MOTHER’S DAY

Mother’s Day, May 10, 2020, is a time-honored tradition of recognizing the women in our lives who raised us, dried our tears, and well, mothered us. Everyone has one or has someone who is like a mother to them. On the second Sunday of May, we honor those women who are our mothers. Whether we shower her with gifts, take her to a fancy dinner or make her a homemade card, what moms want most is to be surrounded by the love of her family. Knowing the people they love are safe, sound, and healthy is a mom’s number one priority.

MOTHER’S DAY HISTORY

Mother’s Day has been celebrated around the world since, well, since motherhood. In the United States, Julia Ward Howe inspired the first movement toward a national observance during the Civil War. Appealing to the public for a “Mother’s Day for Peace” after witnessing the devastation left by war, Howe went on an international crusade. While her efforts never gained formal recognition for an official observance, she was acknowledged posthumously in 1988 for her achievements and her efforts for women’s rights.

In 1905, Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis successfully introduced the idea for a national holiday recognizing mothers. Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis had followed Howe’s campaign and had pursued her own volunteer efforts during the Civil War. Ann Marie died on May 9, 1905, and her daughter, Anna, missed her mother greatly. She started a dedicated letter-writing campaign to declare an official Mother’s Day. Through Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, the first observance occurred on May 10, 1908.

This day, to honor Anna Jarvis’s mother, grew into a national observance until in 1911 when every state participated. Soon it was spreading internationally, and on May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother’s Day a national holiday to be held on the second Sunday of May.

NATIONAL SUPERHERO DAY

Each year on April 28th, National Superhero Day honors superheroes, both real and fictional.

Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Spiderman are just some of the superheroes whose names we recognize. Star Wars, Star Trek,  Even though they are fictional, these superheroes are great role models for our children. They serve and protect while fighting evil. Your hero can come from another world or even time,if you fancy a certain Scottish Highlander from the 1700’s.

Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary. ~ Gerard Way

Our real-life superheroes may not have superpowers or wear capes, but they are also great role models who serve and protect while fighting evil.  Military personnel, police officers, firefighters, and teachers are just a few of the heroes who protect us on a daily basis.

Make sure first responders and medical personnel are included. As we have seen first hand in very recent times how hard they fight for us. Paramedics, nurses, Dr’s, and med-tech’s out there helping us beat Coronavirus.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalSuperheroDay

Take your favorite superhero to lunch and say thank you for all they do. Let them know that you appreciate them. Share what you think makes a hero. Take a picture with your favorite hero.

NATIONAL CUDDLE UP  DAY Jan 6

Each year on January 6th, National Cuddle Up Day encourages us to snuggle up with someone for the health benefits and more!

January is typically some of the coldest days of the year, so what better way to stay warm and reap the health benefits of cuddling on National Cuddle Up Day? Whether it’s a three dog night (a night so cold it takes three dogs to cuddle up with to stay warm) or only slightly chilly, there are multiple benefits to cuddling with human or canine or other pet.

Cuddling releases oxytocin. This hormone alone has tremendous health benefits. Besides giving us warm and fuzzy feelings, oxytocin reduces pain. So when the cold has made those muscles and joints ache, cuddling can help reduce those aches and pains.

Oxytocin also helps reduce heart disease, lowers blood pressure, stress, and anxiety. If it weren’t free, insurance carriers would probably cover cuddling since it’s such a huge health benefit!

Communication is more than just e-mails, texts, or conversation. Physical touch can communicate trust, commitment, safety, and reassurance. This goes for human to human contact as well as human to pet contact. Cuddling expresses all these things, which are vital to a healthy relationship.

Cuddling also boosts sexual desire. Dopamine is released, stimulating the brain to seek pleasure. But dopamine also can improve memory and focus as well.

Don’t have someone to cuddle up with?  Make an appointment for a massage.  Studies show massage provides similar benefits.

NATIONAL BICARBONATE OF SODA DAY – December 30

National Bicarbonate of Soda Day or Baking Soda day recognizes a staple of the home kitchen on December 30th.

Just a spoonful of sodium bicarbonate doesn’t have the same ring to it. But this extraordinary, naturally occurring substance provides health benefits while cleaning the house.

We add baking soda to recipes as a leavening agent to make our baked goods rise. Baking soda reacts with other acidic ingredients to make that happen. Many of us have combined baking soda and vinegar and seen the chemical reaction. When carbon dioxide is released, our baked goods rise.

It’s the exciting chemical makeup and physical characteristics of baking soda that enable it to be so effective. Since it is mildly acidic when it is mixed with water, dirt and grease dissolve more efficiently.

As a gentle abrasive, baking soda makes an ideal cleaning product for kitchen appliances, pots, and pans. It’s even recommended for chrome and the exterior of our automobiles.

The ability to neutralize odors is one of baking soda’s most powerful properties. By bringing the pH of the more acidic molecules into a more neutral balance, baking soda makes our homes…and us fresh again. Use it as a mouthwash, toothpaste, and deodorant for the mouth, feet, and underarms. Beyond personal hygiene, baking soda takes care of smells from pets and food, too.

It may even help prevent some powdery mildew or other fungal diseases on plants. While not always be effective, it doesn’t harm plants when appropriately mixed.

Most of us recognize this box when we think about baking soda.

Each year, ugly Christmas sweater wearers, decorate, shop, and do their darndest to out ugly last year’s ugliest sweater. Whether they sport the most lights or colors, bells or characters, ugly sweater wearers find the most ribbon and felt ladened sweaters and festoon them with glitter so blinding no Dustbuster invented will capture the wave left behind. The sweaters serve as beacons of light so bright, Rudolph himself will someday be out of a job.

Mom’s Homemade Pioneer Bread

This yummy, soft, flavorful bread is something special we grew up with. If you want a special treat share the with your family and friends. There was nothing better than getting off the school bus, and walking into our home filled with this fragrance.

Ingredients

2 pkg active dry yeast or cakes
1 1/2 cups warm water (105°-115°)
6 Tbsp granulated sugar
4 tsp iodized salt
2 eggs large eggs
6 Tbsp Crisco shortening
2/3 cup yellow corn meal
4 – 5 cups all-purpose flour divided
Extra softened butter and cornmeal for the top after baking (2 or 3 tsp of each)

Directions

In a large mixer bowl (we love our Kitchen Aid) dissolve the dry yeast in warm water.  The temperature must be in the range listed above.  To hot or to hold and the dough will not rise.
Add sugar, salt, Crisco, yellow cornmeal, and eggs.  ( I still crack mine in a separate dish to ensure no shell pieces. )
Blend on low speed. Scraping bowl several times to make sure everything is incorporated. About 30 seconds.
Increase mixer to medium for about 2 minutes scraping as needed.
Stir in enough remaining flour to make the dough easy to handle.
Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface.
Knead about 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
Place in well greased bowl. Grease top of dough with a little more Crisco.
Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size. About 1 – 1 1/2 hours.
Dough ready if indentation remains when touched.
Punch down dough and divide into 18″ x 9″ rectangle.
Fold crosswise into thirds, overlapping 2 sides
Roll beginning at open sides, seal with the side of your hand.
Place in well buttered or greased loaf pan.
Butter top and sprinkle with cornmeal.
Let rise again till doubled in size
Bake in preheated 400° oven for 25 – 30 min.
Remove to wire rack to cool.

Try it while still warm and buttered.  You will not be disappointed.
