NATIONAL PET DAY

National Pet Day on April 11th dedicates the day to those pets who may not always get the companionship and attention pets deserve. While loving our pets is something we do every day, the observance encourages helping out orphaned pet companions. It will improve their health and enhance their opportunities for adoption.

Sometimes their human companions aren’t well.  Making sure their forever furry friends are receiving the best of care will help relieve stress and worry.

National Pet Day is an excellent time to do a few checks for your pets.

  • Go through your furever family member’s toys. Throw away any items that are no longer safe.
  • Maintain your pet-friendly home. Keep cords and toxins secure from your four-legged friends. This includes phone chargers.
  • Verify when vaccinations are due and schedule an appointment to update if they are due.
  • Check collars to ensure tags are secure and numbers are current. We sometimes forget to update this information when we move or change numbers.
Meet Leo, Peanut, Wylie, Inky, Molly, Rosie, and Charlie.

NATIONAL PET DAY HISTORY

Celebrity Pet Lifestyle Expert & Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige founded the day in 2005.

ADOPT A SENIOR PET MONTH

When the weather turns chilly, Adopt a Senior Pet Month reminds us some four-legged friends need a family, too. In November, consider making a home for an older furry pet during Adopt a Senior Pet Month.

While the wriggly puppies and kittens make us smile with delight, you’d be surprised how well an older animal might fit into your lifestyle. Often, they have mellowed and lost some of their toddler energy. They don’t need the extra attention a puppy or kitten would require. If they need training, it is only specific to your home and routine.

There may be some adjustment with an older animal. Like humans, they may be set in their ways. But, in most cases, their history is known, and they can be easily matched with the right family or individual. So, if you are looking for a new companion, don’t overlook an older animal. You may be ignoring a loyal pet with a lot of life left in her.

Things to consider might be whether the fur baby has medical needs or requires a lot of space. Did he or she come from a home with children or other pets? If any of this information affects your adoption, you will need to reconsider.

Keep in mind the lifespan of many healthy dogs extends into their upper teens depending on their breed. When it comes to cats, it can be a little harder to predict. Since their lifespan ranges 10-15 years, those nine lives may not last as long as we thought. Even so, with good veterinarian care, you and your senior cat can enjoy many happy years together.

HISTORY

The ASPCA and petfinder.com founded Adopt a Senior Pet Month to improve the perception of senior pets as quality animals for adoptions. They are just as, and sometimes, more adoptable than younger animals. Consider adopting an older animal when you look into adopting this year.

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day brings a little love to ginger cats. Sometimes called marmalade cats or tiger cats, ginger cats are orange tabby cats. Tabby cats have striped, marbled, ticked, or spotted markings on their coats, and almost always have a marking in the shape of an M on their forehead. All orange cats are tabbies, but not all tabbies are orange. There are no solid orange or ginger cats. Ginger cats come in shades of orange, gold, and red. Most ginger cats are male, and both domestic or wild cats can be ginger cats.

While all ginger cats are honored today, one particular ginger cat, Doobert, is recognized today for his role in helping change animal transport. Chris Roy created a software platform that helps coordinate animal rescue relay transport, which is used by rescue organizations and volunteers, and named it after Doobert, his late ginger cat. Doobert is by no means the only ginger cat to have ever garnered a bit of attention. Milo of The Adventures of Milo and Otis fame, Garfield, Winston Churchill’s cat, JockJones from Alien, and Orangey, who starred in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, among other films, all have had their time in the spotlight. But whether famous or not, all ginger cats are celebrated today!

That is our Leo pictured. He looks like a lion cub and definitely has the heart of one. This baby fell down a wall from a space in the attic. His momma somehow broke in, and had her litter up there. All his siblings are jet black. We had to rescue him from behind the bedroom walls. Took us 3 days to find him, cut the wall open and eventually animal services was able to help recover him from the crawl space under the floor. Meet Leo on my YouTube channel!

While now he does not look it, he was rescued at two weeks old. Cold, starved and scared to death after his trip, it was touch and go for a while. Somewhere on his journey he must have consumed drywall or insulation that caused a bowel blockage. We had 3 vets tell us he just wouldn’t make it and we should let them euthanize him.. Today he lives happily chasing all our inside cats up the nearest wall and getting baths from them all.
