National Dairy Month

National Dairy Month in June celebrates the many contributions of the dairy industry to our health and economy.

Dairy products contribute to our health in numerous ways. An 8-ounce glass of milk has more nutrients than the same serving size of juice. It’s packed with protein, too. And cheese is udderly delicious!

Here’s a list of popular dairy products you might find during Dairy Month:

  1. Milk (whole, skim, 2%, lactose-free, flavored)
  2. Cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, provolone, feta, blue cheese)
  3. Yogurt (plain, flavored, Greek yogurt, yogurt drinks)
  4. Butter (salted, unsalted, clarified butter)
  5. Ice cream (various flavors and varieties)
  6. Cream (heavy cream, whipping cream, sour cream)
  7. Cottage cheese
  8. Cream cheese
  9. Ricotta cheese
  10. Mascarpone cheese
  11. Buttermilk
  12. Condensed milk
  13. Evaporated milk
  14. Flavored milkshakes
  15. Sherbet
  16. Sour cream
  17. Whipped cream
  18. Yogurt-based desserts (parfaits, yogurt bowls, smoothies)
  19. Dairy-based spreads (cheese spreads, cream cheese spreads)
  20. Dairy-based dips (ranch dip, spinach dip, queso dip)

These are just a few examples of the dairy products you might come across during Dairy Month. Keep in mind that availability may vary depending on your location and personal preferences.

Beyond the benefits that go into our bodies, the dairy industry fuels our economy. From the farmer and cheese production to distribution and the grocers who stock their shelves with products there’s a non-stop demand for all the delicious ways we enjoy dairy products.

HISTORY

National Dairy Month began in 1937 to promote dairy products. The Dairy Council sponsors the month.

Both wild and domesticated roses grow in the United States. Five states even make the rose their state flower. While New York’s official rose is one of any color or combination, North Dakota and Iowa named the Prairie Rose as their state flower. Georgia’s state flower is the Cherokee Rose. The Oklahoma Rose is the state flower of its namesake.

First Lady Ellen Wilson started the White House Rose Garden in 1913. Before becoming a garden, part of the property where the Rose Garden grows was allocated to the White House stables, horses and coaches. Don’t let the name fool you, though. There are more than just roses in the White House Rose Garden.

NATIONAL PTSD AWARENESS MONTH

National PTSD Awareness Month is observed annually in June. The month is dedicated to raising awareness about the condition and how to access treatment. June 27th is also National PTSD Awareness Day.

According to the National Center for PTSD, between 7 and 8 percent of the population will experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during their lifetime.

Men, women, and children can experience PTSD as a result of trauma in their lives. Events due to combat, accidents, disasters, and abuse are just a few of the causes of PSTD. No matter the reason, PTSD is treatable, but not everyone seeks treatment. There are resources available to help diagnosis PTSD and get help. There is no shame in seeking assistance.

HISTORY

National PTSD Awareness Month is a campaign supported by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.

HOW TO OBSERVE

If you or someone you know might be experiencing PTSD, visit these resources below, or seek professional care from a therapist who has experience treating PTSD.

NATIONAL HOMEOWNERSHIP MONTH

National Homeownership Month in June shines a spotlight on supporting the American Dream of homeownership. It’s also a time to recognize the organizations that help individuals and families to achieve their goals.

From the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Federal Housing Administration to the realtors, financial and housing counselors, and assistance programs, they all play a part in helping first-time homebuyers make their dream come true.

After an extreme low in 2016, homeownership has been making a gradual recovery. Ownership trends are changing, though. With priorities changing, so do the types of homes people are seeking.

NATIONAL HOMEOWNERSHIP MONTH HISTORY

In 1995, National Homeownership Week began as a strategy of President William Clinton’s administration to increase homeownership across the nation. In 2002, President George W. Bush expanded the observance to the entire month of June.

NATIONAL SOUL FOOD MONTH

National Soul Food Month in June is steeped in tradition, tracing its heritage back generations.

While soul food and southern cooking may often be compared, African-American slaves developed soul food’s distinct character by creating outstanding meals from less-than-desirable cuts of meat and produce.
Whether the meal consisted of fried meats and vegetables or bbq and baked goods, the meals served to nourish the body and the fellowship that accompanied it nourished the soul.

According to culinaryhistorians.org, the term “soul food” made its appearance and became popular in the 1960s, giving a name to the flavorful foods, often fried in pork fat, that were becoming known in kitchens and restaurants in cities across the country.

However, soul food doesn’t have to laden with fat. Fresh from the southern garden, it can be just as flavorful as it can be light. Many of the old recipes are new again with spices and herbs and pinches of the old traditions.

HISTORY

Charla Draper founded National Soul Food Month in 2001 to celebrate the rich history of soul food.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Take a tour through soul food heritage. Graze the flavors and spices of the heritage. Have a conversation while you’re at it and feed your soul.  Listen to the history of the food, where it’s traveled, how it’s changed through the years.  Use #NationalSoulFoodMonth to share your favorites on social media.  Visit culinaryhistorians.org to learn more.
