EAT YOUR JELL-O DAY

July 12 easily directs us what to do on Eat Your Jello Day! With plenty of flavors to choose from, you should have no problem finding one you like.

Trademarked in 1897 by Pearle Wait of Leroy, New York, Jell-O is the novel and fun dessert loved by millions. Francis Woodward, who later purchased the recipe and trademark, eventually made Jell-O a household name. With 21 different flavors, Jell-O satisfies every taste and can be enjoyed in numerous combinations.

Jell-O’s primary ingredient is gelatin. Gelatin consists of collagen, specifically animal collagen. It’s a protein extracted from the connective tissues of cows and pigs. Once the protein is broken down and extracted, the collagen is dried and ground into a fine powder.

Jell-O has been the subject of many classroom art and science projects throughout the years. From the study of viscosity and laser beams to gelatin artwork, Jell-O inspires in and outside the kitchen.

Eat Your Jell-O Day specifically tells us to eat. So, whether it is molded, layered, or mixed with fruit, vegetables, or marshmallows, be sure to have some. It’s delicious as a salad, dessert, or even a shot. Jell-O doesn’t break the budget either, nor does it add too many calories. Where can you go wrong?

NATIONAL MOJITO DAY

Each year on July 11th, people across America raise a glass to mark National Mojito Day. The cocktail consists of white rum, sugar, lime juice, sparkling water, and mint.

The Mojito is a traditional Cuban highball, and while rumored to be a drink favored by the author, Ernest Hemingway, it’s never been proven. It seems the story behind Hemingway and the Mojito is a tall tale to attract visitors and to sell drinks. Isn’t every origin story behind a drink designed to sell more of the original anyway?

Whether Hemingway ever had a mojito or even liked it, doesn’t matter. With a low alcohol content, this refreshing cocktail gains popularity in the summertime for its refreshing combination of sweetness, citrus, and mint flavors. The exhilarating flavor says summer and stimulates the palate, too. The Mojito serves up a perfect pairing with barbecues and evenings at the beach.

Lime wedges and mint leaves garnish an ice filled glass of Mojito.

I decided to explore more after the drink was featured in a movie.  In the Bond film Die Another Day.  So I decided to introduce my family and friends after trying them myself.  I even found a great recipe to make it a punch for a party.

Although born in Cuba, the exact origin of the Mojito remains under debate with roots as early as 1586.

A variety of recipes add fruit to the Mojito for unique summer combinations. The already refreshing beverage lends itself to being mixed in large pitchers for serving a crowd or individual drinks for one or two people. Mixes also offer the simplicity of just adding rum. However, fresh, simple ingredients bring out the best flavor of a Mojito.

NATIONAL BLUEBERRY MUFFIN DAY

National Blueberry Muffin Day on July 11th gives us a great reason to get up in the morning and celebrate! Americans love their blueberry muffins so much, it’s their number 1 favorite muffin flavor. Whether it is for breakfast or a snack, blueberry muffins are melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

While enjoying a delicious blueberry muffin, consider the powerhouse the blueberry is. This once wild berry became domesticated during the early 1900s thanks to the observations of Elizabeth Coleman White and the research of Dr. Frederick V. Coville. Before their efforts, wild blueberries were never successfully transplanted and raised in any farming operation for personal or commercial production. The only way to enjoy fresh blueberries was to seek them out where they grew naturally.

Today we can enjoy the abundant potassium, vitamin C and B6, and other health benefits of the blueberry much more readily than they did 120 years ago. We bake them into muffins and eat them by the handfuls. They are so likable that we celebrate blueberries as a popsicle, cheesecake, pie, and a popover day, too! Don’t forget, July is also National Blueberry Month.

While celebrating the day, be sure to make a few for co-workers and family, too. It’s not a celebration if you don’t share. It is America’s favorite muffin after all.

Give making your own a try! If you don’t bake, be sure to stop by your favorite bakery and pick up a few. Give them a shout out, too.

NATIONAL PINA COLADA DAY

July 10th recognizes a sweet, rum-based cocktail on National Pina Colada Day. Along with rum, a Pina Colada includes cream of coconut and pineapple juice and is usually served blended or shaken with ice.

Pina Colada means ‘strained pineapple,’ a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice used in the drink.

While pineapple has been a part of the distillation history of rum, coconut didn’t show up until later. The first written reference to a pina colada was in 1922. However, two different claims to the invention of the pina colada in 1952 come from San Juan. Neither wavers from their story.

No matter who created the first creamy, sweet rum drink, it is forever infused with the ocean and beaches. The cocktail’s bright flavor suggests sunshine and vacation. Coconut alone makes us think of suntans while the pineapple’s freshness delivers a sparkling note of summer breezes.

The beverage isn’t the only way to celebrate either. The day is dedicated to all things pina colada. Whether we make a dessert or snack on pina colada jelly beans, everyone can join in the day.

Put on your sunglasses, kick back, and enjoy a sip or a taste. It’s the best way to celebrate.

NATIONAL SUGAR COOKIE DAY

Observed each year on July 9th, National Sugar Cookie Day honors the ever-popular and delicious sugar cookie.

A holiday favorite and very easy to make, sugar cookies disappear quickly once they come out of the oven. Most sugar cookies include sugar, flour, butter, eggs, vanilla, and either baking powder or baking soda. While most people have the ingredients on hand at all times, some of the ingredients should be fresh for the best outcome. Children enjoy baking and decorating anytime someone makes a batch of sugar cookies.

The sugar cookie is believed to have originated in the mid-1700s in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. German Protestant settlers created a round, crumbly and buttery cookie that came to be known as the Nazareth Cookie.

Today, sugar cookie making and decorating has become an art form for kids and adults alike. Starting with the shape of the cookie, the dough is formed with either a cookie cutter or other methods of cutting and shaping the dough. Once the cookie is baked, the cookie artist adds colored frosting or icing. Sprinkles, edible glitter, colored sugars, and additional details may be added. Some cookies receive so much detail, it’s almost a shame to eat them.
