November 8, Tongue Twister Day

“Peter piper picked a pack of pickled peppers.”. We’ve all heard them but can you day the tongue twisters fast 3 times in a row?

These feats of tongue dexterity often leave us tongue tied. Training with these feats of language and pronunciation skills leave us with better communication skills. So while fun to both say and listen as your friends and family trip over the words keep in mind mastery of these can lead to better speaking habits. Some may even help when learning foreign languages.

These are often used as part of general conversation and speech therapies. There are a variety of reasons for speech therapies. My niece has taken it for several years. When she started getting to age 3 or 4 you could not understand a word she was saying. By the time she was school age, it was greatly improved.

I also had many sessions of speech therapy after a burst aneurysm stroke. They pair it with physical and occupational therapy, to aid in recovery. Now other than on occasion losing a word I am as articulate as ever. As you can see throughout this blog and other instances. Now people like Professor Henry Highins would never know I had a stroke.

My Fair Lady is a rather famous movie that explores the premise of how speaking better can affect your life. They explore it in regards to social status. In today’s world it more directly pertains to career paths.

A tongue twister is a phrase that is very hard for people to articulate, especially when spoken in a sequence really fast.

Finger Fumblers

Most languages, including sign language have their own versions of tongue twisters. In sign language, they are known as finger fumblers. In many cultures, children usually use them as word games.

Tongue twisters tend to rely on using similar sounding words that aliterate. That means that the first letters or sounds in the words are the same.

How to Celebrate?

  • Have a tongue twister contest with family, friends and co-workers. Whoever is able to say out a tongue twister without making mistakes wins.
  • Make up your own tongue twister.

Did You Know…

…that she sells sea-shells on the sea-shore is a popular tongue twister that comes from a poem written by British songwriter Terry Sullivan and was based on the life of Mary Anning, a British fossil collector who was known to scout the beaches for fossils?

Jennifer lives happily in North Florida with her husband Scott and after a stroke and two brain surgeries her mom. While not blessed with children they dote on their four legged children four cats. I started writing after spinal surgery required second round of physical therapy to learn to walk yet again. While reading is a favorite hobby writing is something new with the launch of this blog and hopefully a fiction novel in the future.
