VEGETARIAN MONTH

Vegetarian Month is an annual designation observed in October. Even if you’re a meat eater, now’s the time to give some vegetarian recipes a try! As you probably know, vegetarianism is hugely popular among the millennial crowd. However, you may NOT know that it’s been around since before recorded history. Crazy, right? It’s one of the oldest diets in the book.

HEALTH BENEFITS

  1. A vegetarian diet is rich in antioxidants and vitamins. Lifestyles that are high in fruits, veggies, and other plant-based foods provide some of the most essential nutrients we need.
  2. Eating less meat supports heart health because it helps lower inflammation, and is high in dietary fiber. Plant-based foods can also significantly lower body mass index, which also promotes a healthy heart.
  3. Vegetarian diets can also help with weight loss if you keep processed carbs out along with the meat. If most of what you eat is fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds, it can actually be quite easy to lose weight.
  4. Cutting out meat may help to reduce your risk of diabetes, according to Loma Linda University School of Public Health.
  5. Finally, contrary to popular belief, you can still get plenty of protein on a vegetarian diet. If you do it right, it easily satisfies all of your nutritional needs.

HISTORY

Celebrating this for an entire month stemmed from World Vegetarian Day, which was established by the North American Vegetarian Society on October 1st, 1977. But, vegetarianism itself dates back to a time before recorded history.

If you happen to fall in love with eating vegetarian this month, don’t worry… you can take it a step further for your next challenge. November 1st kicks off vegan month. Good luck!

HOW TO OBSERVE

Make a point to eat less meat this month. Don’t knock it ’til you try it! Make the yummiest (and prettiest) vegetarian meal you can find, and use #VegetarianMonth to post it on social media. If you don’t think you can go an entire month without it, that’s okay. Start out by trying Meatless Mondays. Do some online digging to find a few plant-based meals that you think sound tasty, and try cooking some of them up! And if you want some added incentives, here are a few things to remember. Meat is expensive; experts say vegetarians live longer, and… ice cream AND cheese pizza are vegetarian.

NATIONAL PASTA MONTH

October encourages us to partake in National Pasta Month, which may be one of many reasons we think this month is one of the most exciting ones to celebrate. I mean, come on. If you say you don’t like pasta, we’re pretty sure you’re lying. There’s a kind of pasta out there for everyone.

Anything from macaroni and cheese, to classic spaghetti and meatballs, to scrumptious shrimp scampi, or lasagna, pasta is one of those foods that it’s hard to go wrong with. If you’re allergic to wheat, you can still enjoy gluten-free pasta. It’s at just about every grocery store these days. This month, set your diet aside and indulge in some hearty Italian comfort food.

HOW TO OBSERVE

October is the perfect time to treat yourself to different delicious pasta recipes. In fact, it’s also Italian-American Heritage Month, so you can kill two birds with one stone if you get serious about noodles for supper this month. Here are some reasons pasta is incomparable to most meals.

  1. Any kind of meat and/or vegetables go perfectly with pasta of any kind.
  2. Pasta has endless possibilities because there are so many different kinds. Linguine, rigatoni, lasagna, ziti… The list goes on and on. What are you in the mood for today?
  3. It can be healthy, especially if you choose whole grain pasta. There’s a reason runners eat pasta before big races – it gives you a ton of energy!
  4. It’s so easy to make! Boil some water and throw in the pasta of your choice until it’s cooked right to where you want it.
  5. Since there are so many different flavors and textures, pasta offers ample opportunity to experiment in the kitchen; you and your taste buds will never be bored!

Try out these pasta days too!

Make some pasta, take pictures of how beautiful it looks (tip: paired with a glass of red wine, it’s even better) and use #NationalPastaMonth to post on social media.

Today there are also some great alternatives to traditional pasta in your favorite recipes. Try some of the great low carbohydrate options. Everything from Zoodles to shitake, and even whole wheat, chances are you can have a pasta recipe and stick to your low carb or Keto diets.

NATIONAL WOMEN’S SMALL BUSINESS MONTH

In October, National Women’s Small Business Month highlights the benefits and industry women bring to communities when they own a small business. With over 11 million (and growing!) women owning small businesses in the United States, there’s plenty of opportunities to get involved.

Throughout the month, organizations, businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs share resources and advice that support women-owned businesses. Like any small business, the benefits to a community are enormous. Locally owned small businesses bring revenue to communities. Small companies are more likely to support local organizations, schools and projects. They also provide a tremendous number of jobs, keeping local economies going and growing.

