moment! Do you have a favorite place to wiggle your toes?
