STRAWBERRY RHUBARB WINE DAY

Strawberry Rhubarb Wine Day on the third Saturday in July celebrates the strawberry sweetness of summer with a relaxing sip of wine. The day offers an excellent opportunity for a wine tasting featuring a strawberry rhubarb wine, too.

In July of 2010, Maple River Winery in historic downtown Casselton, North Dakota, proudly accepted the Double Gold Award at the Indy International Wine Competition for its Strawberry Rhubarb Wine. What a delicious way to celebrate! But what is rhubarb?

It may be difficult for the common person to classify rhubarb. Is it a fruit? Is it a vegetable? While technically rhubarb may be known as a tart perennial vegetable, combining it with strawberries creates a unique flavor. Some even consider it the perfect balance of tart and sweet. Rhubarb even went to court over the matter. In 1947 in a customs court in Buffalo, New York, the court ruled that since rhubarb is used as a fruit in the United States, for the purposes of regulations and duties, it was to be counted as a fruit.

And from the wine perspective, that’s a good thing. Fruit wines sound so much better than vegetable wine. Of course, strawberry rhubarb wine celebrates the day with a flavor that tastes like summer.

National Salad Month

It’s time for the freshness of National Salad Month. Greens pop this time of year, and it’s easy to grow garden lettuce even in a small space. They fill the grocery with a variety of color, too.

Beyond the leafy part of the salad, the crisp vegetables, proteins, flavorful cheeses, herbs, berries, grains, and nuts make salads exciting and healthy.  If we don’t over indulge in the cheese and fatty meats, it’s usually the dressing that causes our salad downfall.

National Rhubarb Month

October recognizes Rhubarb Month! We only eat the stalk of the plant, making Rhubarb unique for this reason. While stalk of the rhubarb is tasty with many health benefits, the leaves are quite poisonous, so stay away from that part! The sweet, tart stalks make delicious desserts and wines and take on the flavors of other fruits and berries.

Here are some of the health benefits that are sure to make you want to give rhubarb a try.

-It can help with weight loss because it promotes a healthy metabolism.

-It can help prevent Alzheimer’s and other diseases that affect the brain because the Vitamin K levels help keep brain cells healthy.

-Rhubarb improves bone health, again, because of the Vitamin K that stimulates bone growth and repair.

-It improves your vision thanks to high levels of Vitamin C and lutein.

-Since it’s rich in Vitamin A, rhubarb is great for your skin and can even slow the aging process.

Celebrate Rhubarb… It’s even celebrated on several occasions throughout the year.

NATIONAL STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE DAY

On June 9th of each year, National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day is observed.  A tart vegetable, rhubarb is often paired with sweet fruits making for a delicious dessert.

Around the country, rhubarb is a perennial favorite for home gardens. One of the first fruits of their labors, gardeners begin to harvest rhubarb in the middle of May and early June, and it finds its way into desserts and preserves.  Since it takes on the flavor of the fruit or vegetable it is paired with, it is an excellent compliment to many recipes.

Not only is rhubarb known for making deliciously baked goods and satisfying the hankering for something from the garden early in the season, but it also has many other qualities.  Rub a cut stalk of rhubarb over a burnt skillet and let the high oleic acid content do the work.  It’s been a primary ingredient in many cleansers for over a 100 years.

Rhubarb is so high in oleic acid, in fact, the leaves are toxic to humans.  The stalks, however, are a consumable, rich and healthful source of oleic acid. The benefits of enjoying rhubarb could help reduce blood pressure, increase your body’s ability to burn fat and generate brain myelin. Now, that’s a reason to celebrate National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day!

While many think of rhubarb as a vegetable, it is actually a fruit by law. In 1947, the decision came to a New York court. The court determined that rhubarb is more frequently used as a fruit than a vegetable in the United States. As a result, the court’s determined that for the purposes of duties and regulations that rhubarb would be deemed a fruit.

Just like other spirits, rhubarb vodka is quite versatile. Don’t hesitate to experiment. Combine rhubarb vodka with sparkling wine or soda for that celebratory fizz. Add fresh fruit or rim the glass with sugar or dried herbs. Rhubarb vodka makes a delicious martini, mimosa and cosmopolitan, too.
