NATIONAL CORN ON THE COB DAY

June 11 of each year is the day to celebrate National Corn on the Cob Day.  Fresh corn on the cob is a summertime treat that people from all corners of the United States look forward to as we start the picnic season.

Corn on the cob is also known in different regions as pole corn, cornstick, sweet pole, butter-pop or long maize.   It is a sweet corn that is picked when the kernels are still tender when it’s in its milk stage.

Boiling, steaming, roasting or grilling are the most common ways of preparing corn on the cob.   If it is grilled or oven roasted, the corn is usually left in its husk during the cooking process.

Proper dinner etiquette for eating corn says it is appropriate to hold the cob at each end with your fingers.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Get the butter and the salt shaker ready, gather up some friends, start your grill and enjoy some corn on the cob! For those with hankering for corn off the cob, use #CornOnTheCobDay on social media and tell the world!

NATIONAL CROUTON DAY

National Crouton Day on May 13th each year recognizes a tasty topping that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Many of our words for bread-related foods come from the French and for good reason. The French love bread. Croutons are no different. The French word croûte means crust. Croutons are often made from day-old bread which has been cut into cubes and seasoned with herbs, oil, or butter. The bread is then either toasted in the oven or tossed in a hot pan until crunchy.

We’re probably most familiar with croutons on our salads. And when we add croutons to our salads, it’s a bit of celebration – a crunch celebration. Each flavorful, crunchy bite adds to our crispy, enjoyment.

NATIONAL TOAST DAY

Would you believe National Toast Day honoring the humble slice is on the Last Thursday in February? But it is so very versatile. It carries a multitude of jams, jellies, marmalades and fruit compotes. We don’t stop there. Toast transports proteins and veggies, sprouts, and soaks up sauces and drippings.

Perhaps we have overlooked the necessity of toast, and it shall have its due. We’re able to toast it to a variety of shades pleasing everyone. Whether we lightly toast it or char it to a dark crisp, it serves as a perfect medium for building breakfast or sandwiches. It accepts seasoning quite well, too. Add butter, gee, avocado, or honey. It doesn’t matter your preference. Cinnamon and sugar? Well, it might depend on your mood.

Or perhaps the bread you have on hand. Is it cinnamon raisin bread or whole wheat? Do you only have two ends left? Some think those are the best kinds of toast. Others well, you can’t teach everyone the best kinds of toast making.

NATIONAL TOAST DAY HISTORY

National Toast Day was started in 2014 by The Tiptree World Bread Awards to celebrate toast and all the breads we make it with. While the organization is in the UK, the day has found a following in the United States.

NATIONAL OATMEAL MONTH

In January, National Oatmeal Month declares it’s possible to create healthy changes with this grain. Celebrate all month long by incorporating oatmeal in your breakfast and snacks. We will show you how!

Oatmeal has earned a reputation for being heart healthy and soothing itchy skin. Beyond several other possible health benefits, steel cut oats add a nutty flavor and texture to your meal.  If you’re looking for a softer and quicker cook to your oats, rolled oats cook almost instantly!

  • Add steel cut oats, fresh fruit, and nuts to yogurt.
  • Whip up some instant oatmeal and add a tablespoon of peanut butter and dried fruit.
  • Mix together 1 cup steel cut oats, 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1/2 cup ground flax seed, 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips, 1/3 cup honey, and 1 tablespoon chia seeds. Roll into 1 inch balls and store in the refrigerator or freezer. They make excellent mid-day snacks and are packed with protein, low in sugar, and when you choose a natural peanut butter or powdered peanut butter, has no cholesterol.
  • Granola comes in a variety of combinations. Don’t hesitate to mix up your granola. Try a spicy blend or a tropical version.
  • Baked oatmeal offers a hot breakfast option that can be made ahead of time and reheated as needed. Customize it to fit your family’s needs.
  • Add oats to thicken your soups and a nutty flavor.
  • Makes a great alternative in Meat Loaf too.
  • Layer yogurt, fruit, and granola for a fun parfait.
  • Celebrate National Oatmeal Muffin Day on December 19!

Don’t forget National Oatmeal Day, Better Breakfast Day, Granola Bar, Oatmeal Cookie Day, and National Cereal Day.

NATIONAL MONTE CRISTO DAY

On September 17th, National Monte Cristo Day recognizes the indulgent and delicious sandwich.

A Monte Cristo is a fried ham and cheese sandwich. The French sandwich called the croque-monsieur inspired the Monte Cristo. However, the sandwich goes by other names, too. If you find a menu with French Sandwich, Toasted Ham Sandwich, or a French Toasted Cheese Sandwich, order them for a taste of Monte Cristo.

While the Monte Cristo typically offers a savory sandwich, sometimes powdered sugar and jam preserves sweeten it, too. To achieve the crispy outer coating, chefs dip the prepared sandwich in an egg batter. Then they either pan-fry or deep-fry the sandwich to perfection.

Occasionally, variations include sliced turkey and different types of cheese. Other options for serving are available, too. For example, some like to serve a grilled version. Another version may be served open-faced and heated under a grill or broiler.
