WORLD NUTELLA DAY

World Nutella Day celebrates what happens when hazelnuts and chocolate collide. For example, millions of people celebrating all on February 5th each year!

It is often said that necessity is the mother of invention. Adding hazelnuts when cocoa is hard to come by may have been an Italian trick during hard times. In the 1800s, in the northern Italian city of Piedmont, they made a paste of chocolate and hazelnuts at a time when the nuts were abundant, but the cocoa was not.

At the end of World War II, cocoa was once again difficult to come by. Pastry Maker, Pietro Ferrero, made loaves of this sweet paste and called it Giandujot. Soon after, the Ferrero Company was founded on May 14, 1946.

It wasn’t until 1951 that Ferrero made the paste into a spreadable form. We wouldn’t even recognize the spread by name until 1964 when Ferrero’s son Michele gave the jar of creamy hazelnut and cocoa the name Nutella.

HOMEMADE SOUP DAY

February 4th heats up with National Homemade Soup Day. In every cuisine, soup provides a rich basis of flavor and history.

Before the era of modern transportation, soup was a product of regionally available foods. For this reason, there are thousands of soup recipes available today.

Many soups also offer medicinal properties. What was once considered a wive’s tale, chicken soup now has the backing of the scientific community. Yes, chicken soup helps relieve the symptoms of the common cold. How? Well, scientists believe that a bowl of the soup may reduce inflammation of the lungs. It is thought that chicken soup slows down the activity of white blood cells that can cause inflammation.

But that’s not all homemade soup does. Every cook knows the most important ingredient that goes into every pot of simmering soup. They keep the ingredient stored where it will do its best work, too. As they work, they season the soup from their heart giving it just the right amount of love each and every time. Whether they add it with the noodles or the vegetable, the broth or the cream, each cook knows there’s enough to go around. That’s why homemade soup heals the best.

NATIONAL TATER TOT DAY

On February 2nd, National Tater Tot Day recognizes a kitchen staple. In the United States, we consume approximately 3.5 billion of these nuggets of potato goodness per year.

These bite-sized bits of golden deliciousness created from the scraps from making French fries once were used to feed cattle. But how do the cast-offs from making French fries become the bite-sized, kitchen-friendly morsels we love to devour today? Through persistence and ingenuity, of course!

Two brothers, Nephi and Golden Grigg, along with their brother-in-law started dabbling in frozen food when they rented a plant on the Oregon and Idaho borders in 1934. The focused on making French fries, but the waste fed to cattle seemed excessive. Was there a way to reduce the excess? Maybe, but instead they chose to create a product from the excess. Not only did the scrapped and shredded bits form into tasty bites when blanched and fried, but they also fit into their product line, too. They froze well, could be baked and were delicious! By 1952, they purchased the plant, forming the Oregon Frozen Foods Company that would later become Ore-Ida.

Seasoned with spices or baked into a casserole, tater tots make a meal, side dish, or a snack celebration. We dip them, pop them, or just savor them.

AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER MONTH

February, the month for romance and Valentines, is also An Affair to Remember Month, remembering the classic 1957 romantic tearjerker starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.

An Affair to Remember opened in theaters in the summer of 1957. The saga of the two lovers, both already engaged to another and how they find, lose and then rediscover one another has been called one of the most beautiful romances ever filmed, by the American Film Institute.

Cary Grant would later admit, like many of the film’s fans, he would break into tears watching it.

Fun Fact: An Affair to Remember is actually a remake. Director Leo McCarey’s 1957 version is a scene-by-scene remake of the film Love Affair which he made in 1939. Critics generally agree the film is not an improvement on the original but a fin production in its own right.

The theme song is performed by Vic Damone over the opening credits and later in the film by Marni Nixon (as lip-synced by Deborah Kerr).

Failure drove McCarey to attempt a remake of Affair. His previous film, a Cold War melodrama called My Son John, had been a flop. The director needed a hit, so he turned to Love Affair for revamping into An Affair to Remember.

The film Sleepless in Seattle was patterned mainly after An Affair to Remember. In Sleepless, several scenes evoke the earlier movie on many occasions. There was even a pivotal moment involving the Empire State Building observation deck, much like there was in An Affair to Remember.

A 1994 remake (which used the original title Love Affair) starred Warren Beatty and featured Katherine Hepburn in her final screen appearance.

Like his character in the movie, Cary Grant met and fell in love with his wife, Actress Betsy Drak aboard the Queen Mary.

During the filming, Robert Wagner, then a young aspiring actor, came by to watch Cary Grant work. One day Grant told the young Wagner how excited he was that he had finally mastered breath control while performing. This impressed the young Wagner who said, “It was his sixty-second picture, and he was still honing his craft.”

An Affair to Remember Month was first observed in 1996 when it was published in Chases Calendar of events.
