NATIONAL JEWEL DAY

National Jewel Day is observed March 13th of every year. While this day may be a day to give or receive jewelry, it could also be a day to recognize jewelers.   It may also be a day to wear those gems you may already have!

Jewelry is like finding the perfect dress. You know the one I’m talking about. It can be new or an older favorite. When you see yourself in the mirror it enlivens your spirit, gives your confidence a boost, and no matter what you have a day better than others.

Favorite jewelry is the same be it a lucky pair of earrings, your special necklace or a ring that reminds of happy times. These are often a tangible link to a memory you hold dear. This is why we both buy and receive jewelry.

I was born in October which makes my birthstone an Opal. Now I’m extremely fair-skinned with red hair. I feel better when I wear Blue Topaz that enhances my blue eyes. Indeed I often get more compliments on my blue eyes when I wear it.

My wedding ring reminds me of all the happiness my husband and I have shared. Sure it hasn’t always been rosy, but I wouldn’t choose anything different. We just celebrated 20 years together knowing that we are even stronger today than when we started. I kept my original, but I got an upgrade on our Anniversary! See below.

Anniversary upgrade

So find your favorites. Whether you receive it as a gift or buy it yourself, these are the nudges to our memories. Best of all they can be shared and passed on to the next generation. Hopefully, some of the memories and stories go with them. Before you know it you have heirlooms worth so much more than mere money.

One last tip I learned as a jeweler. A good piece of jewelry can last as long as the memories tied to them. The real thing with proper care can be passed on for better than hundreds of years. Make sure you consult a professional for cleanings, repair, and periodic checks. Some of the things I’ve heard used to clean for instance would make you cringe. I’ve also seen both gems and setting ruined from these practices.

NATIONAL BARBIE DAY

On March 9th, National Barbie Day celebrates an iconic toy that premiered on this day in 1959. Barbie debuted at the American International Toy Fair in New York.

March 9th, 1959 also celebrates Barbie’s official birthday.

In 1959, Ruth Handler created the Barbie doll and launched an American icon. Barbie’s full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts, and she came with a full array of accessories. While toymakers mass-produced toys for years, before Barbie, none of them had adult features. Barbie’s adult features made the toy a first of its kind. Interestingly, Barbie’s marketing strategy relied on television advertising. For example, Barbie was the sole sponsor of the Mickey Mouse Club, marketing directly to children. At the time, the approach was unique. Estimates place over a billion Barbie dolls have been sold worldwide in over 150 countries.

Detractors often criticize Barbie for being an unattainable ideal of a woman. While her figure alone is unrealistic, over the years, Barbie evolved both in style and shape. In 2019, the Barbie brand honored pioneering women across several eras, as well. The modern Barbie offers positive role models in business, science, education, and more. Barbie continues to change, year after year, keeping up with the styles and the headlines.

In 1961, Mattel introduce Ken Carson as Barbie’s boyfriend.

Barbie has several sisters. However, Barbie’s family dynamic keeps changing. These are the sisters that Mattel has released in various forms:

  • Kelly
  • Chelsea
  • Skipper
  • Stacie
  • Krissy

In 1998, the Toy Hall of Fame inducted Barbie into its hallowed halls. The toy joined hundreds of other famous toys, some of which National Day Calendar celebrates throughout the year. Some of those include the Duncan yoyo, chess, and Radio Flyer wagon.

NATIONAL SONS DAY

Every year on March 4th, National Sons Day honors the sons of the world and those who raise them. The day also takes a look at a son’s role and his relationship with those around him.

Around the world, slightly more sons are born than daughters. Both bring joy to families, though. Our rambunctious sons grow into adult men and forge their own independence in the world. Some are soft-spoken and gentle. Others with a spark of curiosity fill every hour with questions, some unanswerable.

Parents and family members strive to mold them into a person better than we are. Sons, like many children, test the boundaries until one day, they stand before us, grown. National Sons Day encourages parents to be role models and provide the boundaries sons need. Celebrate their successes while guiding them through their failures. Give them a foundation of skills that they will rely on for a lifetime and pass on to their sons.

Each day as a son and the parent of one is a treasure. Boys need us to model responsibility, hard work, and integrity. As they work and learn beside us, those qualities will be instilled in them. The day reminds us of the value our sons bring to our lives and others.

