World Sea Turtle Day

Every year on June 16th, World Sea Turtle Day highlights the importance of sea turtles. The day also encourages global supporters to dive into the threats that sea turtles face.

Did you know that sea turtles have been on the earth for over 100 million years? This means that sea turtles co-existed with dinosaurs. There are seven species of sea turtles. These include green, hawksbill, Kemp’s ridley, leatherback, loggerhead, and the Olive ridley. Of these species of sea turtles, the leatherback is the largest. The leatherback sea turtle weighs anywhere from 550 to 2,000 pounds! This type of sea turtle grows up to six feet in length. Sea turtles live in both cool and warm waters throughout the world. However, the flatback can only be found in Australia.

Sea Turtle Facts

  • Sea turtles can live between 50 to 100 years.
  • Some sea turtles travel more than 1,000 miles to return to their nesting ground.
  • Sea turtles nest multiple times, about two weeks apart, and lay up to 125 eggs per nest.
  • Most sea turtles nest at night, except for the Kemp’s ridley.
  • Leatherback sea turtles can dive nearly 4,000 feet into the water.
  • Unlike other kinds of turtles, sea turtles cannot retreat into their shell.
  • A large group of nesting sea turtles is called an “arribadas”, which is Spanish for “arrival.”

One more interesting fact is that the temperature of the nest determines the sea turtle’s sex. Male hatchlings are born in cooler temperatures. When temperatures in the next are warm it produces female hatchlings. Fluctuating temperatures produce a mix of male and female baby sea turtles.

Unfortunately, nearly every species of sea turtle is considered endangered. The hawksbills and Kemp’s ridley are both critically endangered. Entanglement in marine debris, destruction of habitats, and poaching for meat and eggs are among the top reasons for their endangerment.

WORLD SEA TURTLE DAY HISTORY

In the year 2000, turtle conservation organizations came together to create World Sea Turtle Day. June 16th was chosen to honor the birthday of Dr. Archie Carr, a renowned sea turtle conservationist. Dr. Carr also founded the Sea Turtle Conservancy in Gainesville, Florida.

NATIONAL POLLINATORS MONTH

National Pollinators Month in June encourages the planting of pollinator gardens of native, non-invasive pollen and nectar-producing plants. When these gardens bloom, they attract bees, birds, bats, and other natural pollinators.

These pollinators make the difference between valuable fruits and vegetables on our tables. While we’re planting native flowers and trees, we’re also providing for our future. Pollinators such as the monarch butterfly and the honey bee have been in decline. All the reasons have not been identified. However, increasing the available habitat does help!

HISTORY

National Pollinators Month is an initiative of the National Wildlife Federation. With pollinators on the decline, their initiative is designed to increase native pollen and nectar-producing through the Million Garden Challenge.

Zoo & Aquarium Month

National Zoo and Aquarium Month is an excellent time to plan your trip and make a donation to favorite zoo or aquarium.

Launch into summer by visiting an aquarium or zoo near you. All around the country, parks are gearing up for visitors. They offer programs all year round regarding the wildlife they support that are educational and fun.

HOW TO OBSERVE

There’s more than one way to explore your zoo or aquarium.

  • Many zoos offer passes that are good at other wildlife parks and aquariums across the country.
  • Learn about vanishing habitat and conservation while visiting the wildlife parks.
  • Check out their rehabilitation programs and learn how zoologist and veterinarians help injured animals return to the wild.
  • Sponsor one of your favorite creatures! Many programs offer a way to help support the wildlife we enjoy most, especially those that are endangered.
  • Speaking of endangered species, learn about reduced populations and find out which ones are making comebacks.
  • Which zoos have nurseries? Several wildlife programs pair up to create conservative breeding programs to help create a sustainable population. Ask if your zoo participates in Species Survival Plans.

National Camping Month

National Camping Month in June is an excellent time to pack up your gear and experience nature.

Whether you like roughing it or prefer to have a few modern conveniences when heading out to the trail, it’s important to keep a few things in mind.

1. Make sure you have plenty of freshwater or a freshwater source.
2. Take a first aid kit and that it is stocked.
3. Pack waterproof matches.
4. Take non-perishable food such as granola bars, jerky, peanut butter, chocolate bars, and dried fruits, especially if you are not taking a cooler.
5. Pack fruits, vegetables, and meats separately and keep chilled in a cooler.
6. Include sunblock, even for cloudy days.
7. Rain gear, jackets, and blankets are necessary for cooler weather.

Around the country, there are a variety of campsites available. The more modern campsite includes showers and recreational facilities. These often include water hookups and parking pads for RVs and campers and cabins to rent as well as more primitive sites with no electrical hookups designed for tent usage.  Other parks only allow primitive camping and require everything you pack into the park to be packed out. So, seriously consider your needs if you are hiking into the park for your stay. These are not for the glampers.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalCampingMonth

Gather family and friends, don’t forget the s’mores supply and go camping! Nature is calling and there are so many ways to enjoy a weekend or even more camping.  Use #NationalCampingMonth to show us how you camp.
