Not all pets are of the Beverly Hills Chihuahua variety. Tips for dressing up your pet:

  • If your pet just doesn’t like dressing up, let them sit this holiday out.
  • Be sure it fits. Restricting movement or ability to breathe can cause injury or illness.
  • Many pets like to chew. Avoid loose or dangling pieces which can cause choking hazards.

NATIONAL DRESS UP YOUR PET DAY HISTORY

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalDressUpYourPetDay

The name of the day tells you how to celebrate it; dress your pets up! Keep your pet’s comfort first and foremost. A visit to the groomer for a bit of polish and trim always improves our pet companion’s appearance. Get a snazzy bandana, bow, or collar to show off the fresh do. How about a sweater for chilly, long walks? If the tutu is too, too much, your pooch will let you know. Be sure to share your favorite pet poses with us. NATIONAL OATMEAL MONTH

In January, National Oatmeal Month declares it’s possible to create healthy changes with this grain. Celebrate all month long by incorporating oatmeal in your breakfast and snacks. We will show you how!

Oatmeal has earned a reputation for being heart healthy and soothing itchy skin. Beyond several other possible health benefits, steel cut oats add a nutty flavor and texture to your meal.  If you’re looking for a softer and quicker cook to your oats, rolled oats cook almost instantly!

  • Add steel cut oats, fresh fruit, and nuts to yogurt.
  • Whip up some instant oatmeal and add a tablespoon of peanut butter and dried fruit.
  • Mix together 1 cup steel cut oats, 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1/2 cup ground flax seed, 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips, 1/3 cup honey, and 1 tablespoon chia seeds. Roll into 1 inch balls and store in the refrigerator or freezer. They make excellent mid-day snacks and are packed with protein, low in sugar, and when you choose a natural peanut butter or powdered peanut butter, has no cholesterol.
  • Granola comes in a variety of combinations. Don’t hesitate to mix up your granola. Try a spicy blend or a tropical version.
  • Baked oatmeal offers a hot breakfast option that can be made ahead of time and reheated as needed. Customize it to fit your family’s needs.
  • Add oats to thicken your soups and a nutty flavor.
  • Makes a great alternative in Meat Loaf too.
  • Layer yogurt, fruit, and granola for a fun parfait.
  • Celebrate National Oatmeal Muffin Day on December 19!

Don’t forget National Oatmeal Day, Better Breakfast Day, Granola Bar, Oatmeal Cookie Day, and National Cereal Day.

MONKEY DAY

Every year on December 14th National Monkey Day celebrates unique characteristics of simians. The day also focuses on other non-human primates such as apes, tarsiers, and lemurs.

Monkeys, also referred to as simians, live all over the world. More than 260 species of monkeys populate Africa, Central America, South America and Asia. They range in size from mere ounces like the pygmy marmoset to the mandrill at a heavier 80 pounds and tend to walk on all four limbs. As a member of the primate family, they are considered a lesser ape. Most monkeys have a tail, though not all do. Monkeys are divided into two categories – Old World monkeys and New World monkeys.

These sometimes adorable creatures are indeed still wild animals. You should not attempt to get one as a pet as it is prohibited in many places. The exotic pet trades, circuses, and research industries are cruel to these animals. Their safety and health can be compromised in order to maximize profits. If you can and do adopt one please remember they are indeed wild animals.

Their personalities and habits capture the attention of humans on many levels. These intelligent animals with opposable thumbs live in family groups, too. However, many species of monkeys are endangered.

MONKEY DAY HISTORY

A Michigan State University art student, Casey Sorrow, created National Monkey Day when he wrote Monkey Day on his friend’s calendar. A celebration followed and grew.

Please be aware if you come across wild feral monkies there are reasons to leave them alone. They can bite, causing harm to both other animals and people. Those in Silver Springs State Park, some have tested positive for rabies and other diseases.

Feral rhesus macaques are wild troupes of the rhesus macaque released by researchers, zoos, or private owners, that have been able to survive and propagate in several places in the United States.

Silver Springs State Park Florida

A colony of rhesus macaques was established around Silver Springs in Florida around the spring of 1938. The monkeys were released by tour boat operator Colonel Tooey to enhance his Jungle Cruise ride. A traditional story that the monkeys were released for scenery enhancement in the Tarzan movies that were filmed at that location is false, as the only Tarzan movie filmed in the area, 1939’s Tarzan Finds a Son! contains no rhesus macaques, in part because of the species’ bad temperament. The monkeys continue to thrive along the Silver River to this day. wikipedia source

NATIONAL OATMEAL DAY

Hearts get healthy on National Oatmeal Day! Not only is oatmeal one of America’s favorite breakfast foods, but we also celebrate it annually on October 29th. It’s a perfect day to enjoy one of America’s favorite breakfast foods.

A warm bowl of oatmeal starts a day off right. Add spices, fruit, nuts, or nut butters to add flavor. It’s also a versatile ingredient. Add oatmeal to baked goods to create a delicious crumble. We use it to make granola, cookies, and bars. Sometimes, recipes for soups call for oatmeal, adding thicker texture and nutty flavor.

  • Steel-cut oats are coarsely cut oats. They’re the nuttiest and most flavorful oats available.
  • Oatmeal also comes in different forms. Rolled oats are a whole grain oat that’s rolled into oat flakes. They may take longer to cook, but the nutty flavor adds to the enjoyment.
  • Another kind is instant or quick oats. These oats cook more quickly because they’ve either been pre-cooked or cut thinner. They lose some of the nuttiness found in rolled oats, but they offer similar health benefits.

Oatmeal offers many health benefits.

  • A bowl of oatmeal daily can lower cholesterol.
  • It may reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • It may reduce your risk of cancer. (According to the American Cancer Society, eating a diet high in fiber may help reduce your risk for cancer.)
  • The grain is low in fat.
  • Oatmeal is low in calories.
  • Add oatmeal to your diet as a good source of iron and fiber.

Some favorite oatmeal toppings include brown sugar, sugar, cinnamon, peaches, blueberries, strawberries, bananas, nuts, and granola.

Oatmeal has a long tradition in the state of Vermont, which originated within the Scottish settlement.  Although there were many variations, most oatmeal recipes began with steel-cut oats. They soaked the oats overnight in cold water, salt, and maple syrup. Early the next morning, the cook would add ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon, and, occasionally, ground ginger.  The pot was then placed over heat and cooked for approximately 90 minutes. The oatmeal was served steaming hot with cream, milk, or butter.

Vermont leads the United States in per capita consumption of cooked oatmeal cereal.

The Quaker Man is one of the oldest advertising mascots in America. The Quaker Oats company registered him as the first trademark for a breakfast cereal in 1877.
