NATIONAL PEDIATRIC HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY NURSES DAY

On September 8th, National Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day recognizes the hardworking and dedicated professionals bringing care to patients every day.

Honoring nurses caring for pediatric hematology and oncology patients, the observance takes place during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. These dedicated professionals provide quality nursing care for children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer and blood disorders. Additionally, they provide the highest standard of physical and emotional support to these most precious patients and their families.

Cancer is frightening enough. When applied to children, pediatric care requires special skills and training. Not only do children relate to pain differently, but their growing bodies require specialized attention. These nurses provide valuable care and guidance to families.

From the first diagnosis and through each treatment, these experts in pediatric care offer untiring support. Day and night, the nurses answer questions, monitor, and track progress. Their knowledge of each patient’s needs provides essential information to the entire team.

NATIONAL GRATEFUL PATIENT DAY

National Grateful Patient Day on September 7th provides an opportunity to show appreciation for the hard-working professionals in the medical industry. The day also focuses gratitude toward the families and caregivers of anyone receiving life-giving medical care. Additionally, the day honors the indomitable spirit of these courageous patients who are grateful to be alive.

As a force, gratefulness offers the power of hope. The gift of gratitude provides a spark of energy to the recipient, too. However, it also inspires anyone who hears the story. The healing spark of hope told from the perspective of a grateful patient – this day involves everyone who has ever felt a healing touch.

GRATEFUL PATIENT DAY HISTORY

As an NFL player, Rolf Benirschke faced a battle on the field every Sunday. But more importantly, he fought his own personal battle with ulcerative colitis, ostomy surgery, and Hepatitis C—from his numerous blood transfusions. It nearly cost him his life. He emerged as a grateful patient, dedicating his life to patient advocacy. Rolf became passionate about encouraging research and innovation related to future therapies.

September 7, 1980, was Rolf’s improbable and nearly impossible comeback to the NFL after his illness. His two field goals and four extra points contributed to the Chargers 34-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

NATIONAL CAREER NURSE ASSISTANTS’ DAY

Every year on the first day of National Nursing Assistants’ Week, we observe National Career Nurse Assistants’ Day.  This day is set aside to recognize the nursing assistants who dedicate their lives to the well-being of others for 5 to as many as 58 years.

Nursing assistants many times work in hospitals and nursing homes performing everyday living tasks for the elderly, chronically ill or rehabilitation patients who cannot care for themselves.  A more in-depth training and qualification that covers a wider scope of responsibility is indicated by government certification.  The state distributes these certification exams, and the classes to study for them are offered by the American Red Cross as well as other providers.

HISTORY

National Career Nurse Assistants’ Day is sponsored by the National Network of Career Nursing Assistants.

EMERGENCY NURSES WEEK – Week of Emergency Nurses Day in October

Emergency Nurses Week recognizes the unique value of emergency, ER, or trauma nurses. It always takes place the week surrounding Emergency Nurses Day, the second Wednesday in October each year.

These professionals focus on the immediate care of patients who require medical attention to avoid long-term disability or death. It is a complex role, treating the trigger event for the emergency visit as well as communicating with the patient, the families, and the care team.

This front line position is very people-centered, not only physically but emotionally too. People in emergency situations often feel distraught and upset. So, the emergency nurse must treat the emotions as well as the emergency medical issue. It can be chaotic, especially if the cause of the visit is a violent incident.

Emergency nurses are in demand. Not only is because there a growing demand for emergency health care, but also, there is a high turnover rate for emergency nurses. That’s why the latest employment trend in the field is for traveling, ER, or trauma nurse. They work for a traveling nursing agency that sends them around the country to live and work in a critical need area. A quick search on the Internet shows 17,000 openings for traveling emergency or trauma nurse.

NATIONAL EMERGENCY WEEK HISTORY

1989, the organization Emergency Nursing Association (ENA) has recognized the second Wednesday in October as Emergency Nurses Day.

2001, ENA expanded the celebration to devote an entire week to honoring emergency nurses.
