NATIONAL PINOT NOIR DAY

National Pinot Noir Day on August 18th encourages wine lovers to experience one of the wine world’s most versatile wines.

Since Pinot Noir’s high acidity along with the lower tannins, it complements food nicely. Wineries around the world produce pinot noir using red wine grapes and primarily the Pinot Noir varietal.

The dry wine includes hints of cherry and raspberry, as well as earthy flavors and notes of floral. It’s one of the world’s favorite red wines, too. One Pinot Noir grown and produced in Burgundy, France bears the name of the region. France also produces more Pinot Noir than any other country. However, today the grape is grown all over the world. The soil, climate, and how it is processed all impact the flavors.

NATIONAL WINE DAY

On May 25th each year, wine lovers everywhere pour a glass of their favorite wine to celebrate National Wine Day.  Whether it is Red or White, the sound of glassing “clinking” will be heard around the world today.

Made from fermented grapes or other fruits, wine is an alcoholic beverage. During the fermentation processes, yeast consumes the sugars in the grapes converting it into alcohol.  Different grapes produce different wines.  Winemakers will combine different wines to create more complex flavors.  Wines made from fruit or honey are often named according to the variety of fruit used.

Red wine varietals produce deep ruby reds as well as subtle ambers and browns. Their beautiful colors hint at the coming change in the season. With that, we can look for delicious menu changes, too. Besides, what better way to enjoy a great bottle of wine than by pairing it with excellent company and food.

Winemakers produce white wines from grapes with light yellow-green skins or light red skins. However, it’s not the color of the grapes that give the wine its color. It’s the tannins in the grape skins that color wine red and also the flavor. White wines are generally sweeter than red wines and are best served chilled. Most red wines are served at room temperature. However, a sweet red should also be chilled for the best flavor.

WORLD KIDNEY DAY

World Kidney Day on the second Thursday in March sets out each year to create increased awareness about kidney care.

Our kidneys are vital to our everyday health, and many health issues contribute to Chronic Kidney Disease. Preventative measures help to reduce our risks and improve outcomes.

Several health conditions impact our kidneys. These are just a few:

  • Diabetes is one of the leading causes of kidney failure.
  • High blood pressure weakens blood vessels, including the ones in the kidneys.
  • High Cholesterol impacts how well the kidneys work and can also lead to high blood pressure and diabetes.
  • Anorexia Nervosa causes chronic kidney disease due to the lack of a healthy balance of water, electrolytes, and salt in the body.
  • Lupus causes your immune system to attack parts of your body. It sometimes impacts the kidneys, too.
  • Polycystic Kidney Disease causes cysts to grow inside the kidneys.

Early Chronic Kidney Disease usually has no symptoms, so early detection is essential. Educating medical professionals, identifying high-risk populations, and increasing donor programs are some of the key objectives of reducing Chronic Kidney Disease.

In 2022 I was rushed to the emergency room with kidney stones I didn’t even know I had. Today I am happy to say I had the stones on the left surgically removed. In the process I learned to take better care of myself and my kidneys. I did such a good job I ended up not needing surgery on the right. My urologist gave me a clean bill of health and encouragement to keep them that way.

WORLD KIDNEY DAY HISTORY

In 2006, the International Federation of Kidney Foundations created World Kidney Day to raise awareness and increase educational opportunities regarding kidney diseases and prevention.

NATIONAL PEANUT CLUSTER DAY

March 8th is National Peanut Cluster Day!  Melted chocolate mixed with peanuts makes a perfect combination for sweet and salty deliciousness!

Two things had to happen for peanut clusters to even exist. First, a method had to be invented for the cocoa bean to be processed and transformed into what we know as chocolate. That process wasn’t widely used until about the late 1890s and just about the same time the second extraordinary thing happened; agriculture found a way to grow the peanut and bring it to the public with steel tools and steam power.

It didn’t take long for confectioneries to add the now readily available peanuts to melted chocolate. The sheer simplicity of the salty peanuts added to sweetened chocolate is a mouthwatering temptation few can resist, even today. Candy makers find them to be a popular addition to cookie tins or other holiday baskets. Their simplicity allows bakers to easily round out any cookie or bar tray. They also quickly satisfy a snack craving without much effort at all.
