International Cat Day is observed annually on August 8. This is a day to celebrate one of the world’s favorite pets.

Cats provide companionship and comfort to many. Studies show having a cat can help to lower stress, anxiety and even depression. Having a cat in your home can also help reduce the risk of heart disease in high-risk individuals. It can even help fight mental illness. Cats can be entertaining as well as beneficial to your health.

International Cat Day was created by International Fund for Animal Welfare in 2002. In 2023 International Cat Care became the custodians of International Cat Day (effective August 3, 2020), please discover more information at:

Around our home caring for cats has become quite the love affair. We have 6 inside cats and care for a large number of outside cats that started off as feral. There is no more rewarding feeling than getting a feral cat to trust you enough to pet and protect them. After enduring countless years of wandering and nothing dependable, it can only be done by building trust and a ton of patience.

We work with local animal groups and shelters to TNR. We have found homes for any that are born before that can happen. As we live outside of a major urban area we often aquire new visitors who were dumped by owners. Please like and subscribe to our YouTube channel. We use the proceeds to continue caring for these cats. Sadly we were forced to say Goodbye to Charlie on July 17th, 2024. After 12 years of love and companionship, Charlie crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He will live forever in our hearts.

National Kitten Day on July 10th purrfectly celebrates the cuddly warmth of a kitty. The miniature furballs of energy snuggle their way into our hearts with no effort all. Within a flick of their tiny ears, we’re in love.

The day aims to remind us that while kittens are well equipped to find their way into our hearts, many don’t find homes. They’re abandoned at shelters, on the side of the road or wild and feral. Spaying and neutering our pets, including our cats, is vital to their health and keeping the stray population down. The featured image are rescues who have become permanent members of our family.

Another goal of awareness campaigns like this one is to encourage adoptions. Instead of purchasing a kitten from a pet store, adopt from a shelter. Many kittens are born in shelters. While their ages may vary, all kittens do become cats.

Follow the shelter’s guidelines. Keep these tips in mind when adopting:

There’s an application process. Read through it and understand it. The guidelines are for the safety of the animals, the employees, and you.
Ask questions. It’s important there’s an understanding between you and the shelter. Most shelters have volunteers and paid employees. However, they work on a very tight budget. Please don’t expect any special accommodations.
A good shelter will place the interests of the animal first. They want the cat to have a successful placement. Some animals have anxiety while others get along with anyone and every type of animal.
Consider the size of your home and where you live – an apartment or house.
Who lives with you? That includes people and pets – does everyone get along and does anyone have allergies?
How much time do you have for a pet?
So you’ve spotted the kitten for you. Be sure to make several visits to the shelter. Play with the kitten. Spend time grooming them. See how the kitten reacts to other cats. Learn the kitten’s behavior.

Maybe Fuzzy Bear has health issues or doesn’t get along with children. Perhaps another kitten gets along better with dogs. All these factors will be considered on your application.

Peanut and Wylie are the most bonded pair I’ve ever seen.

When National Hug Your Cat Day rolls around each year on June 4th, the purr-fect opportunity presents itself for some snuggle time. Depending on your feline critter’s nature, hugging may not be in the cards. However, like most animals, touch is a vital part of communication – and the same goes for the claw-ful kind.

All kitten aside, if you’re fur-tunate enough to have a feline friend, any attention they give you may be a blessing. Others never leave your side and cuddle often. Of course, most cats have purr-sonality in spades.

Meow, if your feline friend becomes hiss-terical when you try to hug him, you may have to settle for a boop. It’s un-furr-tunate, but it is an option. Those who don’t have any feline companionship may need to litter-ally visit a neighbor or volunteer at a local shelter. Those paw-some critters need some hugs, too.

March forth to the rhythm of life on Marching Music Day every March 4th and honor the dedicated musicians and performers of many diverse styles and backgrounds. Marching Music Day celebrates all varieties of art forms that bring us “music on the move.”

For centuries, the beat of a drum has kept military units moving in unison. From the training field to the battlefield, the football stadium to the Broadway stage, marching music delights performers and spectators. They perform in small gyms, auditoriums, and grand arenas. From small parades to impressive spectacles, fifers, pipers, buglers, drum corps, marching bands, parade groups, drill teams, and color guards bring music to life. They bring audiences to their feet and stir a crowd to an enthusiastic roar.

Military Roots & Technology

The military roots of the drum corps have evolved over time. A well-rooted art form, marching music moves us during somber memorials. And yet it thrills us with an ability to perform delightful music and execute intricate routines with exact precision. Drill squads, marching bands, drum lines, and drum corps name but a few of the many styles of marching music that have developed over the years. They all engage hundreds of thousands of performers of all ages, abilities and experience levels.

We see marching music in schools, military units, community celebrations and local auxiliaries. The music is as varied as the ensembles themselves, too! Instruments may be limited to brass in some settings or may include woodwinds and electric guitars in others. Dance teams, baton twirlers and color guards perform to soundtracks ranging from traditional, standard marches to rock and roll, jazz, contemporary and electronic dance music.

And marching music keeps changing! Spectacular string bands incorporate their own unique sound and elaborate costuming. Technology has brought about the production of lighter, electronic and digital instruments making it possible for musicians to march with violins, cellos, basses and synthesizers to entertain crowds in unique and creative new ways.

MARCHING MUSIC DAY HISTORY

Drum Corps International founded Marching Music Day to celebrate marching music as an engaging and ever-expanding art form around the world, and to help celebrate Music In Our Schools Month. As an ideal play on words, March Fourth was chosen.

Across the country on January 9th each year, citizens take the lead to show support on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Law Enforcement Officers of every rank and file have chosen a profession that puts their life on the line every day for their communities. They’ve answered a call to public service that is demanding and often unappreciated.

From local, state, and federal, their duties command dedication. The jobs are often thankless and take them away from their families for long hours. Rarely do they know what their days have in store for them. Often law enforcement are the only paid emergency resource a community has. More often they work in coordination with other local, state, and federal organizations to make communities safer.

On National Law Enforcement Day, we have an opportunity to thank them for their service and offer a token of respect.
