NATIONAL PET PARENTS DAY

On the last Sunday in April, National Pet Parents Day recognizes the pet parents who go the extra mile to care for their fur babies. 

There is a very special connection, a unique bond, between a pet and its owner. This unique relationship, which can often last for many years, is often a vital part of the ‘pet parents’ life. Their loved pets are considered to be a member of the family. 

Some pet parents are new to the experience. Others are repeat performers. No matter how many pets or how often they engage in the relationship, it’s a special one every time. 

The observance was created to honor all dedicated pet parents across the nation with a special day of their own. 

We are dedicated pet parents.  Our furbabies take the place of real children.  Our marriage while not blessed with human children, we’re making up for it with kitties.

We currently have 6 inside cats and up to 20 community outsiders.  All are rescues.  The outsiders are/were feral.  While they have had TNR they are not fully touchable.  We would bring them inside in a heartbeat if we could.  We have the unfortunate location of being just rural enough that people dump cats here.  We do our best for them.  Our YouTube channel will hopefully help fund some of the care and feeding for these guys. Donations can be made through our Amazon Wish list.  On a fixed income it is always appreciated with 100% going to food, water, shelter, and vet care if we can catch them…

We also have Alfie, Harry, Button, Angel, Caramel, Rusty, Kitten, Bashful, Hariett, Patches, Sneakers, Zoro, Monte, Blackie, Sandy, Tabby and a few others that show up from time to time.  This year we have at least 3 ferals yet to be TNR despite our best efforts to catch them, that are having kittens.  Im quite sure they’ll come closer as they get older.  We add them to our TNR list.  We started giving them names so we can tell them apart.

There are several ways to celebrate this day.

  • Give yourself some extra cuddle time with your pets
  • Pick up some pet swag like a tee or my favorite coffee cup.
  • Take a photo with your pet.
  • Adopt from a local shelter. 
  • Learn about ASPCA, Animal Allies, and your local shelters. Our local shelter recieved a grant.  They are doing TNR until funding runs out for community cats.
  • We do have a wishlist on Amazon for anyone who feels like donating.

NATIONAL ZOO LOVERS DAY

Each year on April 8th, National Zoo Lovers Day encourages us to explore our local zoos. Each year millions of people visit zoos and learn about the many animals that live there. Also known as zoological parks, many of them serve as breeding centers. These facilities are relied upon when species are endangered or at risk of becoming endangered. They also provide education to the public about a broad variety of animals and their habitats. 

Enjoy seeing your favorite animals swinging from the trees or splashing in the water and have a fun-filled day.

A few zoo facts:

  • The Vienna Zoo is the oldest existing zoo and was opened to the public in 1765.
  • The United State’s first zoo open to the public, Central Park Zoo, opened in 1864 in New York.
  • Philadelphia Zoo holds the oldest zoo charter, formed in 1859. It officially opened to the public in 1874.
  • There are 350 zoos in the United States
  • Approximately 175 million people visit a zoo each year.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom has had more than 9.8 million annual visitors.
  • More than 3.2 million people visit the San Diego Zoo each year.

  • Make a donation to a zoo program.
  • Share your zoo experiences with others.
  • Take a virtual tour of a zoo. There are many different kinds of zoos. Take a virtual tour of this reptile zoo and learn about the reptiles that live there.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalLoveYourPetDay

Bring your pet a special treat, take an extra-long walk or give them more attention. Other ideas include:

  • Check that their vaccines are up to date.
  • Watch a pet video with them full of cats, dogs and other critters. 
  • Give them a few extra strokes with the brush while grooming. 
  • Practice their favorite commands – sit, shake, rollover. 
  • Play their favorite game or bring out their best toy.
  • Inspect their toys to make sure they’re in good shape. Throw out any broken toys. 
  • Wash their bedding, even if it’s not their laundry day. Let them fluff it up just the way they like it. 

The kittens featured in this post were rescued after their mother abandoned them on our front porch.  We bottle fed them till they could eat solids on their own. Now they rule the house.  They are joined in our home by 4 other cats (Charlie, Inky, Molly, and Leo) and (Rosie) a well mannered dog.   Be sure to meet them all on our YouTube channel.  Any proceeds earned from our channel support the care of our feral community.
