ROMANCE AWARENESS MONTH

February isn’t the only romantic month on the calendar.  Check your relationship’s pulse during Romance Awareness in August. If it needs a jump start, there are lots of ways to put some spark back into the relationship.

Add excitement by planning the unexpected. Surprise your significant other with a date night with only a few clues as to the destination. None of it needs to be expensive or elaborate, but making an effort to make the evening fun, spontaneous and memorable will be worthwhile. Maybe it’s a note clipped to a single flower saying you’ll pick her up at 7 PM and to wear sandals. It ends up with a picnic on the beach; or it could be a text to him that you’re in the mood for takeout, be ready in an hour – a three-hour road trip later and you’re at the nearest drive-in theater eating hot wings under the stars.

The simple things mean so much more than elaborate gifts. A wrapped mint slipped into a pocket with an encouraging message on the day of big presentation sends waves of support and love when it’s needed most. Sharing our successes with those we love is another way of enhancing the romance. Toast each other’s success and bask in the glow.

Spend quiet time with each other. Read books, do chores, sleep. Just be. Sometimes, just being together in the same room generates energy that may have been missing.

Cultivate activities as a couple you enjoy doing together. Whether you enjoy games, biking, sports, antiquing, travel, music or haven’t discovered your interest yet, get out there and explore.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Being aware of and adding more romance into your relationship will be a win-win for both you and your significant other. Passion has always been an essential part of relationships. Sometimes it is the little things that make a big difference, such as; holding hands, a shoulder rub, a flower, making dinner together, playing your favorite song, leaving a personal note, or watching a movie together.

Romance Awareness Month is also a great time to catch up on some reading with the wide selection of romance novels that are available.

If posting on social media use #RomanceAwarenessMonth.

NATIONAL PINK DAY

National Pink Day is observed annually on June 23rd.  This day is set aside for the color pink and all it represents.

First used as a color name in the late 17th century, pink is a pale red color which got its name from a flower of same name.

According to surveys in both the United States and Europe with results indicating that the color pink combined with white or pale blue is most commonly associated with femininity, sensitivity, tenderness, childhood and the romantic.  Pink, when combined with violet or black is associated with eroticism and seduction.

Dating back to the 14th century, “to pink” (the verb) means “to decorate with a perforated or punched pattern.”

It would have been curious to find pink used in fabric or decor during the Middle Ages.  Occasionally it was seen in women’s fashion and religious art.  In the 13th and 14th century, the Christ child was sometimes portrayed dressed in pink, the color associated with the body of Christ. Pink was mainly used for the flesh color of faces and hands during the Renaissance.

The Rococo Period (1720-1777) was the golden age for the color pink. Pastel colors became very fashionable in all the courts of Europe during this time.  Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), the mistress of King Louis XV of France, was known for wearing the color pink, often combined with light blue.  At one point in time, Ms. Pompadour had a particular tint of pink made specifically for her.

Pink ribbons or decorations were worn by young boys in 19th century England.  The men in England wore red uniforms and since boys were considered small men, boys wore pink.

Pink became much bolder, brighter and more assertive in the 20th century and 1931, the color “Shocking Pink” was introduced.

As one of the most common colors of flowers, pink serves to attract the insects and birds that are necessary for pollination.

Celebrating January Birthdays: The Timeless Allure of Garnet

January babies, you enter the world under a quiet, frosty sky just as the new year begins—a perfect moment for fresh starts and bold resolutions. Your birthstone, garnet, mirrors that energy beautifully. Far from being just a single red gem, garnet appears in nearly every color of the rainbow (except blue), yet it’s the deep, wine-red variety that has captured hearts for centuries. Ancient warriors wore garnet into battle for protection, medieval lovers exchanged it as a pledge of devotion, and today it remains the ultimate symbol of passion, commitment, and enduring love.

The name “garnet” comes from the Latin granatum, meaning “seed” or “pomegranate,” because its rich crimson crystals resemble the juicy arils of that mythic fruit. In lore, garnet is tied to perseverance and hope—no wonder it became the stone for those born in the first month of the year, when we all need a little extra fire to chase away winter’s chill. It’s believed to inspire courage, boost creativity, and even safeguard travelers (perfect for anyone planning a birthday getaway in the snowy season).

Romantically, few stones rival garnet’s reputation. In Victorian times, it was the ultimate token of deep, steadfast love. A garnet ring or pendant whispered “I will love you through every storm.” Legend says it lights a flame in the heart that never dims, making it a favorite for second wedding anniversaries and January engagements. Couples often choose garnet jewelry to mark milestones because it carries the promise: “My love for you is as constant as this stone.”

Beyond romance, garnet is a stone of vitality and strength. It’s said to energize the wearer, balance emotions, and spark inspiration—qualities every January birthday star needs when the post-holiday slump threatens motivation. Wearing your birthstone close (whether as a bold cocktail ring, delicate earrings, or a simple pendant) is like carrying a pocket-sized pep talk that says, “You’ve got this.”

So to everyone blowing out candles this month: Happy Birthday! May your year glow with the same fierce, gorgeous light that radiates from your garnet. May it remind you that even in the coldest season, there is warmth, passion, and unbreakable love waiting to be discovered. Here’s to you, January gems—you were born to shine. ❤️

CREATIVE ROMANCE MONTH

February is a month of love and romance. So it’s no surprise it is also designated as National Creative Romance Month.

Psychologists tell us dating is vital to a relationship. A date is not something to be tolerated or suffered through. Instead, dating should be fun and pleasurable for both parties. Psychologists also stress the importance of trying new and different things to boost relationships to become more romantic and fun.

A surprise getaway is a great way to get your partner excited about some alone time. Keep them guessing by making the surprise destination into a game. For example, cut up a brochure and have your partner assemble it like a jigsaw puzzle! You might even consider blindfolding your partner and then driving them to your destination as a surprise. A blindfold may not be feasible depending on how long it takes to arrive at your surprise, of course.

Movie nights are also a great way to bring some romance back into your relationship. Plan a night out at the movies. Make it extra special by finding a drive-in movie theater near you. Make the drive-in movie extra special by renting a classic car. Afterward, you might spend a little time stargazing together.

Planning a date during the day can also be special. Start by visiting your partner’s favorite museum or art gallery. Then, continue the date with a picnic in the park by filling a picnic basket with some of your partner’s favorite wines, cheeses, and fruits. Picnics are so much fun that July is designated as National Picnic Month. Plan your spread in front of a cozy fire for a winter picnic.
