Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day on August 28th sets aside a day to remember the pet companions we’ve lost.

The death of a pet, whether furry, feathered, or an uncommon variety, is felt deeply. They become family and a familiar part of our lives. Mourning their death is different for everyone, and the observance provides a way to help heal the ache of loss.

The pain of loss is real. As each person travels through their grief, we remember the companionship and comfort they provided to us. Don’t forget that part of the relationship included care provided by you. The empty space left by the loss of a beloved pet is sometimes a difficult void to overcome.

Celebrate the home you provided and the joy your beloved pet brought you in return. When you are ready, you will know the time has arrived to find a new ‘critter’ to replace the emptiness felt. There are many animals yet to find a home. In time, you can be their new home.

In our case we turn our sights to helping other animals.  Wylie was one of our first rescues. We have branched out to help fulfill a need.  While we do bring those in need of the most care inside, we either find them loving forever homes or we are their fur-ever home. 

We have also created and care for community cats on our property.  On average we see between 10 and 30 feral daily.  We supply food, water, warm shelters in winter and try to make our porch a safe haven for these forgotten babies that never asked to be born.  We work with our county shelter for TNR services.  We educate our neighbors and encourage them to get involved as well.  As we live just beyond urban areas we get a lot of dumped pets.  Several of our regulars were someone’s pet.  We have an Amazon list that helps provide food to these in need cats.  So we pay it forward to each new cat we help. Deborah Barnes founded Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day in honor of her cat, Mr. Jazz. Cats are fascinating and lovable, little friends to have around the home. We miss them when they leave us. Truthfully, it’s the same with any pet.

National Dog Day on August 26th encourages dog ownership of all breeds. While seeking a new companion, be sure to consider the mutts, mixes, purebreds, and everything in between. 

Whether mixed or purebred, embrace the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe, and abuse-free life. They all give us companionship. Additionally, they keep us safe, and they aid those in need. Dogs play. Well, they play many roles in our lives, too! They keep us healthy, both physically and mentally.

While many days aim to find loving homes for dogs, this day expands that consideration to look beyond the breed. Look into the heart of the animal. The purpose of the National Dog Day Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year.

A dog is man’s best friend.

Breeds

Purebreds are animals whose parents were both of the same breed. While the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes official breeds, not all dogs with parents from the same breed are considered official by the AKC. One benefit of purebred animals is that characteristics such as behavior and size are predictable.

With mixed breed animals, the genetics becomes uncertain, and some of the predictability is lost. However, when it comes to choosing a dog to add to your family or for training one to join a team, both purebred and mixed breeds may still fit the bill. Both types of dogs, young and old, find their way to shelters.

Many popular breeds fill shelters due to recent films or television shows. Families buy an animal imagining they will make the perfect pet but are unprepared for the training, care, and other responsibilities that come with canine care. Regardless of their genetics, all dogs require care and training. If there’s a particular breed that has captured your heart, check the shelters. You might be surprised to find either a purebred or one that is a mix of the kind you’re fond of.

Meet Rosie. She is spoiled rotten and happily shares our home with 5 cats and us humans too.

When dogs find a forever home, their companionship creates lifelong benefits. They bring with them joy, loyalty, and devotion. Eventually, no matter the breed, these pets become family.

When considering adoption, adopt, don’t shop. If you have your heart set on a purebred companion, consider visiting a website like bestfriends.org or petfinder.com to find one at a shelter. Learn how organizations like these are changing the way we adopt. As you search for your new family member, get prepared. Keep in mind the needs of a small versus large dog. Until you find your forever companion, consider volunteering at your shelter or becoming a foster parent.

Use #NationalDogDay and post photos of your dog on social media. Take your dog for a walk.  If you do not have a dog, ask to take your neighbor’s dog for a stroll, or volunteer at a shelter.

The celebration encourages both the spirit of generosity and sharing the joys of life with delight. Go out into the world with your family pet and plant the bean of love everywhere you go. Share it generously, like dogs do when they take care of us when we are sick or down. They give us all their love with abandon in the forms of licks and snuggles. Sometimes our furry friends do tricks and antics only canines know how to do. Other times, they even perform their own love song or woo woo. WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

Each year, World Humanitarian Day is held on August 19 to honor aid workers who put their lives at risk to better the lives of others. The day also rallies support for people around the world affected by crises. 

Around the world, the United Nations, along with International organizations and Non-governmental organizations, come together to observe World Humanitarian Day. The day is commemorated with fundraisers for relief organizations, lectures, and a variety of events to increase awareness for those living in crisis.

Since the inception of the day, each year focuses on a particular theme. For instance, in 2010 the emphasis concentrated on the work and achievements of humanitarian workers in the field. To learn about the theme for each year, visit un.org.

Humanitarians are credited for providing life-saving assistance to millions of people in need around the world. Oftentimes, they give aid in the middle of a war, conflict, famine, and natural disasters. While trying to help those in need, over 700 humanitarian workers have lost their lives or experienced dangerous situations.

Despite the difficult job, humanitarians serve selflessly to meet the basic needs of some of the most helpless people in the world. These needs include food, clothing, shelter, and a safe place to stay. An estimated 130 million people throughout the world live in crisis and are in need of humanitarian aid. As natural disasters, economic crises, and conflicts increase, so will the need for humanitarian workers.

Some of the most famous humanitarians include Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Princess Diana, Martin Luther King, Jr., Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie, and Desmond Tutu. Some of these famous humanitarians help those living in crisis situations by the wealth they have amassed. For others, being a humanitarian has cost them their lives.

You don’t have to be a celebrity, have lots of money, or travel to a third-world country to be a humanitarian. All you need to do is have the desire to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate.

WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY HISTORY

The General Assembly of the United Nations established World Humanitarian Day in 2008. It was first observed on August 19, 2009. The observance occurred exactly six years after the 2002 Canal Hotel Bombing in Baghdad, where 22 people died. Among those killed was the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights.

  1. Volunteer at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen.
  2. Donate some of your personal belongings to someone in need.
  3. Make a contribution to a relief organization.
  4. Do a random act of kindness for a complete stranger.

BLACK CAT APPRECIATION DAY

Black Cat Appreciation Day on August 17th aims to dispel all myths surrounding black cats. Additionally, the day shouldn’t be confused with National Black Cat Day.

Superstitions aside, cats are simply adorable, even black ones. These feline creatures in their sleek, black coats may carry an air of mystery. However, most cats do. Along with that, their ability to find mischief or to avoid you equals that of tabbys, cinnamons, gingers, calicos, whites or grays.

However, one black cat fact that holds true is they are less likely to be adopted. Just like black dogs, this variety of cat gets shunned at shelters. Despite this, black cats still respond to love and attention no differently than other felines.

So, let a black cat cross your path. They aren’t witches. More than likely, adopting a black cat will help keep the mouse population down around the place. Expect the number of cuddles in your life to increase, too!

Charlie was abandoned by his previous owners. After a diligent search for his owners, we adopted him. He was already so socialized and sweet, we could not even consider consigning him to a shelter. We already had 3 cats but there was no way this personality would do well in a shelter.

He started out as my kitty, due to some health issues and a natural preference he now adores my husband. They talk, and Charlie will talk and lead you to his treats.

Sadly Charlie crossed the rainbow bridge 3 years ago. We have several Ferals that we care for including an Alfie, Righty, Kitten and Blackie. The latest ones that have become part of our feral group are Domino and Stripes.