When you include women in the small business factor, you increase business diversity. Did you know that 50 percent of women small business owners are women of color? Supporting women in small businesses also inspires young women in powerful ways. When they see other women succeeding, they’re motivated to succeed, too! In 2012, 44 percent of women small business owners also had children under the age of 18 in their household. That means, by supporting women-owned businesses, you’re also supporting families.

Businesses owned by women come in all varieties, too. They pursue business in STEM fields, creative and consumer domains, and service-oriented professions. There’s really no limit to the opportunities available.

NATIONAL WOMEN’S SMALL BUSINESS MONTH HISTORY

Since 2012, the Small Business Administration has be been supporting National Women’s Small Business Month by promoting events, webinars and giving a voice to women business owners. Each year, the organization hosts a variety of events recognizing women in small businesses.

SUPPORT #WOMENSSMALLBUSINESSMONTH

Whether you own a small business or are considering starting one, there are several ways to participate all month long.

  1. Attend or host an event.
Whether it’s a seminar, webinar, interview or workshop, these events promote healthy small businesses. They provide a wealth of information all business owners need to know. These events also offer resources specific to women-owned enterprises.
  2. Be a mentor to other women.
If you’ve already overcome the stumbling blocks of ownership, you’re one of the most valuable resources available to beginning business owners. Your experiences not only help pave the way for others, but your insight brings clarity and confidence to others.
  3. Sharpen your skills.
Any business person knows that it’s vital to keep learning and discovering. Whether it’s a new technology, legislation, or financial news, the business world is always changing. It demands we stay focused and aware of the changing business world. Improving our skills also provides us with more opportunities. Whether driving business into new areas or changing direction, growing our tools help us create a brighter future for our businesses.
  4. Join an organization.
Numerous organizations around the country support small businesses. By networking with other like-minded women, you’re not only able to learn about growing your business but you can also share your experiences and be a voice for others. Some organizations you may find helpful include the National Association of Women Business Owners, your local Chamber of Commerce, and the American Business Women’s Association. If local organizations are lacking in your area, help start one. Bring a chapter to your community and let the leadership begin!
  5. Discover other resources.
For example, the U.S. Small Business Administration includes an Office of Women’s Business Ownership that serves not only as a guide, but advocates for women business owners, too.
  6. Support a Woman-Owned Small Business.
Explore your community and shop at women-owned small businesses.

One of the most significant ways you can celebrate is by share information on social media, including this article. Use #WomensSmallBusinessMonth to post on social media.

Rhizomes and Persimmons Month

Welcome to October, a month of transition and transformation in the world of nature. As the leaves turn brilliant shades of red and gold, and the air becomes crisper, it’s time to celebrate the unique charm of this beautiful month. In this blog post, we’ll explore the symbolism of rhizomes and the delightful persimmons that make October truly special.

Rhizomes: The Hidden Network Beneath

Rhizomes are fascinating underground structures found in the plant kingdom. They are horizontal stems that grow beneath the soil’s surface, giving rise to new shoots and roots. While rhizomes might not be as visible as the colorful leaves of autumn, they play a crucial role in the regeneration and resilience of many plant species.

October is a time when rhizomes quietly prepare for the next growing season. Plants like iris, ginger, and bamboo store energy and nutrients within these underground networks, ready to burst forth with new life when spring arrives. This hidden interconnectedness reminds us of the resilience and strength that lies beneath the surface, waiting to emerge when the time is right.

Persimmons: Nature’s Sweet Treat

One of the culinary delights of October is the persimmon, a fruit that embodies the essence of autumn. With its vibrant orange color and sweet, honey-like flavor, persimmons are a true seasonal delicacy. These fruits are not only delicious but also rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, making them a healthy addition to your autumn diet.

Whether enjoyed fresh, dried, or incorporated into various recipes, persimmons add a burst of autumnal flavor to your meals. From persimmon pies to salads and jams, there’s no shortage of creative ways to savor this autumn gem.

Embracing October’s Beauty

October invites us to slow down and savor the beauty of nature’s transformation. It’s a month when we can learn from rhizomes, appreciating the strength and resilience that can be found beneath the surface of our lives. It’s also a time to indulge in the sweet pleasures of persimmons, savoring the flavors of the season.

As you enjoy the crisp air, the rustling leaves, and the golden hues of October, take a moment to reflect on the rhizomes and persimmons in your life. What hidden strengths and sweet moments are waiting to be discovered? Embrace the magic of this month, for it’s a time of nature’s wonder and a celebration of life’s deliciousness.

In Conclusion

October is a month of hidden beauty and delightful flavors. Whether you’re admiring the resilience of rhizomes or savoring the sweetness of persimmons, this month offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and embrace the joys of the season. So, go ahead, take a walk among the falling leaves, enjoy a slice of persimmon pie, and revel in the beauty of October.