NATIONAL SONS DAY HISTORY

In 2018, Jill Nico created National Sons Day celebrating the importance and significance of sons and those who raise them. While there’s no single reason for selecting March 4th, the founder explains spring seemed ideal, and the date resounds with momentum when spoken. Additionally, many sons enjoy spring sports, and it’s an excellent time to spend time outdoors. Visit the Facebook page to join in the celebration.

In the late 1990s, an effort to create National Sons Day began as a counterpart to National Take Your Daughters to Work Day. By 1998, the group called National Sons Day created National Take Your Sons to Work Day. In later years, the separate observances joined forces.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL SONS DAY

Consider all the things you want your son to know and be when he’s an adult.

Take the day to teach your son something you think is important for him to know. Change a tire or balance the checkbook. The small tasks, the mundane ones are the ones that get in the way when we don’t know how to do them. Bond over the experience by letting him know you teach him these skills to clear a path for the bigger events in his life.

Join an organization for mentoring boys without male role models.  Find a role model that fits the interests of your son.  Teach your son something your father taught you.  Offer to give a skills class at a school.  Make the day unique by taking a photograph with all the sons together and share on social media using #NationalSonsDay.

WORLD MUSIC THERAPY DAY

Every year on March 1st, World Music Therapy Day shines a light on music therapists worldwide. The day also showcases how music provides a way to make life better and more fulfilling.

Many people refer to music as a universal language. Music therapy is rooted in the healing effect it has on human beings. Music therapy has proven to be an effective way to address physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs of children, seniors, and people with disabilities. People with cerebral palsy, autism, learning disabilities, and many other types of disabilities see benefits of receiving music therapy.

Music therapy often includes singing, listening to music, creating music, moving to music, and using instruments.

Research proves that music therapy is effective for:

  • Promoting movement
  • Providing ways to communicate
  • Providing ways to express feelings

Music therapists provide this type of therapy. Music therapists need a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from an accredited school in the United States. They must also have 1,200 hours of clinical training. According to the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), there are 8,000 music therapists in the United States. Other countries also have music therapy associations around the world, including Argentina, England, France, Austria, Canada, Switzerland, India, Japan, and Spain.

Since music is portable, music therapists provide their services in a variety of environments. They go to schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and even a client’s home. The success of music therapy allows some schools to implement music therapy in their special education programs. Music helps children in special education develop rhythm and motor skills as well as increase memorization skills. It also promotes children to behave appropriately and offers a distraction from discomfort and anxiety.

Scott Langholff is a professional musician with 40 years of teaching seniors to play and providing Musical entertainment to senior groups, dances and care facilities.  In the Pensacola, Florida area, the music is hand picked for the ages and crowds present.  It results in high engagement levels whether singing the lyrics, dancing or the smiles from the memories evoked, it’s a good time for all!

WORLD MUSIC THERAPY DAY HISTORY

The World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) launched World Music Therapy Day in 2016. WFMT was founded in 1985 during the 5th World Congress of Music Therapy in Italy.

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MINT DAY

Recognized by the US National Confectioners Association, National Chocolate Mint Day is observed annually across the nation on February 19th. This holiday has been set aside for all the chocolate mint lovers to eat their favorite treats all day long.

The Aztecs and Mayans are given much credit for their ways with chocolate. And while chocolate was brought back to Europeans, they were not fond of the dark, bitter bean, so they used more for medicinal purposes.

As it was mostly consumed as a hot beverage, Europeans mixed mint, cinnamon and other spices to make it more palatable. Over time, they added sugar, and the combination of chocolate and mint became fashionable.

Fast forward to the mid-1800s when inventions and improvements in processes made it possible for confectioners to begin mass-producing chocolates. Even then, small candy shops served a local public. Advertisements for mint chocolates, or chocolate mints, did not start showing up in newspapers until the turn of the century.

The International Dairy Foods Association states that mint chocolate chip is the 10th most popular flavor of ice cream.

One of the earliest mass-producers of chocolate mints was Huyler’s in New York. Their chain of stores spread across the country.

We find mint chocolate in everything from ice cream to brownies, cookies and candies, liquors and sauces. Girl Scouts first sold Thin Mint cookies in 1953 and are still their most popular cookie. Mint chocolate is also the name of an herb with edible leaves that tastes like chocolate and mint.
